Frame generation can make an FPS counter jump while your controller feels no more responsive—or even feels delayed. The reliable way to find out whether it is the cause is a controlled on/off comparison in the same scene, followed by frame-time and display-latency measurements. If the symptom disappears when frame generation is disabled, then test the presentation path, latency feature, synchronization settings and base frame rate one at a time.
A higher generated-FPS number does not prove lower input lag. Generated images are inserted between traditionally rendered frames; they improve visual continuity but do not remove the time required to render the real frame that receives your input.
The fastest reliable diagnosis
Use this sequence before changing settings at random:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Choose one repeatable scene, camera route and controller action.
- Record refresh rate, VSync and VRR state, resolution, upscaler, graphics preset, frame-generation mode, frame cap, base FPS, generated FPS and any in-game latency indicator.
- Run the scene with frame generation off.
- Run it again with frame generation on, changing nothing else.
- Compare displayed frame-time consistency, 1% lows and measured latency—not just the average FPS counter.
- If the problem appears only with generation enabled, test Reflex or Anti-Lag, synchronization and the generation multiplier separately.
This A/B method isolates frame generation from CPU load, graphics settings, controller hardware and display behavior. It is a reproducible diagnostic procedure, not a claim that every game or driver uses identical latency behavior.

Prepare a fair A/B test
Pick a repeatable workload
Use a scene where the symptom is easy to reproduce: the same save point, benchmark route or training area; the same camera movement; and the same controller input, such as a fixed turn, aim sweep or repeated jump. Avoid testing in a changing multiplayer match or a scene that streams new assets unpredictably.
Freeze every variable except frame generation
Keep resolution, upscaler mode and sharpness, ray-tracing options, texture and shadow settings, window mode, frame cap, driver profile, VSync and VRR unchanged. Do not switch from exclusive fullscreen to borderless between runs. Record the monitor’s refresh rate because a 60 Hz display and a 144 Hz display can respond very differently to the same queue of frames.
Record a baseline
With generation disabled, note the average FPS, frame-time graph, 1% low FPS, GPU and CPU utilization, and any latency number the game exposes. Also note how the controller feels during the exact action you selected. This baseline tells you whether the game already stutters or feels delayed without generated frames.
Step-by-step test procedure
- Set the display path. Write down refresh rate, VSync state and whether variable refresh rate is active. Keep the same setting for both runs initially.
- Set a frame cap. If the game has a cap, record its value. Do not add a new cap between runs; a cap changes render and queue behavior.
- Disable frame generation. Restart the game if its implementation requires a restart. Let the scene settle, then perform the same camera and controller sequence for at least 20 to 30 seconds.
- Capture metrics. Record average FPS, frame-time variance, 1% low FPS and any latency indicator. A short video of the frame-time graph and the controller action helps you compare runs.
- Enable frame generation only. Keep all other options identical. Repeat the same route and input after the shader-compilation or asset-streaming activity has settled.
- Confirm that generation is active. For AMD Fluid Motion Frames (AFMF), the Adrenalin in-game overlay’s activity monitor can confirm generation status. For NVIDIA DLSS Frame Generation, use the game’s feature indicator or an approved telemetry tool.
- Repeat each condition. Run at least two passes in each state. If only one pass stutters, the event may be a transient streaming or background-process spike rather than a frame-generation effect.
- Change one presentation variable at a time. If generation is the only condition associated with the lag, test the latency companion feature, then VSync or VRR, then a lower generation multiplier or frame cap. Restore the previous value before testing the next one.
What to measure instead of trusting the FPS counter
Frame-time consistency
FPS is an average over a period; frame time is the interval between displayed images. A run that reports 120 FPS can still contain long 30- or 40-millisecond gaps that look like hitching. Compare the shape and spikes in the frame-time graph between the off and on runs.

One-percent lows
NVIDIA FrameView exposes a 1% low-FPS stutter metric. A substantial drop in the 1% low with generation enabled is evidence of worse consistency even if the average FPS rises. Use the same capture duration and scene for both runs.
Displayed-frame timing for DLSS-G
NVIDIA’s Streamline documentation warns that MsBetweenPresents is not suitable for judging DLSS-G frame pacing. DLSS-G can delay the image after the application calls Present(), so present-call intervals may look regular while the displayed image is late or uneven. The recommended value is MsBetweenDisplayChange, which measures when the display actually changes. NVIDIA states that FrameView, as of version 16.1, uses this display-change timing and is compatible with DLSS 4 Frame Generation and Multi Frame Generation.
Responsiveness and latency
Use an in-game latency indicator when available, but treat it as one measurement rather than an absolute truth. Compare the same indicator in both runs and pair it with the frame-time graph and your repeatable controller action. There is no universal controller-latency threshold that proves generation is acceptable or unacceptable for every player.
DLSS Frame Generation and AFMF: diagnostic differences
| Diagnostic axis | NVIDIA DLSS Frame Generation | AMD Fluid Motion Frames |
|---|---|---|
| Where it is enabled | Usually integrated in the game’s graphics options through NVIDIA’s DLSS-G technology. | Driver/software feature managed through AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition, with support exposed in the in-game overlay. |
| Latency companion | NVIDIA Reflex. NVIDIA describes Reflex as part of the intended responsive DLSS Frame Generation path. | AMD Radeon Anti-Lag. AMD recommends combining Anti-Lag with AFMF because AFMF can introduce additional latency. |
| Synchronization guidance | Test VSync, VRR, refresh rate and frame-generation multiplier together. NVIDIA documents queueing when generation produces frames faster than a low-refresh display can present them. | AMD’s current AFMF guidance lists VSync disabled in both the driver and the game and recommends a FreeSync monitor. Verify the exact guidance for your driver version. |
| Useful telemetry | NVIDIA FrameView; for DLSS-G, use MsBetweenDisplayChange rather than relying on MsBetweenPresents. |
Adrenalin’s in-game activity monitor can confirm whether AFMF is active. |
| Vendor base-FPS guidance | No universal minimum is established in the cited documentation. | AMD’s 2023 AFMF preview notes specify 55 FPS at 1080p and 70 FPS at 1440p or above. These are vendor-specific recommendations, not a universal rule. |
Why frame generation can feel stuttery or delayed
Generated frames do not replace base-frame rendering
Generation inserts predicted images between real rendered frames. Your input still has to reach a real base frame before it can influence the sequence. If the base game is running at an unstable or low rate, generated images can make motion look smoother without making controls respond sooner. AMD explicitly warns that AFMF may add latency and may be unsuitable for fast competitive titles.

Presentation queueing on a low-refresh display
With a high generation multiplier and VSync enabled, frames can be produced faster than a 60 Hz or similarly low-refresh display can show them. A queue builds, and the image responding to your latest input waits behind older frames. NVIDIA documents this presentation behavior for DLSS-G. Test a lower multiplier, a higher-refresh display or altered synchronization behavior while holding other settings constant.
Incorrect latency integration
Frame generation depends on correct frame indices and latency integration. NVIDIA’s Streamline checklist states that incorrect frame values or Reflex integration can increase input latency and stutter, and that proper Reflex integration is required for frame generation. A game update, mod, injector or driver change can expose an integration problem that was not present before.
Misleading present-call measurements
A present-call counter reports when the application submits work, not necessarily when the display shows the resulting image. This is why a regular MsBetweenPresents trace cannot by itself clear DLSS-G of responsibility. Use display-change timing and inspect 1% lows and frame-time variance.
Driver and display conditions specific to AFMF
AMD’s current AFMF documentation lists support for Windows 10 and Windows 11 and for DirectX 11, DirectX 12, Vulkan and OpenGL titles, subject to the stated hardware and driver requirements. It also lists VSync disabled in both the driver and game and recommends a FreeSync display. If your setup differs, first reproduce the symptom under the documented conditions before drawing conclusions about AFMF itself.

Interpret the A/B result
| Observation | Most likely interpretation | Next test |
|---|---|---|
| Lag and stutter appear only with generation on; base run is stable. | Generation, its latency integration or the presentation queue is involved. | Enable Reflex or Anti-Lag, then test VSync/VRR and a lower multiplier one at a time. |
| Average FPS rises, but 1% lows worsen and frame-time spikes increase. | Visual smoothness improved on average while pacing became less consistent. | Use display-change timing for DLSS-G; lower the multiplier or cap and retest. |
| Both runs have the same hitch at the same point. | Frame generation is not the sole cause; the base game, shader compilation, asset streaming or CPU/GPU saturation is implicated. | Investigate the base frame-time graph and utilization with generation disabled. |
| Controller delay changes when VSync or refresh rate changes. | Presentation queueing or synchronization is contributing. | Keep generation fixed and test VRR, VSync and a cap matched to the display. |
| Telemetry says generation is off, but the visual symptom remains. | The issue is not being caused by generated frames in that run, or the overlay is not reporting the feature correctly. | Confirm the feature state with the game’s setting and a second telemetry source. |
| Only one game or one recent update shows the problem. | Game-specific integration, a mod or a driver interaction is possible. | Retest without mods and compare the game’s current and previous driver profiles if available. |
Fixes to try after the test identifies generation as a factor
Start with the latency companion
For DLSS Frame Generation, enable NVIDIA Reflex using the game’s supported option. For AFMF, enable AMD Radeon Anti-Lag as recommended by AMD. Retest the identical scene rather than judging the change from a different level or camera path. Because incorrect integration can itself create problems, disable third-party latency injectors while testing.
Control the presentation queue
Test the monitor’s VRR range and VSync behavior with generation unchanged. If the symptom occurs on a low-refresh display, reduce the generation multiplier or use a frame cap that prevents an excessive backlog. Change only one setting per run and record the result; otherwise you cannot tell which change helped.
Raise the quality of the base frame
If the base FPS is below the vendor’s guidance or fluctuates sharply, reduce GPU-heavy settings, use a less demanding resolution mode or improve CPU headroom before enabling generation. For AFMF, AMD’s preview guidance was 55 FPS at 1080p and 70 FPS at 1440p or above; treat those values as a starting recommendation, not a promise of low latency.

Check for integration changes
Remove frame-generation mods and overlays temporarily, verify that the game and driver are current, and retest after a full restart. NVIDIA’s documentation specifically identifies incorrect frame values and Reflex integration as causes of increased latency and stutter. If the issue began after an update, preserve the before-and-after settings and report the reproducible scene to the game developer.

Vendor-specific measurement notes
NVIDIA DLSS Frame Generation
Use FrameView for a consistent capture of smoothness, responsiveness, per-frame latency and 1% low FPS. For DLSS-G, select or inspect display-change timing rather than interpreting MsBetweenPresents as the final pacing result. Keep Reflex state documented in every run because the intended DLSS Frame Generation path includes it.
AMD AFMF
Use the Adrenalin in-game overlay’s activity monitor to confirm AFMF status. Follow AMD’s documented display conditions—VSync disabled in the driver and game and FreeSync recommended—when establishing a baseline. Record whether Anti-Lag is enabled, because AMD warns that AFMF can add latency and recommends Anti-Lag for the optimal experience.
Do not overlook the controller and display
If the same controller action feels delayed with generation disabled, generation is not the sole cause. Continue the investigation with the game’s base frame pacing, CPU or GPU saturation, the display’s synchronization path and the controller itself. Test a second controller or a wired connection only after the graphics A/B test, and keep the game scene identical so you do not confuse two changes.
Likewise, a display-path problem can feel like controller lag even when the renderer is healthy. Compare the result at a different refresh rate or with VRR behavior changed, but preserve the frame-generation state while doing so. A change that tracks the display setting points toward presentation timing rather than the generated image algorithm alone.
A practical decision rule
- Generation off is smooth and responsive; on is worse: keep generation disabled for that title until Reflex or Anti-Lag, synchronization and multiplier tests identify a stable combination.
- Generation on raises average FPS and keeps frame times consistent: it is helping visual smoothness in that workload, but continue to judge responsiveness by the measured latency and your repeatable controller action.
- Both modes stutter: fix the base game or display path first; generation is not the root cause by itself.
- Results change with refresh rate or VSync: treat queueing and presentation timing as the primary suspect.
The decisive evidence is not the largest FPS number. It is a repeatable same-scene comparison showing whether displayed frame timing, measured latency and controller response change when frame generation is the only variable.
