Start with the original filename and the clues visible inside the image, then inspect embedded metadata and filesystem dates. A screenshot may reveal a useful capture time, but it rarely proves an exact moment by itself: metadata can be absent or edited, and Created or Modified dates often describe copying, downloading or editing rather than capture. When dates conflict, preserve the original and report a time range or uncertainty instead of claiming false precision.
A reliable order for checking a screenshot
- Preserve the original. Make a working copy, retain the original filename and note where and how you received the file. Re-saving, exporting or sending an image through a messaging service can replace metadata.
- Read the filename. Automatic capture tools often include a date and time. Treat that value as a clue only: anyone can rename a file, and some systems use the save time rather than the capture time.
- Inspect what is visible. Look for a status-bar clock, notification time, calendar date, message timestamp, weather report, event poster, software version or other content tied to a known period. These clues establish a window, not cryptographic proof.
- Read embedded metadata. Look for a capture or
DateTakenvalue, plus EXIF, XMP or PNG text fields. A capture field is more relevant than a generic file date, but metadata can be missing or rewritten. - Check the device or photo library. Photos and gallery apps may show their interpretation of the image date, device and location. Libraries can also let a user adjust the date.
- Compare filesystem times. Created, birth, Modified and Accessed values describe events affecting the file on a particular volume. They can change after copying, downloading, exporting or editing.
- Cross-check independent evidence. Confidence is strongest when filename, visible content, embedded metadata and an unbroken source trail agree. If they do not, document the disagreement.
What the different dates actually mean

Windows: check Properties and image metadata
File Explorer method
- Make a copy of the image and leave the original untouched.
- In File Explorer, right-click the copy and choose Properties.
- Open the Details tab. Review dimensions, any date fields and available camera or image information.
- Compare those values with the General tab’s Created and Modified times. Record the full date, time, time zone if shown, and file path.
Windows image properties can expose EXIF and XMP fields, and the Windows Imaging Component (WIC) supports EXIF, XMP and PNG textual metadata. The DateTaken field is defined as the date the image was taken. If it is blank, do not infer a date. Microsoft documents January 1, 1601 as the default for an unset value in the relevant API; that value means “not set,” not that the screenshot was captured in 1601.
When Windows shows no useful date
- A newly rendered PNG screenshot may contain no camera EXIF at all.
- Copying the file from a phone, cloud drive or chat application can reset Created time.
- An editor may preserve pixels while rewriting or removing metadata.
- Different Windows views can display local-time conversions; retain the original time-zone context where available.
Use visible UI clues and the source trail to narrow the time window. Do not substitute the Modified value merely because it is populated.
iPhone and iPad: use Photos Info, then verify the file
- Open Photos and select the screenshot.
- Swipe up on the image or tap the Info button.
- Review the displayed date and time, filename, device information, camera metadata and location fields that are available.
- If the date matters, preserve the original file separately before editing, exporting or sharing it.
Apple documents that Photos can show the date and time a photo or video was taken and also allows the date and time to be adjusted. Therefore, the value in the library is evidence of the library’s current record, not an immutable log. A screenshot created on the iPhone is normally a new image; it should not be expected to retain the EXIF from an underlying camera photo that happened to be on screen.

Android: treat Gallery and Photos dates as app-specific
Open the image in the device’s Gallery or Google Photos app and look for Info, Details or an equivalent menu. The exact fields vary by manufacturer and application. Record the filename, displayed date, dimensions and any location or device data, then compare them with the file’s filesystem dates and visible content.
Android screenshot files are commonly newly rendered PNG or JPEG images without the original photograph’s EXIF. The U.S. Department of Defense Identity and Privacy Owner’s Guide states that taking a screenshot of a photo on iOS or Android creates a new image containing no EXIF data. This describes common behavior, not a guarantee for every vendor build, so inspect the actual file rather than assuming either presence or absence of metadata.
macOS: Finder dates plus metadata and visible clues
- In Finder, select the screenshot and press Command-I to open Get Info.
- Record Created and Modified values, file size, dimensions and the original path.
- Inspect available image metadata in Preview or another metadata-aware application.
- Compare the filename and Finder dates with clocks, notifications and other content visible in the screenshot.
Finder’s creation date can indicate when the file was saved to that Mac or copied onto that volume. Renaming, transfer and editing can make it diverge from capture time, so use it as corroboration rather than a default answer.
Do screenshots have EXIF data?
Often they do not. EXIF is primarily camera and image metadata; a screenshot tool usually renders a new bitmap and may write only dimensions, color information or a software tag. A screenshot of a camera photo is another generation of image and commonly loses the photo’s original EXIF. Some capture or export tools may add their own fields, and PNG files can carry textual metadata instead of EXIF.

Absence of EXIF does not prove that an image is fake or that its date is unknowable. It means that this particular evidence channel is unavailable. Use the filename, visible interface, source history and filesystem events, and state the limits of each.
How to establish a defensible time window
Use independent clues
List each observation separately: for example, a filename indicating 14:32, a status-bar clock showing 14:31, a message dated Tuesday and a file copied to a drive at 14:40. Explain which observations are generated automatically, which are editable and which come from an independent source.
Preserve provenance
Keep the original bytes, original name, acquisition method and every transfer. For a workplace, security or legal dispute, compute a cryptographic hash of the original, maintain a transfer log and avoid opening the only copy in software that may rewrite it. A qualified digital-forensics examiner can assess authenticity and a timeline when the consequences justify that level of care.
Report uncertainty accurately
Say “the file was present on this computer by 14:40 and the visible clock shows about 14:31” rather than “it was captured at 14:31” unless a trustworthy capture record supports that precision. If metadata conflicts with the filename or visible content, preserve both values and explain the conflict.

Troubleshooting: why the date looks wrong
The Created date is later than the screenshot
The file was probably copied, downloaded, exported or restored later. Look for an embedded capture field and the original device or service record.
The Modified date is earlier than the date in the filename
The filename may have been generated from a planned capture time, or the file may have been copied while retaining an older modification time. Check visible content and metadata rather than choosing one value automatically.
Photos shows a date you know is wrong
The library date may have been adjusted manually or inferred during import. Export or preserve the original file, then compare its metadata and source history.
Windows shows January 1, 1601
Treat it as an unset DateTaken default documented by Microsoft, not as a historical capture date.

All metadata disappeared after sending the image
Messaging, social and cloud services often recompress or regenerate images. Ask for the original attachment, not a downloaded preview, and preserve it before further sharing.
Two copies have different times
Compare hashes and byte content first. If the files differ, one may have been edited or re-encoded. If the bytes match, the differing filesystem dates reflect separate filesystem events.

Cost, reliability and evidence notes for new captures
- Record the target URL, request parameters, UTC request time and returned verdict headers alongside each file.
- Use an explicit wait condition or network-idle wait for pages whose content appears after JavaScript execution.
- Use a cache TTL deliberately: caching can improve repeatability and speed, but a cached response represents the cached page state.
- For disputes, retain the original API response and hash it; a later recapture is not proof of what the page showed earlier.
- Use PDF output when pagination and printed layout matter, and image output when pixel-level page evidence is the requirement.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a screenshot prove the exact second it was captured?
Usually not by itself. Exact timing requires a trustworthy capture log or a well-preserved source record that agrees with the image’s metadata and visible content.
Is a screenshot’s filename enough evidence?
No. Automatically generated names are useful clues, but filenames can be renamed and may represent save time rather than capture time.
