How can I tell whether an old object is an unexploded landmine? You cannot reliably determine that from appearance alone. If an object could be a mine or other munition, treat it as dangerous: do not approach or touch it, carefully leave by the route you used to enter, and report it to local authorities from a safe place.
Why appearance cannot tell you it is safe
A possible landmine may be difficult to identify, and a suspicious object may instead be another kind of military munition or a component. Rust, age, damage, partial burial, small size, or an incomplete appearance does not prove that it is harmless. The U.S. Army says ordnance can be clean or rusty, exposed or buried, and complete or in parts—and should be considered dangerous regardless of size or age. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) also warns that munitions may become more dangerous with age.
Do not use a photo, online guide, or closer inspection to make a safety determination. USACE says munitions can be easy or hard to identify; recognition means noticing a possible hazard, not diagnosing what the object is.
What to do if you find a possible mine or munition
Follow the safety sequence described by USACE as Recognize, Retreat, Report. Do not return to the object to confirm its identity or get a better look.

It accurately locates quarter‑sized metal items buried as deep as 12 inches underground, offering trustworthy performance for serious treasure‑hunting hobbyists.
- Multi‑Scene Custom Search Modes: 5 practical search modes meet diverse prospecting demands. All‑Metal Mode conducts full‑range detection; Disc Mode filters unwanted junk metals; Memory Mode locks signals of specific metals; Jewelry Mode targets high‑purity gold & silver, low‑purity alloys may get weak signals; Pinpoint Mode enables fast, precise positioning. Freely switch modes to cut ineffective searching and greatly boost your overall working efficiency.
- User‑Friendly Build for Quick Setup: Thanks to the upgraded collapsible cam‑lock and screw‑free search head, assembly finishes in seconds. It features a 2X larger backlit screen for clear readouts, soft silicone buttons and padded elbow support for comfortable fatigue‑free one‑hand operation. Built‑in power‑on memory saves your custom settings, so you won’t need to re‑adjust parameters every time you start the machine.
- All‑In‑One Outdoor Prospecting Package: This complete treasure‑hunting bundle includes all outdoor essentials. You get 2 ready‑to‑use batteries, a large‑capacity backpack for easy transport, volume‑adjustable over‑ear headphones for clear signal reception, a tough manganese‑steel digger for labor‑saving excavation, plus a detailed user manual to guide beginners through every operation step.
- IP68 Submersible Coil & Flexible Fit: The search coil reaches IP68 waterproof rating for treasure hunting on beaches, shallow water and in various weather conditions. Note: The control console is NOT waterproof. With 5‑level sensitivity and a telescopic stem adjustable from 21‑53 inches, it fits adults and kids of different heights perfectly. Grab it and share joyful outdoor adventure time with your whole family.
1. Recognize the possibility
If an object could plausibly be a mine, shell, grenade, or other munition, assume it may be dangerous. You do not need to identify its type before acting.
2. Retreat without disturbing it
Do not approach, touch, move, disturb, or collect the object. Carefully leave the area by the route you used to enter. Do not go closer to take a photograph or place a marker on or near it. Official general guidance does not set one retreat distance for every situation, so follow any instructions from local authorities.

- The Ultimate Treasure Hunter Gift: Give the gift of adventure! This beginner-friendly metal detector makes a top present for hobbyists of all ages. Pairs perfectly with detecting bags, headphones, or stud finders for a complete search kit.
3. Report it from a safe place
Once away, contact the appropriate local authority. Give the location and a general description based only on what you already saw; do not return to gather details. USACE directs people in the United States to call 911. Outside the U.S., contact local police or emergency services, or a local mine-action authority where one exists. Emergency numbers and reporting arrangements vary by country.

Is a rusty old shell safe?
No appearance-based judgment can establish that it is safe. Treat a rusty, damaged, partly buried, small, or incomplete object that could be ordnance as dangerous and leave it alone.

What if someone has kept it for years?
Past handling or long-term storage does not establish safety. USACE warns that a munition kept for years can still pose an explosive hazard. Do not move or disturb it; report it to authorities.
Should I mark the spot?
Do not approach the object or return to place a marker. USACE advises noting the area once safely away; Army guidance says to mark the general area rather than the munition if possible. Make no attempt to do so if it would require going back toward the object.
Quick Recap
