Test the stream as private or unlisted before making it public: connect your encoder in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, check its preview, run the stream with realistic audio and movement, verify playback on a phone and computer, and monitor stream health. End the test on YouTube before stopping the encoder, then review the test archive and deliberately set the real broadcast’s visibility.
Before you test: confirm channel access and choose who can view
Check that your channel is eligible to livestream in YouTube Studio. YouTube’s current guidance says the channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days; it also says livestreamers must be at least 16. Eligibility rules can change, so confirm the status shown for your channel before scheduling a test. YouTube’s getting-started guidance.
In YouTube Studio, open Create > Go live to enter the Live Control Room. Create or schedule an encoder stream and choose its visibility before sending a feed. YouTube recommends private or unlisted visibility for a personal test. YouTube’s streaming tips.
- Private: Access is restricted to invited accounts. Choose this when only specific reviewers should watch.
- Unlisted: Anyone with the watch link can view it. Use this when reviewers need straightforward access, and share the link only with them.
Neither setting makes a test a public broadcast. Still, handle an unlisted URL carefully: people who receive it can pass it on.

Connect the encoder and inspect the Live Control Room preview
- In the Live Control Room, create or select the test stream and copy the stream URL and stream key.
- In your encoder, enter the YouTube stream URL and key in their corresponding fields. Treat the key like a password: do not share or publish it.
- Start streaming from the encoder, but do not click Go live on YouTube yet.
- Wait for the feed to appear in the Live Control Room preview. Check that the picture is framed as intended and that the planned podcast visual—camera, static artwork, or another image—is present. Confirm that audio is coming through.
- Proceed to Go live only when you are ready to run the test for viewers with the selected private or unlisted visibility.
YouTube recommends checking the preview before starting. Its encoder guidance also says to test before a live stream and to include audio and movement similar to what the actual stream will contain. YouTube’s encoder settings guidance.
Run a realistic test and check the connection
Use the audio and pacing planned for the podcast
Speak at roughly the level and distance you expect during the event. If the broadcast includes an intro, outro, transitions, or any other planned audio, include them in the test. Even a mostly static podcast benefits from a little movement in the video: for example, a presenter speaking or a transition you expect to use. This lets you check the actual combination of content and sound rather than an idle encoder feed.

Listen to the delivered stream, not only the encoder’s local monitor or preview. Optional closed-back headphones can help you hear the playback without room sound masking it; YouTube does not require a particular headphone or audio device.
Check upload headroom before and during the test
Run an internet speed test and compare available upload bandwidth with the encoder’s total streaming bitrate. YouTube recommends leaving 20% headroom above the stream’s bitrate. This is YouTube’s recommendation, not a guaranteed threshold: available upload capacity can vary, especially when other people or devices share the connection. Account for both primary and backup stream bitrates if you use a backup feed. See YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance.

If the connection is shared or inconsistent, reduce competing network use during the test and watch the Live Control Room’s stream health messages. A successful initial connection does not by itself show that the stream will remain stable under normal household or studio network use.
Verify playback as a viewer
Open the test’s watch page and, where applicable, the channel page. Check from a computer and a mobile device. Listen and watch for the same issues a viewer could notice: missing or unexpectedly quiet audio, interruptions, poor framing, or an image that differs from the planned podcast presentation. A local encoder preview shows what the encoder is sending; it does not establish that the delivered playback is acceptable.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Test backup recovery only if your setup uses a backup encoder
If the real broadcast has a backup encoder, exercise that handoff during a planned test. YouTube suggests stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet connection to check whether the player rolls over to the backup. Do this only when the test is intended to verify the backup path; it is not necessary for every podcast stream. Confirm that playback continues on the watch page after the changeover.

End the test cleanly and check its archive
- End the event in YouTube first.
- After YouTube shows that the event has stopped, stop sending the feed from the encoder.
- Open the Live tab in YouTube Studio and review the test recording. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived.
- Keep or remove the test archive as intended, and confirm its visibility is appropriate. A private or unlisted live test can leave behind a recording, so do not assume ending the event removes it.
YouTube’s livestream tips recommend stopping the encoder after ending the event on YouTube. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips and encoder guidance.
Before the real podcast broadcast
Review the stream’s title, description, audience, and visibility in the Live Control Room before the event. Change visibility to public only when the actual broadcast is ready for public discovery. If you reuse a prior stream or its settings, check each field rather than assuming the privacy setting or metadata has reset.
- Confirm the correct stream and encoder are selected.
- Check the preview and verify the audio before going live.
- Make sure the title, description, audience, and visibility match the real event.
- Use public visibility only when you intend viewers to discover the broadcast.
