Start the encoder with a representative feed, wait for the Live Control Room preview, and check the audio, any accompanying visuals, playback, stream health, and network stability. YouTube specifically recommends an unlisted test to check audio, video, and equipment.
Choose how reviewers can access the test
YouTube offers public, private, and unlisted visibility options. For a pre-launch rehearsal, YouTube recommends unlisted: the stream is kept out of public discovery, and you can share its watch link with intended reviewers. Do not treat an unlisted link as inaccessible to anyone who receives it.
The available guidance confirms the visibility choices but does not fully spell out the current access rules for private versus unlisted streams. If you need to restrict the test to particular viewers, check the current visibility and viewer-permission details in YouTube Studio before starting. An unlisted test is the clearest documented choice for checking the stream before public launch.
Run an unlisted test in YouTube Studio
- Create or schedule the encoder stream. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or schedule the stream. Set its visibility to Unlisted before starting the test.
- Set up the encoder. Copy the YouTube stream URL and stream key into your encoder. Treat the stream key like a password; if it is compromised, use YouTube’s documented reset flow. Start the encoder and wait until the feed appears in the Live Control Room preview.
- Send the actual planned program. Use representative programmed audio, not an unrelated placeholder. Include the visual loop, artwork, visualizer, or still image you intend to use, if any.
- Check the stream from the dashboard and watch page. Review stream health and any error messages in Live Control Room. Play the watch page on desktop and a mobile device, and listen and watch for quality problems.
- Check connection capacity. YouTube recommends enough upload bandwidth for the stream and backup encoder, with 20% headroom. For computer streaming it recommends Ethernet, and notes that a shared connection may reduce the bandwidth available to you. These are platform recommendations, not a guarantee about a particular ISP or location.
- Test backup failover only if you will use it. If the production setup includes a backup encoder, YouTube suggests stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet connection, then confirming that the player rolls over to the backup. If you are keeping a local recording, verify that the archive file is growing.
- End the rehearsal deliberately. Stop the test in YouTube Studio and let YouTube end the event before stopping the encoder. Before launch, check that the stream’s visibility is configured as intended.
What to check during a radio-stream rehearsal
Audio and transitions
- Confirm the correct audio source is reaching YouTube.
- Listen for unintended silence, clipping, unstable levels, or abrupt transitions.
- Check continuity across the parts of the program that will repeat. A short test can reveal a bad transition, but it does not establish that a 24/7 stream will remain trouble-free indefinitely.
These are practical checks based on YouTube’s recommendation to test the actual audio setup; YouTube does not provide a radio-specific pass/fail test.

Visuals and playback
If the audio stream uses artwork, a visualizer, or a looping video, check that the intended picture appears and plays correctly on the watch page. Verify playback on desktop and mobile, not only in the encoder preview.
Health, continuity, and analytics
Watch Live Control Room’s stream-health status and error messages during the rehearsal. The dashboard also exposes status and real-time analytics, but a clean test of any particular length is not certification of future 24/7 uptime.

- Intel Celeron N4120: 4 Cores & Threads, 1.1GHz Base Clock, Up to 2.6GHz Boost Clock, 4MB Cache, Intel UHD Graphics 600. The perfect combination of performance, power consumption, and value helps your device handle multitasking smoothly and reliably with four processing cores to divide up the work.
Latency
For a radio stream that does not depend on real-time audience interaction, normal latency is a sensible setting to evaluate. YouTube describes normal latency as suitable for non-interactive streams; low and ultra-low latency are intended for increasing levels of interaction and may increase buffering. Latency is a playback trade-off, not a privacy setting.
Use encoder settings that match your feed
Choose the resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate using YouTube’s current encoder guidance for that combination, then confirm the resulting feed in Live Control Room. Bitrate recommendations vary with resolution, frame rate, and codec, so there is no single bitrate that is correct for every radio stream. YouTube’s advice to test audio and movement similar to the planned broadcast also means the rehearsal should reflect the actual production setup.

YouTube Help’s live-filming tips state: “Test your audio, video, and equipment setup using an unlisted live stream to make sure everything looks and sounds good.”
Fix problems before making the stream public
- No preview appears: Confirm the encoder has started, that it is using the intended stream URL and key, and that the Live Control Room is open to the matching event. Wait for the preview before deciding the test is ready.
- Stream health reports an error: Read the specific Live Control Room message and check the encoder’s selected settings against YouTube’s guidance for the chosen resolution, frame rate, and codec. Avoid changing bitrate by guesswork alone.
- Audio is silent, clipped, or inconsistent: Check the selected source and levels in the encoder, then test the actual program and its transitions again. Listen on the watch page as well as monitoring the encoder.
- Playback buffers or drops: Check available upload capacity and connection stability, account for other users sharing the connection, and leave YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom for the stream and any backup encoder. Ethernet is YouTube’s recommendation for computer streaming.
- Reviewers cannot open the test: Recheck the visibility setting and current viewer permissions in Studio, then share the watch link only with intended reviewers. Do not assume unlisted means access is limited to a named group.
- A backup does not take over: If failover is part of the real launch design, test it by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet connection and confirm the player switches to the backup before relying on it.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is a continuous YouTube radio stream, StreamNeo is a cloud option for looping uploaded videos and playlists. You upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live; your computer does not have to stay on. It plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting from a camera.
