Most digital game purchases give you a license linked to an account, not unrestricted ownership of the software. A disc or cartridge gives you a physical object, but it may still rely on a software license, activation, patches, an account, or online servers. The word “buy” on a store page does not settle the question.
To classify a particular purchase, identify the format, read the product and account terms, check transfer restrictions, and test what is required to install and play offline. This guide reflects platform terms and consumer guidance available in October 2026; rules differ by country, platform, game and edition, and can change.
The practical answer: license, physical copy, or both
A game transaction can involve several different rights at once:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- A software license: permission to run the game under stated conditions.
- An account entitlement: a record on a platform account that permits downloading or launching the game.
- Physical possession: ownership or custody of a disc, cartridge, box or code card.
- Service access: permission to use multiplayer, cloud saves, streaming or other online functions while the service operates.
These are not interchangeable. You can possess a disc without owning the copyright in the game. You can hold a digital license without possessing any transferable object. You can own a cartridge and still lose access to a server-dependent feature. The exact result depends on the title, edition, platform and terms shown at checkout.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
What “licensed, not sold” means
Copyright normally remains with the developer or publisher. A license is the contract that gives you limited permission to install and use the software. It can specify who may use it, on which devices, for what purpose, and under what conditions access can be suspended.
PlayStation’s purchase wording states: “When you order or purchase a product from PlayStation Store, you buy a personal license to use that product for private, non-commercial use.” Nintendo’s purchase terms say: “Some Products, such as software and digital content, are licensed, not sold, to you.” The Federal Trade Commission has explained the consumer implication this way: “what you really got when you clicked ‘buy’ is often merely a license to access the content.”
Those statements explain why a checkout button can say “Buy” while the legal grant is limited. They do not mean every digital game is a rental with a fixed end date. A license may remain available for years, but it remains subject to the platform’s account rules, device authorization, digital-rights management (DRM), and service terms.

Identify exactly what is being sold
Classify the offer as a direct download, subscription-catalog access, boxed disc, cartridge, download code, cloud-streaming entitlement, or bundle. A box may contain a disc, a code, or only an entitlement trigger. Read the contents list instead of judging from the package design.
-
Find the license language
Search the store listing, checkout disclosure, software end-user license agreement (EULA), and account agreement for:
- “licensed, not sold” or “personal license”;
- “non-transferable” or “for personal use”;
- “subject to the terms” or “authorized device”;
- “subscription” or “while subscribed”;
- “access may be suspended or terminated”;
- DRM, activation, authentication or online-service requirements.
The product-specific page matters. Microsoft’s digital-goods rules state that an individual store page can impose rights or limitations that differ from general rules, so do not rely only on a platform’s summary policy.

Check account and platform dependence
Ask whether you can install and launch the game without the purchasing account, the platform’s authentication service, a subscription, or a continuing network connection. Also check how many consoles or computers may be authorized and what happens if an account is suspended or lost.

Check transfer, lending and resale rights
Look for an express right to transfer the digital entitlement. In the cited PlayStation terms, the license is personal and not transferable unless applicable law requires otherwise. Nintendo’s terms similarly describe products as for personal use and restrict commercial resale. A physical disc may be handed to another person, but an unused code, downloadable content (DLC), account-bound bonus or online entitlement may not travel with it.
-
Check offline survivability
Before describing a purchase as permanent, determine whether the complete playable build is on the media, whether a day-one or mandatory download is required, whether an activation code has already been redeemed, whether online authentication is needed, and which features depend on active servers.
Digital download, physical media and subscriptions compared
| Question | Digital license | Physical disc or cartridge | Subscription or cloud entitlement |
|---|---|---|---|
| What you receive | An account-linked permission or entitlement to download and use software. | A tangible item, plus the software rights and dependencies for that title. | Access to a catalog or streamed game while the subscription and service rules permit it. |
| Can you transfer it? | Usually restricted by platform terms; an express transfer right is uncommon. | The media may be lendable or resellable, but codes, DLC, authentication and online services may not transfer. | Normally tied to the subscriber’s account; catalog access is not ownership of each game. |
| Offline play | May require account authentication, DRM checks or platform availability. | Can work offline for some titles, but the disc may be incomplete or require activation, patches or a server. | Usually unavailable when the subscription, catalog listing or streaming service is unavailable. |
| Dependence on services | Store, account, DRM and server changes can affect access. | The media can preserve more access, but patches, activation and live-service components can still fail. | Entirely dependent on subscription status and the provider’s catalog or streaming infrastructure. |
| Convenience | Immediate download and no disc to store. | Requires keeping the media and compatible hardware. | One subscription can provide many games without buying each one. |
| Best fit | Convenience and access within one platform ecosystem. | Possession, collecting, lending or possible resale, subject to title-specific limits. | Trying a changing catalog rather than retaining a particular game. |
This table is a practical comparison, not a guarantee for every game. The product page, EULA and account terms control the specific result.
How digital purchases behave in practice
The account is usually the key
A digital purchase is commonly recorded against the account that paid for it. The platform may let you install it on authorized devices or use a console-sharing feature, but that does not necessarily create a transferable property right. If the account is closed, suspended, compromised or inaccessible, the entitlement may be unusable until the account issue is resolved.
“Buy” does not promise unrestricted use
Store wording describes the transaction from a shopping perspective. The license defines the permitted use. Restrictions can cover private versus commercial use, copying, modification, device limits, region, and whether another person can use the account. Read the EULA even when the store page presents a one-click purchase.

DRM can limit devices and future access
DRM can require periodic authentication, bind a game to a platform family, or prevent the software from working on another console brand. The FTC specifically identifies DRM as a control that can affect where a digital game works. A long period in which a game remains available does not remove those contractual and technical conditions.
What a disc or cartridge really proves
Physical media proves that you have a tangible object. It does not, by itself, prove that every game asset, feature or future update is present or that the software license has no conditions.
Check whether the media contains the game
Some packages include the complete launch build; others contain a small installer, a license key, or a code for a download. A used package may also have a code that was already redeemed. The back of the box, retailer description and console installation screen can reveal whether the media is playable by itself.
Separate the disc from add-on rights
DLC, season passes, preorder bonuses and cosmetic items are often delivered as one-time codes. A buyer can resell the disc while the code remains redeemed to the original account. Multiplayer access may likewise depend on a separate account or service.
Expect title-specific offline limits
A physical game may require a mandatory update, an online activation check, a platform account, or a server for the campaign, menus or save synchronization. Conversely, some titles retain substantial offline functionality from the media. Only a title-specific test can establish which case applies.
Subscriptions, cloud streaming and bundles
Subscription catalogs
A subscription grants access for the subscription period and under the catalog’s rules. It should not be described as ownership of every included game. A title can leave the catalog, become unavailable in a region, or require a separate purchase after a trial or promotional period.

Cloud streaming
Streaming provides a service session rather than a local copy. Play depends on the provider’s servers, account authorization and a suitable network connection. Even if a menu labels the action “play,” there may be no downloadable build that you can keep.

Bundles and cross-generation offers
A bundle can contain several different rights: a physical disc, a digital entitlement, DLC codes and a subscription trial. Read each component separately. A disc-linked digital entitlement is not the same mechanism as a standalone digital purchase; Xbox documentation distinguishes disc-linked rights from other digital rights.
Transfer, lending and resale: the dividing line
Transferability is often more informative than the word “ownership.” For a digital game, look for a clear procedure that moves the entitlement to another account without sharing credentials. If the terms call the license personal or non-transferable, assume you cannot sell or lend the account-based right unless applicable law provides an exception.
For a physical copy, ask four separate questions:
- Can the disc or cartridge itself be handed to another person?
- Is a required activation or DLC code unused?
- Does the recipient need the original account or a new account?
- Will online services still operate for that title and region?
A used-media buyer may receive a playable base game but not the extras advertised on the original box. Confirm the code status and online requirements before paying a premium for a “complete” edition.

There is no universal promise that any game will remain playable forever. A digital license can stay in an account for many years, yet installation or launch may depend on the store, authentication service, DRM servers or platform hardware. A disc can preserve more of the software, but a shutdown can still disable multiplayer, cloud saves, activation or required downloads.
To estimate shutdown risk for a specific title, record whether:

- the first launch requires an online check;
- updates are mandatory;
- the game is primarily a live service;

Do not infer future availability from the fact that a game launches offline today. Service policies and technical requirements can change.
Platform terms to inspect
PlayStation
Look at the PlayStation Store product page, the purchase terms and the software EULA. The quoted PlayStation language characterizes the transaction as a personal, private, non-commercial license. Check regional wording, authorized-console rules, sharing provisions and any notice about online requirements for the individual game.
Nintendo
Nintendo’s purchase terms expressly state that some software and digital content are licensed rather than sold. Review the product listing and account terms for personal-use limits, resale restrictions, code redemption and whether the title requires an account or network connection.

Xbox and Microsoft services
Microsoft’s digital-goods rules distinguish digital rights from catalog access and allow a particular store page to set additional limitations. Xbox also documents disc-linked digital entitlements as a separate mechanism. Check whether your copy is a direct purchase, a subscription entitlement, a disc-based license or a bundle containing several rights.
A buying checklist you can save
- Write down the platform, region, edition and whether the offer is a disc, cartridge, code, download, subscription or stream.
- Open the exact product page and save the listed contents.
- Search the terms for “licensed,” “personal,” “non-transferable,” “subscription,” “DRM,” “activation,” “authorized device” and “online service.”
- Confirm whether the complete game is on the physical media or whether a download is mandatory.
- Check whether codes or DLC are one-time, account-bound or already redeemed.
- Determine whether launch, saves, multiplayer or other major features require authentication or active servers.
- Read the platform’s account-suspension and access rules.
- If lending or resale matters, require an explicit transfer path; do not assume that possession of a box creates one.
- Keep the receipt, edition details and the terms version that applied on the purchase date.
How to describe your purchase accurately
Use precise wording in your records and listings. “I own the disc” describes physical possession. “I have a digital license on my account” describes an account entitlement. “I have access through a subscription” describes service access. Avoid saying “permanent copy” unless you have verified the media contents, offline behavior and the absence of an unresolved activation dependency for that particular title.
The safest conclusion is title-specific: a digital checkout generally grants a license governed by platform terms; physical media gives you an object that may support broader possession and possible resale, but does not guarantee perpetual offline play. The terms, technical requirements and contents of the exact edition decide which rights you actually received.
