Pale or bleached patches on the leaves that turn brown, dry, and brittle are a strong clue that a plant may be getting too much direct sun. The pattern is not proof: watering, fertilizer or salt, humidity, temperature, pests, and disease can cause overlapping damage. Check the plant’s light needs and recent conditions before changing its location.
What sun damage looks like
Strong sunlight and heat can break down leaf chlorophyll. On plants that cannot tolerate the exposure, affected areas may first look pale, faded, or bleached, then become brown and brittle. Dry soil can make scorch worse. The damage to affected tissue is permanent, so look for whether new damage stops after you adjust the light rather than expecting old patches to turn green again. University of Maryland Extension and Iowa State University Extension and Outreach describe these symptoms and effects.
Where the damage appears can help: leaves facing a bright window are more exposed, so patches concentrated on that side support sun scorch as a possibility. But leaf patterns vary by species. Some plants, including weeping fig and tropical hibiscus, may drop leaves after a light change rather than develop the classic scorched patches, according to Iowa State’s houseplant problem guidance.
Check other likely causes before moving the plant
Brown tips or spots, yellowing, and leaf drop are not unique to sun injury. Iowa State lists improper watering, salts or fertilizer, low humidity, drafts, pests, disease, and abrupt environmental changes among possible causes. The University of California Statewide IPM Program also identifies several possible causes of brown tips and leaf spots.

- Review recent changes: Did the plant move closer to a window, move outdoors, or experience a sudden change in light or temperature?
- Check its needs: Compare the species’ preferred light with the direct exposure it actually receives.
- Inspect growing conditions: Check soil moisture and look for signs of pests or disease; consider whether fertilizer, humidity, or drafts have changed.
Do not move a plant into a dark spot just because its leaf tips are brown. If you find a likely cause, address it and watch for further damage and the condition of new growth.
Why a window’s direction does not tell the whole story
Light at the leaves depends on more than whether a window faces north, south, east, or west. Intensity, duration, and quality matter, and exposure changes with distance from the glass, curtains or insect screens, window type and cleanliness, season, weather, and outdoor shade. South-facing windows, bay windows, and sunrooms are often among the brightest locations, but a bright location is not automatically harmful to every species. University of Maryland Extension’s lighting guidance covers these factors.

That guidance gives about 10,000 footcandles as the peak intensity of outdoor direct sunlight. This is context for outdoor light—not an indoor injury threshold. The sources do not establish one footcandle reading or duration that diagnoses sun damage across houseplant species. A light meter, smartphone app, or SLR camera can help compare locations, but you can also observe how the plant responds to a careful placement change; Iowa State discusses these measurement options in its houseplant care guidance.
How to reduce exposure without adding a new shock
- Choose a gentler location: If the species is getting more direct sun than it tolerates, move it farther from the window. University of Maryland Extension also suggests filtering intense summer sunlight with a sheer curtain.
- Make the change gradually: Avoid moving a plant abruptly between very different light conditions. Iowa State recommends transitioning over several weeks when intensity changes substantially.
- Take care when moving it outside: Many houseplants prefer indirect light, and a plant accustomed to a bright indoor window can scorch within hours in direct outdoor sun. Start with filtered light or morning exposure rather than hot midday or afternoon sun for plants that prefer indirect light. Monitor the pot because outdoor containers dry faster. See University of Minnesota Extension’s outdoor-transition guidance.
- Use acclimation guidance as a starting point, not a universal destination: For taking an indoor plant outside, Maryland Extension recommends initially placing it in full sun for two hours per day and gradually increasing the time. That is an acclimation direction, not a reason to give every houseplant full sun; the plant’s species-specific needs still determine its appropriate final exposure.
Keep healthy leaves unless there is a separate reason to remove them. Scorched areas will not recover, but after correcting the exposure, the plant’s subsequent growth can help you judge whether the change worked.

Compare the plant’s exposure before choosing a fix
When deciding whether to move a plant or filter window light, consider its light tolerance, how intense and long the direct exposure is at the foliage, seasonal and window effects, and whether you can make the change gradually. Moving it farther from the window costs nothing; a sheer curtain is an optional way to soften intense light when filtering is appropriate. Neither fix addresses damage caused by watering, fertilizer, pests, or another problem.
