To find out whether a Starlink train may be visible where you are, enter your location in a current satellite-pass tracker and check the predicted local time, direction, and elevation. Look for a pass near dusk or dawn, when the sky is dark for you but the satellites may still be lit by the Sun. Then check whether the satellites are still close together: a newly launched group gradually spreads out, so a recent launch alone does not mean you will see a train. A forecast is an opportunity to look, not a guarantee.
Check a location-specific pass forecast
Start with a tracker that accepts a city or coordinates and provides local pass times and sky directions. For example, FindStarlink lists predicted start and end directions, maximum elevation, and an estimated brightness indication. Its times are estimates, and a satellite passing overhead may still be too dim to see.
Use the forecast to answer three practical questions: when to go outside, which part of the sky to watch, and how high the pass is expected to travel. A generic statement that a train is visible “tonight” cannot account for your location.
Confirm it is still a train
Satellites released together initially travel in a close group. As they climb toward operational orbits, they spread out, so a later pass may show individual satellites rather than a compact line. Space.com’s guide says trains are best seen in the days immediately after a launch.

Check the tracker’s current prediction for the relevant batch rather than relying on launch date alone. A dated example shows why: azmth’s record for the 2026-204 batch reported that the group had spread out and no longer appeared as a train by around September 15, 2026. That is a historical example, not a prediction for a current pass or a typical dispersal schedule.
Look near dusk or dawn
The useful viewing window is when your sky is dark while sunlight still reaches the satellites. They are visible by reflected sunlight, not by lights of their own. Space.com’s Skywatching Editor Daisy Dobrijevic puts it this way: “We can see Starlink satellites only when they reflect sunlight; they do not possess lights of their own.”

Dusk and dawn often provide that overlap. A pass listed during the night is not automatically visible: if the satellite is in Earth’s shadow, it may not reflect enough sunlight toward you. LiveEarthViewer’s explanation of pass predictions describes the same basic requirement: darkness at the observer and sunlight on the satellite must coincide.
Use direction and elevation to choose a viewing spot
Read the forecast’s start and end directions and its maximum elevation before heading out. Face the indicated part of the sky and choose a spot with a clear view in that direction; buildings, trees, and other obstructions can hide some or all of a pass. A higher maximum elevation generally makes the path easier to follow than a low pass near the horizon, but it does not by itself establish that the satellites will be bright enough to see.

Local times and orbital predictions can change. FindStarlink warns that its timings are not fully accurate, and LiveEarthViewer characterizes its prediction as a heads-up rather than a promise. Treat the listed time as a window to be ready, not an exact appointment.
Why a predicted pass may not be visible
- The satellites are not illuminated for your viewing geometry. A dark sky alone is insufficient if the satellites are in Earth’s shadow.
- The train has dispersed. Satellites from an older batch may appear separated rather than as a close line.
- Brightness varies. An estimated brightness label is not a guarantee of naked-eye visibility. Anthony Mallama’s 2021 analysis of more than 100,000 visible-light magnitudes describes time-dependent illumination and brief brightness flares; it does not predict the visibility of a particular upcoming pass. See the preprint on arXiv.
- Weather or obstructions block the view. Clouds, nearby buildings, trees, and other obstacles can prevent a sighting even when a pass is forecast.
- The orbit data or timing has changed. Trackers rely on orbital information that can change, and their predictions are estimates.
A quick checklist before you go outside
- Enter your city or coordinates in a pass tracker and use the local time it provides.
- Check the predicted direction, maximum elevation, and whether the forecast concerns a recently deployed batch that may still be close together.
- Favor a dusk or dawn pass, when your sky can be dark while the satellites remain sunlit.
- Pick an unobstructed viewing spot and allow for uncertainty in the time and brightness.
About 90 minutes per orbit is the approximate orbital period cited in Space.com’s 2026 guide, attributing the information to FindStarlink. It describes orbital motion, not how long a satellite train will remain compact or how long a pass will be visible from your location.
