A deleted trailer is not automatically a leak, a fan edit, or an official video. Classify it by provenance: find a dated record from the developer or publisher, then match the surviving file or metadata against that record. If no first-party chain survives, the accurate conclusion is unverified, not “official” or “fake.”
The most reliable investigation preserves the dead link, recovers its metadata, checks first-party announcements and media libraries, compares any surviving copy frame by frame, and treats copyright actions and visual polish as supporting clues rather than proof.
Use a four-label conclusion
Decide what the evidence establishes before judging whether the trailer looks professional. Use one of these labels and explain the evidence behind it:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →| Label | Minimum evidence | What it does not mean |
|---|---|---|
| Official first-party upload | A dated publisher or developer record names or embeds the trailer, and the candidate file matches it. | It does not grant permission to download, edit, or republish the video. |
| Authorized reupload | A platform holder, event organizer, press partner, or other distributor has a documented relationship with the rights holder and the asset matches. | A channel calling itself “official” is not documentation of authorization. |
| Fan-made or edited | The file contains material changes, combines unrelated footage, or has explicit creator attribution that conflicts with a first-party version. | A fan edit can use entirely genuine game footage. |
| Unverified | Records are missing or conflict, or the surviving file cannot be matched confidently. | “Unverified” is not a claim that the trailer was fake; it is the correct limit of the evidence. |
One identical copy can have different provenance from the original upload. A rehosted file may be bit-for-bit the same as a publisher upload while still being an unauthorized upload, so identify the asset and the uploader separately.

1. Preserve every trace before searching
Start with an evidence file that records what existed when you found it. Save the dead URL exactly as displayed, including the video ID, and keep an unaltered copy. Make a separate working copy for notes, screenshots, and annotations.
- Record the video title, channel or uploader name, channel URL if available, thumbnail, description text, upload date, and visible view count.
- Capture comments that identify a launch event, developer, platform, or original source. Treat comments as leads, not authentication.
- Note where you found the link: a publisher post, forum thread, social account, news story, search result, or private message.
- Save screenshots of the error page and any remaining title, channel, or date information. Platform pages can change after deletion.
- Hash or otherwise preserve a downloaded copy if one exists, and keep the original file read-only. Work from a duplicate when checking frames or audio.
Do not “clean up” the evidence by correcting a misspelled title or replacing the uploader name with a presumed publisher. Those small changes can hide the distinction between a first-party post and a fan reupload.
2. Recover the original page and metadata
Enter the exact URL or video ID into the Internet Archive Wayback Machine and any other lawful cache that captured the page. Search several dates, because one capture may show the title while another preserves the description or thumbnail.
What an archive capture can establish
- That a page existed at a particular time.
- The title, uploader, description, thumbnail, and visible upload date.
- Links to a publisher announcement, event page, or embedded player.
- Whether the page identified itself as a trailer, teaser, gameplay video, or another format.
What it cannot establish by itself
- That the archived video bytes are still playable or unchanged.
- That the uploader had permission from the rights holder.
- That a title such as “Official Trailer” was truthful; it may have been written by the uploader.
- That a later mirror is the same edit. A page capture can preserve metadata while the media file remains unavailable.
Keep the archive timestamp with every fact you take from it. Historical studies of online trailers note that public archives and press-mediated records can introduce inaccuracies, so use an archive as a continuity record and connect it to a first-party source whenever possible.
3. Look for a dated first-party record
Search the developer’s and publisher’s official website, news posts, press kit, media library, verified social accounts, and store announcements. Use the exact game name, likely trailer wording, and the date range suggested by the archived page.
Search for matching context
- Trailer type: announcement, reveal, gameplay, launch, cinematic, or release-date trailer.
- Timing: an event date, pre-order opening, beta announcement, or launch window that explains the upload.
- Asset details: matching thumbnail composition, runtime, aspect ratio, subtitles, logos, and end card.
- Language: region-specific titles, ratings notices, or localized captions can explain small differences between legitimate versions.
A dated post that names the trailer or embeds the same asset is the strongest practical evidence. A press-kit download or media-library entry is also strong when its filename, runtime, and visual details match the candidate. A verified first-party channel upload becomes more persuasive when its title, date, thumbnail, and video align with that announcement.

Do not treat a search snippet, fan wiki, screenshot, or forum recollection as a first-party record. They can reveal useful search terms, but they do not establish who made or authorized the upload.

4. Compare the surviving video, not just its title
If a mirror, screen recording, or local copy survives, compare it with the first-party reference in a consistent order. A fan edit often preserves recognizable footage while changing enough of the presentation to alter the trailer’s provenance.
- Confirm the runtime. Note the exact duration and whether one version includes a pre-roll, ratings card, or post-credit logo.
- Check frame order. Look for missing shots, rearranged scenes, repeated clips, or footage spliced from several official videos.
- Inspect transitions and crops. A changed aspect ratio, zoom, mirror image, or hard cut can indicate an edit rather than a regional encode.
- Compare audio. Check voice-over wording, music mix, sound effects, volume changes, and whether a creator replaced the original track.
- Check subtitles and on-screen text. Compare language, timing, ratings notices, legal text, website addresses, and release-date cards.
- Inspect logos and end cards. Publisher, developer, platform, and event marks should appear in the same order and at the same timestamps as the reference.
- Look for compression differences. Re-encoding alone does not make a copy unofficial, but a different compression pattern combined with changed cuts can reveal a second-generation edit.
Record each difference with a timestamp and a screenshot. A single lower resolution or different file size is weak evidence; a changed voice-over, new music, or reordered scenes is material evidence of editing.
5. Establish the uploader’s relationship
Uploader identity is a separate question from asset identity. A publisher-owned channel is direct evidence of a first-party upload. Other channels require documentation of the relationship.
Relationships that may support authorization
- A platform holder’s page announces that it is distributing the trailer.
- An event organizer identifies the publisher or developer as a participating partner and hosts the same file.
- A named press outlet or media partner is linked from a dated publisher announcement or press page.
- A developer employee posts the trailer from a verifiable work account and the studio confirms the release elsewhere.
Save the page that documents the relationship and its date. A channel description, watermark, or claim of “exclusive official upload” is not enough on its own. If the relationship cannot be documented, use the evidence for the video itself but do not upgrade the uploader to authorized status.

YouTube’s copyright guidance says, “Under copyright law, when someone creates original work – like a YouTube video – usually that means they automatically own the copyright to it.” It also says, “We can only tell who uploaded a video first, not who owns it or has permission to upload it.” A match is not conclusive either: YouTube explains, “Just because we’ve found a matching video doesn’t mean it’s infringing on your copyright.” This guidance was accessed on October 19, 2026.
Apply those limits carefully:
- An early upload date identifies who uploaded first on that service, not who created the game or authorized distribution.
- A Content ID match may concern music, gameplay footage, or another element and may not identify the marketing owner.
- A takedown can result from a rights complaint, territorial restriction, mistaken claim, or another platform action.
- A publisher can remove its own trailer for a campaign change without the original upload having been fan-made.
Use copyright signals to locate records and explain removal, then return to the first-party chain for the provenance judgment.
7. Weigh evidence in a fixed hierarchy
When clues conflict, rank them instead of counting them. Stronger, independent first-party records should outweigh many weaker reposts.
| Rank | Evidence | Proper use |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Dated publisher or developer announcement that names or embeds the trailer | Primary confirmation of the release and its context. |
| 2 | Publisher or developer press kit or media-library download with matching file details | Confirms the asset when the public video page is gone. |
| 3 | Verified first-party channel upload matching title, date, thumbnail, and video | Confirms the channel’s upload and supports first-party provenance. |
| 4 | Dated platform-holder, event, or press-partner page showing distribution authority | Supports an authorized reupload when the relationship is documented. |
| 5 | Archive capture of the original page and metadata | Preserves existence and context; it does not prove permission by itself. |
| 6 | Reuploads, screenshots, search snippets, fan wikis, comments, and visual style | Useful for finding leads, but insufficient as standalone provenance proof. |
Independent means that two copies should not simply repeat the same unattributed claim. Ten mirrors that all copied one deleted description are still one weak lead, not ten confirmations.
8. Know what visual clues can and cannot prove
Polished cinematics, familiar menus, professional voice acting, publisher logos, watermark placement, and clean audio can help you locate an origin. They are not authenticity tests. A skilled fan editor can reproduce branding and production values, while an official regional or event encode can look different from the publisher’s master.
Academic analysis published in 2014 discusses logos, descriptions, music credits, footage disclaimers, and copyright notices as trailer context. These details are useful for identifying a likely campaign, but they still need confirmation against a first-party record. Treat every visual clue as a search lead:

- Search a distinctive line of voice-over or on-screen text in quotation marks.
- Use a unique frame or end card to find an official announcement or press image.
- Identify a music credit, then check whether the same track appears in the publisher’s reference version.
- Compare disclaimers such as “work in progress,” “not representative of final gameplay,” or platform-specific notices.
Do not infer authenticity from a logo alone. Logos can be copied, removed, or added during a fan edit.

9. Handle a developer denial or a contradictory record
A direct statement from the developer or publisher can outweigh a polished presentation and a widely repeated upload title. Preserve the statement’s date, wording, account, and any link to the original post.
For example, in reporting about a purported Shenmue 4 trailer, PC Gamer quoted a statement from Ys Net saying the video had “absolutely no connection” to the studio. A direct developer denial is materially stronger than a repost title or visual resemblance, although the report itself is secondary. If the original developer statement is available, use that primary statement and identify the report only as context.
If a first-party announcement appears to confirm a trailer while a later denial rejects a specific file, separate the claims: the game may have had an official trailer, while the circulating copy may be a fan edit or an unrelated presentation. If the surviving file cannot be matched to either record, label it unverified rather than forcing a choice.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.10. Compare multiple surviving candidates
When several mirrors exist, evaluate them against the same axes. The candidate with the strongest independent first-party chain should be called official; a candidate with documented distribution authority but a non-publisher uploader should be called an authorized reupload.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →| Comparison axis | Questions to ask | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| First-party ownership | Is the channel or host owned by the publisher or developer? | Direct ownership is stronger than an uploader’s label. |
| Dated announcement alignment | Does a contemporaneous official post name or embed this trailer? | Connects the asset to a release event. |
| Exact file match | Do runtime, frame order, audio, subtitles, logos, and end card match? | Separates an official encode from a fan edit. |
| Uploader relationship | Is a platform, event, or press partnership documented? | Supports authorized distribution. |
| Archive continuity | Do archived pages preserve the same title, thumbnail, and description over time? | Shows that metadata was not invented after deletion. |
| Edit and audio differences | Are there new cuts, music, narration, crops, or overlays? | Material changes can make a copy fan-made or edited. |
| Explicit statements | Has the developer confirmed or denied this specific video? | A direct statement can resolve otherwise ambiguous clues. |
Keep a short comparison log rather than relying on memory. Note the source, capture date, file or page details, and your confidence for each axis.

11. Apply a copyright-safe sharing boundary
Finding an official origin does not make a trailer free to download, modify, or republish. Check the publisher’s permission terms, the platform license, music rights, and the law that applies where you live before sharing a recovered file.
For a public article or social post, safer options include linking to a surviving authorized page, quoting the official announcement, or describing the evidence without uploading the video. If you must preserve a file for research or reporting, restrict access, keep the original unchanged, and document its source and permission status.
A removal notice is not a permission statement. It may reflect a rights complaint, territory restriction, campaign change, or another platform decision, so describe the reason only when the notice identifies it.
12. Write the final finding so its limits are clear
A useful conclusion names the label, the strongest evidence, and the unresolved gap in one compact statement. For example:
- Official first-party upload: “The publisher’s dated announcement embeds a video whose runtime, cuts, audio, thumbnail, and end card match the archived candidate.”
- Authorized reupload: “The event organizer’s dated page identifies its distribution partnership, and its file matches the publisher’s reference version.”
- Fan-made or edited: “The circulating copy rearranges scenes, replaces the voice-over, and credits an independent creator; no first-party page matches that edit.”
- Unverified: “An archived page proves that a video page existed, but no first-party record or surviving file connects this copy to the developer.”
Avoid stronger wording than the evidence supports. “Looks real,” “was uploaded first,” and “was taken down” describe observations, not provenance.
