Check the game’s current official store listing before you buy. On Steam, the decisive evidence is the Languages table: look at English under Interface, Subtitles, and Full Audio separately. On Nintendo Switch, check English in the eShop listing and remember that the game follows the console’s selected language only when that language is supported. An English store page, trailer, or screenshot does not prove that gameplay is translated.
What “supports English” can mean
“English support” is not a single feature. A Japanese indie game may offer an English menu while leaving story dialogue in Japanese, or provide English subtitles with Japanese voices. Another release may include complete English voice acting. Treat these as different capabilities rather than a simple yes-or-no label.

For a text-heavy adventure, role-playing game or visual novel, interface-only support may still leave the main story inaccessible. Conversely, a game with English subtitles and Japanese audio may be exactly what you want. Decide which layer matters to you before reading a listing.
The fastest reliable check before purchase
- Identify the exact release. Search the official listing using the full title and the platform you intend to use. A Steam build, Switch release, regional physical edition and later patched version can have different language data.
- Open the developer or publisher’s listing. Prefer the platform’s official store page or a dated announcement from the developer. Retailer descriptions and old user comments can describe a different edition or an earlier launch state.
- Find the language matrix. On Steam, scroll to the Languages table and locate the English row. Read the marks under Interface, Full Audio and Subtitles independently.
- Match the matrix to your need. English in Interface alone is not evidence of translated dialogue. English in Subtitles indicates text coverage for supported spoken or displayed dialogue; English in Full Audio indicates voice recordings are offered.
- Check the date and edition. If English was announced for a later update, confirm that the current listing or patch information reflects that update and that it applies to your platform and region.
This process is more dependable than judging from an English-language page. Steam treats store-page localization and in-game localization as separate settings, so a publisher can translate the description while the game remains Japanese-only.

How to read Steam’s Languages table
Interface
An English mark in Interface means the game identifies English as an available interface language. This normally covers navigational text and system-facing labels. It is the minimum useful check for players who need to understand menus, but it does not establish that the narrative or tutorial text is translated.
Subtitles
An English mark in Subtitles is the relevant signal when you want English dialogue text while retaining Japanese voices. In a game with little or no voice acting, the store’s categorization may still be the best available indication of dialogue-text support; read the developer’s notes as well when the listing is unclear.
Full Audio
Full Audio is separate from subtitles. A game can show English subtitles while offering Japanese audio only. Do not infer English voice acting from an English trailer, an English cast mention, or an English interface mark unless Full Audio is explicitly marked.

If English is absent from the table, assume the current store listing does not promise English support. If only one or two columns are marked, limit your expectation to those capabilities. A missing mark can also reflect an incomplete or outdated listing, so a current developer announcement may resolve a contradiction; keep the announcement’s date in mind.
Steam’s own documentation describes these choices as separate options for Subtitles, Interface and Full Audio for each language. That separation is why reading the row column by column matters.

Store-page English versus in-game English
Steam supports two independent localization areas: the store page and the game itself. Store-page localization covers text such as the description, screenshots’ captions and other sales information. In-game localization covers the files and settings used after installation. Either can exist without the other.
- An English description can accompany Japanese-only menus and dialogue.
- Japanese store copy can describe a game that nevertheless includes an English language option.
- An English trailer or screenshot may show a specially prepared asset rather than the language set shipped in your build.
Use the Languages table for the pre-purchase decision, not the language in which the listing happens to be displayed. If the two signals conflict, seek a dated statement from the developer or publisher and confirm the exact platform release.
Confirming the language after installing on Steam
Steam Support advises checking the installed game’s language setting because language files may need to download separately. Use this path:
- Open Library in the Steam client.
- Right-click the game and choose Properties.
- Open the Language tab.
- Look for English in the language selector. If it is offered, select it and allow Steam to download any required files before launching.
- Start the game and inspect its own settings for text, subtitle and voice choices. Some titles expose separate controls even after Steam’s language is changed.
If English is not offered in the Language tab, Steam is not presenting an English package for that installed build. Do not assume that changing the Steam client’s general language will translate a title that does not list English. If English is offered but the game remains Japanese, finish the download, restart the game and check its internal language settings; the developer may separate text and audio controls.
Checking a Japanese indie game on Nintendo Switch
Read the eShop listing for the exact title
Open the Nintendo eShop page for the game and verify that English is listed among the supported languages. Check the page for the edition and region associated with your console or purchase. A physical cartridge and a downloadable release can receive different updates or language packages, so do not transfer assumptions between them.

Understand the console-language rule
Nintendo states that a game or software application defaults to the language selected on the console as long as that language is supported by the software. Setting the Switch to English therefore does not add English to a Japanese-only title; it only selects English automatically when the game includes it.

- Check the current eShop entry rather than a retailer’s specification sheet.
- Look for a developer update that announces an English patch and note its release date.
- After installation, open the game’s options to see whether text and voice can be selected independently.
- If the software remains Japanese despite an English listing, verify that the console is online and fully updated, then contact the developer or Nintendo support with the title, region and version.
Platform, region and update differences
Language support belongs to a particular build, not necessarily to a franchise or title name. Before buying, record four details:
- Platform: Steam, Switch or another platform may ship different language files.
- Edition: A regional physical release, digital edition and special edition can have separate metadata or patches.
- Region: Store catalogs and cartridge releases can differ by market.
- Timing: English may be available at launch, added in a later update, or announced without being released yet.
When a developer says English will arrive in a future patch, treat that as planned support rather than current support until the store listing or an installed build confirms it. Conversely, a title that launched Japanese-only may gain English later. Recheck the official listing immediately before purchase if the announcement is old.
Evidence quality: what to trust when sources disagree

When sources conflict, prefer the current official matrix, then a dated statement from the developer that clearly names the platform and update. If neither resolves the conflict, ask the developer before paying and save the answer with its date.
A practical decision checklist
Use this checklist for any Japanese indie game:
- Have I opened the official listing for the platform I will use?
- Is English explicitly listed rather than merely used in the store description?
- Does the English row cover Interface, Subtitles, Full Audio, or only one of them?
- Do I need translated menus, story text, English voices, or all three?
- Am I buying the same edition and region described by the language information?
- Was English available at launch, or does it depend on a later patch?
- If I already own it on Steam, does Library > Properties > Language offer English?
- If I am buying on Switch, does the eShop listing name English as supported?
A “yes” to the listing question and a match between the marked capabilities and your needs is enough for most purchases. If any answer is uncertain, pause rather than treating promotional language as proof.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Assuming an English menu means an English story
Interface support is narrower than subtitle support. For a narrative game, look for English under Subtitles as well.
Assuming Japanese audio means Japanese-only text
Japanese voices and English subtitles commonly coexist. Check the audio and subtitle columns independently instead of using the voice language as a shortcut.
Assuming English subtitles mean English dubbing
Subtitles and Full Audio are separate Steam capabilities. Confirm Full Audio if spoken English is important.
Changing the console or client language and expecting translation
System settings select among languages the game already supports. They cannot create an unsupported translation.
Relying on an old listing
Localization can be added after release. Recheck the current official page and update notes, especially when a listing or review predates an announced patch.

Buying from a reseller without checking the platform page
Reseller copy may combine specifications from another region or edition. Use it only as a prompt to verify the official source.
When the listing still does not answer the question
Contact the developer or publisher with a precise question: ask whether the exact platform and region include English Interface, Subtitles and Full Audio, and whether the files are available at launch or require a patch. Avoid asking only “Is it in English?” because that wording can produce an answer about menus while you need story subtitles or voice acting.
Keep the response’s date and the version it describes. If the developer later updates the language matrix, use the newer official information. This record is particularly useful for early-access releases, ports and games whose localization is being rolled out in stages.
Bottom line for buyers
For Steam, the Languages table is the primary pre-purchase check, and its Interface, Subtitles and Full Audio columns answer different questions. Confirm the installed package through Library > Properties > Language when you own the game. For Switch, verify English in the eShop listing; the console’s language setting only takes effect when the title supports that language. Treat English store copy, trailers and retailer text as presentation—not proof of translated gameplay—and verify the exact platform, edition, region and update status before you buy.
