There is no universal signal that proves an AI agent is accessing a website for you. A website owner can inspect request logs for clues such as the User-Agent header and request context, but those clues do not prove either that the client is an AI agent or that you authorized it. Cryptographic signatures proposed for automated traffic could help verify an agent’s identity; they still would not establish who gave it permission.

What a website can see in its request logs

When a browser, app, or automated client requests a page, the website can record details about the HTTP request, including headers. Those details can help an operator assess what software appears to be making requests. They are not, by themselves, proof of an agent’s identity or of a person’s involvement.

User-Agent: a claimed software identity

The User-Agent header is intended to describe the requesting application, operating system, vendor, or version. A website might see a browser name, a library, or a bot label in it. But this is metadata supplied with the request, not cryptographic authentication. Clients can alter or combine user-agent information, and browsers may reduce the details they expose. MDN explains the header’s purpose and limitations in its User-Agent header guide.

That makes a label such as “AI bot” a clue, not a verified identity. MDN also cautions that user agents can present themselves as other browsers or include information associated with multiple browsers, making detection based on the string unreliable. See MDN’s guide to browser detection using the user-agent string.

Fetch Metadata: context about the request

Some browsers attach Fetch Metadata headers that describe how a request relates to the page or site that initiated it. For example, Sec-Fetch-Site can report same-origin, same-site, cross-site, or none; Sec-Fetch-Mode and Sec-Fetch-Dest describe the request mode and destination. These fields help a site understand request context, not name an AI agent. MDN describes them in its Fetch Metadata guide.

Sec-Fetch-User can indicate a request associated with user activation where supported. It is not present for every request, is not supported everywhere, and does not prove that an agent was delegated a task. MDN documents the header at Sec-Fetch-User.

Computer Privacy Screen Filter for 24 Inch 16:9 Aspect Ratio Monitor
  • Privacy Screen Filter Size: If the visible area of your display has the following dimension: Width x Height (Exclude Frame/Arrow 1 to 3 mm errors): 20 15/16" x 11 13/16" (532 mm x 299 mm), then this filter is good for you. Very Important to double check your screen's Width and Height excluding frame before ordering. It's not recommended to make your selection based solely on your screen's diagonal size
  • Left and Right Privacy: Not block visibility directly behind you, regardless of distance. The privacy filter makes the screen appear dark when looking at it from an angle (left and right 30 to 180 degree), but clear when looking directly at it. To change the privacy levels, simply adjust your monitor's brightness level accordingly
  • Matte and Glossy Sides: It's a reversible privacy screen filter, giving you the flexibility to choose glossy or matte finish. The matte side will have less glare, however the glossy side will have stronger privacy
  • Perfect for Open Workspaces: Ensure your working space is bright and well lit. Privacy screens do not work in dimly lit areas
  • Two Installation Option: Option 1 uses clear double side adhesive strips that securely attach to any computer screen. Option 2 (for computer screens with a raised bezel only) uses slide mount tabs that easily stick to the display frame, allowing you to take out the privacy screen filter easily as needed

What a website operator can reasonably infer

An operator can compare the claimed User-Agent with other request details and patterns in available logs. Fetch Metadata can add context about how a browser initiated a request. Together, these signals may inform a judgment about whether traffic looks automated, but the cited sources establish no universal combination that proves a request came from an AI agent or on whose behalf it was made.

  • What the headers may suggest: the software a client claims to use and the context of a browser request.
  • What they do not prove: that the client really is the named agent, that a human authorized its activity, or which person gave authorization.

How cryptographic signatures could improve identification

The IETF’s HTTP Message Signatures for automated traffic Internet-Draft proposes signing automated HTTP requests. It describes a Signature-Agent header and key discovery so a receiving website can check a request’s signature against an agent signing identity. That is stronger evidence of which identity signed the request than a self-declared User-Agent string.

The draft is revision 00 and lists an expiry date of 5 March 2027; check the Datatracker for its current status or a newer revision. It is a proposal, not evidence that all agents or websites support the scheme. Even when a signature is verified, it establishes the signing identity under the proposal’s trust model—not that a particular person authorized the agent’s work.

Agent identity and user authorization are separate questions

To answer “who signed this request?” is not to answer “who authorized it?” The Web Bot Auth draft addresses identifying and verifying an agent’s signing identity, while leaving how a user directs an agent outside its scope. A site would need a separate basis for establishing authorization by a human; the request headers and agent signature described here do not supply that proof.
