Wi-Fi 8 is being developed to make connections more reliable in difficult conditions, not to guarantee higher peak speeds. An upgrade could matter if your home has interference, congestion, unstable coverage at the edge of a router’s range, or roaming problems between access points. But the standard is still in development, and a new router cannot fix every cause of poor internet performance.
Start by identifying what is actually failing: the internet connection, Wi-Fi coverage, or performance when several devices are active. That diagnosis will tell you whether to consider Wi-Fi 8, improve your existing layout, or wait.
What Wi-Fi 8 is designed to improve
Wi-Fi 8 is based on IEEE project P802.11bn. Its central aim is more reliable wireless performance when conditions are challenging, including congestion, interference, movement, coverage edges, and coordination among multiple access points. Qualcomm describes the goal as improving connectivity in “congested, interference-prone and mobile environments” in its Wi-Fi 8 white paper.
These are design goals and developing capabilities, not a promise that every home or device will see a noticeable improvement. The available sources do not establish an independently measured, representative improvement for a typical home.

Reliability is not the same as top speed
Do not assume that a Wi-Fi 8 router will automatically make a speed test faster. TP-Link lists the same typical maximums for Wi-Fi 8 and Wi-Fi 7: 320 MHz maximum channel bandwidth, 46 Gbps maximum PHY rate, and 4096-QAM. These vendor-listed maxima are not equivalent to the internet throughput one device will receive in a home.
TP-Link also advertises up to 30% higher throughput and up to 24% better interference handling on its Wi-Fi 8 overview. Those are vendor lab claims; the page does not state a date, and they should not be read as independently validated or typical household gains. See TP-Link’s Wi-Fi 8 overview.

Find the bottleneck before replacing equipment
Use the symptom, not the Wi-Fi generation number, to choose your next step.
If wired devices are slow too
Test a computer connected to the router by Ethernet, if possible. If wired performance is also slow, look first at the internet service, modem, or ISP. A new Wi-Fi router does not increase the speed supplied by a slow or impaired internet connection.

- SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
- WIFI 7 SPEED FOR TODAY'S FASTEST INTERNET PLANS: Up to 6.5 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands, 1.2x faster than WiFi 6. Keeps every device connected at the same time with MU-MIMO and OFDMA. Real-world speeds depend on your devices and plan.
- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Delivers up to 2,500 sq. ft. of coverage for up to 80 devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
If only some rooms have weak or unstable Wi-Fi
Distance, walls, floors, and access-point placement can matter more than the router’s generation. Try improving router placement or consider a wired access point or mesh system. Check whether the proposed Wi-Fi 8 capability addresses your specific coverage issue; simply buying a newer single router may leave a distant room with the same problem.
If performance degrades under load or amid interference
Several active devices, nearby networks, or other sources of interference may contribute to instability. Wi-Fi 8 is intended to address difficult conditions, but the benefit depends on the router, client devices, layout, and network environment. Compare currently available Wi-Fi 7 equipment with announced Wi-Fi 8 products, and verify which features the devices you rely on actually support.

If roaming between access points is the problem
In a home with multiple access points or mesh nodes, the arrangement and coordination among them matter. Check node placement and whether backhaul is wired. Do not assume that buying a Wi-Fi 8 router alone will resolve roaming issues across a mixed or older network.

Product announcements can come before a standard is final. TP-Link announced target windows of October 2026 for its Archer 8 router platform and Q1 2027 for its Deco 8 mesh system. Those are vendor roadmap dates, not proof of local stock, final certification, or retail availability. Check the TP-Link announcement and confirm details for your region before buying.
Before choosing a product, check:
- Standard and certification status: Is the product based on finalized specifications, and what certification does the manufacturer identify?
- Client support: Do your important phones, laptops, TVs, and other devices support the Wi-Fi generation and relevant features? A new router’s capabilities do not automatically become available to older clients. The available sources do not establish a complete Wi-Fi 8 client-compatibility matrix.
- Coverage and backhaul: Will you use one router, multiple access points, or mesh? Can access points use wired backhaul, and can you place nodes effectively?
- Wired capacity: Check WAN and LAN port speeds, port count, and backhaul needs against your internet plan and home network.
- Local conditions and support: Confirm regional spectrum rules, availability, firmware maturity, warranty, and vendor support.
- Total replacement cost: Account for the full mesh or access-point setup if one router cannot cover the home. Consider whether a current Wi-Fi 7 option would solve the immediate problem more effectively.
How Wi-Fi 7 fits into the decision
Wi-Fi 7 is a current comparison option: IEEE lists 802.11be-2024 as published. A Wireless Broadband Alliance residential field trial with CableLabs and Intel evaluated Wi-Fi 7 Multi-Link Operation (MLO) in a single-family home measuring 4,500 square feet, with walls, active interference, and traffic from multiple devices. It is evidence from that specific trial, not a Wi-Fi 8 comparison or a guarantee of results in other homes. Read the IEEE 802.11 page and the WBA trial account.
Quick Recap
Make the upgrade decision
- Test the internet connection: Compare Wi-Fi performance with a wired device. If both are slow, investigate the service plan, modem, or ISP before replacing wireless equipment.
- Map the trouble spots: Note which rooms, devices, and situations have problems. If the issue is confined to distant rooms, try placement changes or plan a wired access point or mesh system.
- Identify the conditions: Decide whether the main issue is coverage, interference, load, or roaming. Then check whether the router and client features being considered are relevant to that problem.
- Compare available options: Weigh current Wi-Fi 7 gear against announced Wi-Fi 8 equipment. Check certification, final specifications, regional availability, client support, wiring, and the cost of any additional access points.
- Wait if the network already works well: If coverage and performance meet your needs, there is no established typical-home improvement that justifies upgrading now. Waiting for finalized specifications, certification, independent testing, and broader client availability reduces early-adopter uncertainty.
