The reliable way to authenticate a Pokémon Red or Blue cartridge is to combine several physical checks: the label, colored shell and molded top mark, security screw, circuit board, battery construction, and seller evidence. A sharp label or a game that boots is not proof by itself. Counterfeits can copy one convincing feature, while authentic cartridges can have changed labels, boards, or batteries across different print runs.
For a purchase, request clear photographs before paying. For a cartridge you already own, inspect the exterior first, then open the shell with the correct tool and compare the board with a verified original from the same region and revision.
Use multiple checks, not a single “tell”
Authentication is a process of corroboration. Compare independent evidence in this order:
- Front label quality and regional details.
- Shell color, molding, and the Nintendo GAME BOY mark on top.
- Security screw type and condition.
- Printed-circuit-board (PCB) layout, Nintendo markings, and battery construction.
- Save behavior, treated only as supporting evidence.
- Seller photographs, history, and return protection.
A cartridge that passes only the label check or only a boot test should remain unverified. A board that matches a region-specific genuine reference, combined with consistent shell and label details, is much stronger evidence.

1. Inspect the front label closely
Check printing quality and spelling
Genuine labels have crisp type, clean logos, and well-defined artwork. Look at the small text, Nintendo logo, Pokémon lettering, copyright lines, and the edges of colored areas. Warning signs include blur, pixelation, fuzzy color registration, a glossy home-printer appearance, uneven trimming, or misspelled words. A label that looks like a scan printed at low resolution deserves additional scrutiny even if the cartridge otherwise boots.
Look for the impressed number, but do not rely on it
The Cartridge Authentication Resource Project (CATRP) notes a small impressed number near the lower-right area of the label on many genuine examples. It can support an authenticity judgment when the rest of the cartridge matches, but it is not a deciding test: counterfeiters can reproduce the detail. Treat it as corroboration, never as a security feature.
Match the region before judging the label
Compare the cartridge with a verified copy from the same market. Regional packaging, ratings marks, language, and print layouts can differ. Red, Blue, and Yellow were produced in multiple print runs, so a label that differs from a photograph of another release is not automatically fake. Record which region and release you are comparing before rejecting a variation.

2. Examine the shell and top mark
Color and material
Authentic Pokémon Red and Blue cartridges use the colored shells associated with those games. A gray shell, an obviously mismatched color, rough molding, or poor edge finishing should trigger a closer inspection. A replacement shell can be fitted to a genuine board, however, so shell color alone cannot establish whether the electronics are original.
The concave Nintendo GAME BOY oval
Inspect the molded oval on the top edge. Genuine examples use a concave oval Nintendo GAME BOY mark with consistent lettering and molding. A flat oval, incorrect letters, shallow detail, or a poorly formed recess is suspicious. Compare the shape and depth with a known genuine cartridge under similar lighting; photographs can exaggerate or hide molding differences.
Check for physical consistency
Look at the seam around the shell, label alignment, screw recess, cartridge edge, and molded ridges. Rough flash, irregular seams, or a label that sits crookedly can indicate a counterfeit or replacement shell. These observations identify something to investigate; they do not distinguish a fake from every legitimate repair or reshell.

3. Check the security screw safely
The CATRP guide identifies a Game Bit security screw as the expected fastener on a genuine shell. A Phillips-head screw is suspicious because it does not match that construction. It can also indicate that someone has opened the shell, replaced the battery, or transferred the board into another case. Opening is not proof of fraud, but it is a reason to inspect the PCB and ask the seller what was changed.
Use a 3.8 mm Game Boy cartridge screwdriver (Game Bit driver) rather than forcing a flathead or Phillips tool into the recess. The correct bit reduces the chance of stripping the screw and preserves evidence for a later inspection. Work on a clean surface, keep pressure straight down, and store the screw separately while the shell is open.
4. Open the shell and authenticate the PCB
Prepare before opening
Opening the shell is useful only if you can compare what you see with a verified original. Take photographs of the cartridge before disassembly, note the region printed on the label, and avoid touching contacts or components. A board from another region or revision may legitimately look different from the reference you found, so choose the comparison board carefully.
Look for Nintendo markings and board layout
CATRP identifies Nintendo branding on authentic boards and a group of four rectangles arranged 2×2 on the back as common genuine-board features. Nintendo Life also recommends comparing the entire board against a verified original rather than relying on one logo. Check component placement, silkscreen text, traces, chip shapes, solder work, and the overall outline. A copied logo on an otherwise wrong board is not convincing.
Use photographs of both sides when comparing. Differences in board text can reflect print runs or regional revisions, so a mismatch must be interpreted alongside the board’s complete layout. A board that has the expected markings, placement, and construction for the same region is stronger evidence than a board that merely resembles a picture found online.
Inspect the save battery
Red and Blue use battery-backed save memory. On a genuine save board, the coin battery is soldered in place. A glued-in dummy battery, a loose battery, or a large black epoxy blob where the battery and related circuitry should be is a major warning sign. Photograph the battery tabs and solder joints before touching anything; a previous battery replacement can explain fresh solder without making the cartridge counterfeit, but the seller should disclose it.

Separate a genuine board from a genuine-looking shell
A real Nintendo board inside a replacement shell is not the same thing as an untouched original cartridge. Ask whether the cartridge was reshelled, relabeled, or repaired. If the seller cannot answer, describe the item conservatively as an unverified cartridge until the board and transaction history support a stronger claim.
5. Interpret booting and save behavior correctly
Insert the cartridge in a compatible Game Boy system and check whether it starts, loads a game, and can create a save. This is useful evidence that the contacts and memory are functioning, but it is not an authenticity test. Counterfeit cartridges can be made to boot, and an authentic cartridge can fail because of dirty contacts, damaged hardware, or a depleted battery.
A dead battery does not prove a fake
The battery preserves save data when the system is off. As it ages, an authentic cartridge can lose existing saves or stop retaining new ones. A game that boots while failing to keep a save is therefore consistent with a genuine cartridge whose battery needs replacement. Conversely, a cartridge that saves successfully has not been proven genuine by that behavior alone.

Test without damaging evidence
Clean contacts only with appropriate, non-abrasive methods and avoid scraping the edge connector. Record the result: whether the game boots, whether a new save remains after power cycling, and whether an old save is present. Use these observations to support the physical inspection, not to override a suspicious shell or PCB.
6. Account for print runs and regional revisions
Red, Blue, and Yellow had multiple print runs. The ESRB logo can be white or black, and text printed on the board can vary. Those differences are not enough to reject a cartridge when the region and revision do not match your reference.
Build a like-for-like comparison:
- Match the cartridge’s sales region and language.
- Compare the same game and, when possible, the same print-run or board revision.
- Check the complete board layout, not one line of silkscreen text.
- Consider whether a replacement label or shell explains an otherwise legitimate board.
When evidence conflicts, record the conflict instead of forcing a yes-or-no answer. For example, a sharp region-correct label paired with a board from a different revision may indicate a legitimate variation, a repair, or a counterfeit assembly. More inspection is needed.

7. A practical buying workflow
Request the right photographs
Before purchasing, ask for clear, well-lit photographs of four views:

- The screw head and surrounding recess.
- Both sides of the PCB, if the seller has already opened it or agrees to do so safely.
Do not accept a tiny marketplace thumbnail as evidence. Ask for original-resolution images and a second angle if glare hides the label or screw.
Ask direct condition questions
- Has the cartridge been reshelled?
- Has the label been replaced or reprinted?
- Has the battery been replaced, and was the replacement soldered?
- Does it retain a new save after the system is switched off and on?
- Can the seller provide a return if the PCB does not match the description?
Written answers create a record. Evasive replies, refusal to show the screw, or claims that a boot test alone proves authenticity should lower your confidence.
Compare before paying
Place the supplied images beside photographs of a verified original from the same region and revision. Compare label sharpness, color, shell molding, top mark, screw, PCB markings, component placement, battery construction, and any visible repair work. Treat each category as a separate piece of evidence; do not let one impressive detail cancel several mismatches.
Protect the transaction
Use a payment and marketplace process that gives you a meaningful return window. Save the listing, photographs, seller messages, and your own unboxing pictures. If the item arrives with a different shell, label, screw, or board than shown, those records make a return or dispute substantially easier.

Do not make a rushed authenticity claim
Call the cartridge “unverified” when the label looks right but the board is not shown, when the shell and PCB come from different regions, or when photographs are too poor to inspect. This is more accurate than labeling it genuine or fake on incomplete evidence.

Use an independent inspection
A reputable retro-game shop or authentication service can inspect the shell and board against known originals. Choose an inspector who will show the evidence—board photographs, revision comparison, and any repair findings—rather than issuing an unsupported verdict. Ask whether the inspection covers a reshell or relabel, since a genuine board does not prove that every external part is original.
Preserve the cartridge if you plan to resell it
Document every modification. If you replace a dead battery, keep the original battery and photograph the work. Describe the cartridge as repaired, reshelled, or relabeled when applicable. Clear disclosure prevents a later buyer from mistaking a genuine board for an untouched original.
9. A quick decision checklist
- Label text, logos, and artwork are sharp, correctly spelled, and region-consistent.
- The lower-right impressed number, if present, agrees with the reference but is not being used as sole proof.
- The shell color and molding match the game, and the top Nintendo GAME BOY oval is concave and cleanly formed.
- The fastener is a Game Bit security screw, or any different screw is explained by documented repair.
- The PCB matches a verified same-region board in markings, layout, and components.
- The save battery is a soldered coin cell rather than a glued dummy or unexplained epoxy blob.
- Boot and save results have been recorded as supporting evidence only.
- The seller has answered reshell, relabel, battery, and return questions.
- You have return protection if the cartridge differs from its photographs or description.
If several boxes remain unchecked, pause the purchase and seek an independent inspection.
Why Nintendo’s seal is not enough
Nintendo Support describes its seal this way: “This symbol is your assurance that the product has been evaluated and licensed by Nintendo for use with its systems.” A seal or logo can support provenance, but it does not replace inspection of a second-hand cartridge. Labels, shells, screws, and boards can be swapped after manufacture, so authenticity must be judged from the cartridge’s current physical evidence.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a fake Pokémon Red or Blue cartridge boot and save?
Yes. Booting and saving show that the cartridge functions, not that it was manufactured by Nintendo. Use the label, shell, screw, PCB, and battery checks together.
Does opening the shell prove a cartridge is fake?
No. Opening may reveal a repair, battery replacement, reshell, or relabel. It becomes useful evidence only when the board is compared with a verified same-region reference.
Is a black or white ESRB logo a deciding authenticity test?
No. Both appearances can occur because the games had multiple print runs. Match the region and revision before treating a difference as suspicious.
