Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallStart with the exact symptom and where it happens, then check one possible cause at a time. “No Service” or “Searching,” for example, means the iPhone is not connected to a mobile network; it does not identify whether iOS, the carrier, the account, SIM setup, or hardware is responsible. A carrier outage or account block can look like a phone fault, while a problem that began after an update is a clue—not proof—that iOS caused it.
1. Record exactly what fails and when
Before changing settings, note the symptom in the words you see or experience: “SOS,” “No Service,” “Searching,” “I can’t make or receive calls,” “Cellular Update Failed,” or “I can’t set up an eSIM.” These are different problems with different troubleshooting paths.
Record the iPhone model and iOS version, when the problem began, and whether it followed an iOS update, SIM or eSIM change, travel, a location change, a drop, or liquid exposure. Note whether the issue happens every time, in one place, or across multiple locations. Also distinguish what is affected: cellular data, calls, eSIM activation, updating, charging, display, audio, or another function. This context helps organize evidence; no single timing or symptom proves a cause.
2. Check the carrier and location before blaming the iPhone
For cellular service or call problems, ask your wireless carrier to verify what only it can see: whether the account is active and in good standing, the plan supports the service, the location has coverage, there is an outage, the device is blocked or barred, and there are carrier-side call errors or billing blocks. Apple notes that only the carrier can access and manage account details. See Apple’s SOS, No Service, and Searching guidance and call troubleshooting steps.

If the carrier confirms an outage, inactive line, account restriction, unsupported plan, or network-side call error, follow the carrier/account path. If it says those checks are clear, continue with device troubleshooting; that still does not establish that the hardware is faulty. If you are travelling internationally, ask whether data roaming needs to be enabled.
3. Try device-side checks one at a time
For a cellular connection problem, Apple recommends these checks. Test the affected service after each change and note whether anything changed; changing several things together makes the result harder to interpret.

- Small and portable design for easy handling.
- High-definition screen display for clear readings.
- Automatic scan detection for efficient testing.
- Supports both Lightning and Type-C interfaces.
- One-key retest function for quick results.
- Refresh the connection: Open Control Center or Settings, turn Airplane Mode on, wait at least 15 seconds, then turn it off. Restart the iPhone and check the symptom again.
- Check iOS: Connect to Wi-Fi, then go to Settings > General > Software Update and install an available update if appropriate. A problem appearing just after an update does not by itself show that the update caused it.
- Check carrier settings: Connect to Wi-Fi, open Settings > General > About, and install a carrier settings update if one is offered.
- Check the active line: On a Dual SIM iPhone, confirm the intended line is enabled in Cellular settings. If using a physical SIM, reseat it; contact the carrier about a SIM that may be damaged, ill-fitting, or transferred from another phone.
For failed or missed calls, Apple also identifies settings, outdated software, and the network as possible causes. Check carrier settings and iOS updates, then test after each step rather than assuming the call symptom has the same cause as a data or signal problem. Apple’s call guidance covers this path.
4. Treat eSIM setup as a separate branch
An eSIM activation failure is not the same as a general cellular outage. Apple lists Wi-Fi or hotspot access, an active plan, an eSIM from a provider that supports eSIM, and the latest iOS version the iPhone can use among the setup prerequisites. Check whether the line appears in Cellular settings, try Airplane Mode and a restart, then check for provider settings at Settings > General > About. If activation still fails, contact the provider and give it the exact error message. Have the phone number, provider account identifiers, and the iPhone’s IMEI or EID available. See Apple’s eSIM setup troubleshooting.

5. Use the symptom pattern as evidence, not a verdict
Compare the problem across locations, services, and time. These patterns can help decide what to check next, but none independently proves an iOS, carrier, or hardware fault.
- One location or area: A problem limited to one place makes coverage or a local outage worth checking with the carrier.
- Several cellular services at once: If calls and data both fail, check the carrier, account, line status, and connection before treating it as a single-app or single-service issue.
- One service only: Calls failing while data works, or vice versa, is useful detail for the carrier and for choosing the relevant Apple troubleshooting path; it does not name the cause.
- After an update, SIM change, travel, impact, or liquid exposure: Record the timing. It narrows what to investigate, but timing alone does not confirm causation.
- After a specific change: If the symptom changes after one update or setting adjustment, record the before-and-after result and report it. A repeatable change is evidence, not a complete diagnosis.
6. Escalate to Apple diagnostics or service when appropriate
For iPhone models running iOS 18 or later, Apple says the Apple Support app can run additional diagnostics that may help determine the source of some device issues. The app’s diagnostics are a useful clue, not a guarantee that every symptom or fault can be diagnosed remotely. Apple’s separate diagnostics-mode instructions are framed around Self Service Repair and System Configuration, rather than as a general-purpose test for every iPhone owner. The prompt in that flow says: “Diagnostics allow Apple to identify potential hardware and software issues with this device.”

If the carrier has ruled out account and network issues and hardware is suspected, the iPhone may need service. Use Apple’s iPhone support and service options or Apple-certified service. Do not infer a failed component from a symptom alone.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. For iOS update or restore errors
Update and restore errors follow a different troubleshooting path from cellular service. Apple’s iOS update and restore error guidance addresses error-specific software and connection checks, and notes that hardware may be involved in some cases. Use the steps for the exact error displayed rather than treating every failed update as evidence of a hardware problem.
