Start with the affected organization’s official notice or incident page. Confirm the message through a website or phone number you already know is genuine, then check which information was involved, when it was exposed, and what help the organization offers. An email breach lookup can add a clue, but neither a match nor a clean result tells the whole story: a match needs context, and no match does not prove you were unaffected.

Verify the breach notice before acting on it

A message claiming your information was exposed may be legitimate, but unexpected emails and texts can also be used to steal passwords or payment details. Do not use links or phone numbers in a surprise message to verify the claim. Instead, type the organization’s known web address, use a saved bookmark, or call a number from a statement or card. The FTC recommends acting quickly and checking what information was involved (FTC guidance on data breaches).

On the organization’s official site, look for an incident notice or contact its customer-support team through a known channel. Record the incident date, the kinds of information listed, and any assistance offered, such as account-security instructions or identity-recovery support. A notice can confirm that information was exposed even if you have not seen any sign of misuse.

Check an email address as one clue—not an all-clear

Have I Been Pwned (HIBP) lets people check whether an email address or username appears in breach data it has indexed. If a result appears, note the incident name, date, and listed data types, then confirm the incident with the affected organization or reliable reporting where possible. HIBP says some incidents are unverified or fabricated, some are sensitive and require verified access, and records can be retired. A username match may also refer to someone else who uses the same name (HIBP’s FAQ).

Watch for signs that exposed information is being misused

Exposure and identity misuse are different. A notice or lookup can indicate that information appeared in a data set; these warning signs may indicate someone is trying to use an account or identity:

Choose a response based on the information exposed

Password or login credentials

Change the exposed password immediately, along with any other account passwords that reused it. Use a unique password for each account and turn on multifactor authentication (MFA) where available. Check that recovery email addresses and phone numbers are yours, sign out of active sessions, and review email-forwarding rules for changes you did not make. The FTC suggests considering a password manager to create and keep track of unique passwords (FTC breach-response guidance; FTC account-recovery guidance).

Understand U.S. credit freezes, fraud alerts, and monitoring

These options address different risks. For U.S. consumers, the FTC says credit freezes and fraud alerts are free. A freeze restricts access to your credit report for opening new credit; contact Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion separately to place one. A freeze can add steps when you apply for credit or another service that uses a credit check. A fraud alert asks businesses to verify your identity before opening credit; an initial alert placed with one bureau is relayed to the other two (FTC identity theft guidance).

Credit monitoring tracks changes reported to credit bureaus, and the FTC says a service may monitor one, two, or all three. It does not necessarily alert you to bank-account withdrawals or tax-return fraud. Identity monitoring checks other databases, but can also miss certain types of misuse, including some public-benefit and tax-related activity. Before paying for a service, check which bureaus and data sources it covers, how often it checks, what triggers alerts, what recovery help is included, what insurance excludes, and the cost. A bank, employer, insurer, or card provider may already offer monitoring. A paid service cannot establish that no exposure occurred.
