The reliable way to authenticate an Azumanga Daioh figure is to identify the exact character and version, match it to a manufacturer record, then check the seller, packaging, copyright markings and physical workmanship together. No single sticker, price, photograph or paint flaw proves that a figure is genuine. Kotobukiya’s official Azumanga Daioh catalog confirms swimsuit-version figures for Osaka, Sakaki and Kagura; use those records as the starting point and treat the physical item as a separate verification exercise.
The process below works for a figure you are considering online and for one already in your collection. It also explains what to photograph when asking the manufacturer for help, why missing stickers are inconclusive, and how to handle an item that appears suspicious.
Begin with the exact product identity

If a listing calls a figure an “Osaka swimsuit” but the box has no identifiable manufacturer, product title or matching catalog entry, stop treating the seller’s wording as proof. The name may describe a fan-made item, an unlicensed copy or a different release. Identity comes before condition, price or stickers.
Read the official catalog with its limitations in mind
Kotobukiya’s portal is an identity reference, not a guarantee that every current listing is new or still manufactured. The portal states that some displayed products are no longer in production. A discontinued figure can therefore be authentic while appearing only through resale channels, and its current asking price can change with availability.
The same portal notes that displayed photographs are prototypes. Prototype images establish the intended character, costume, pose and general design, but they do not guarantee that every production paint boundary, color tone, seam or accessory will look identical. Use the images to establish what product a seller claims to have, then evaluate production details as supporting evidence rather than demanding pixel-for-pixel equality.

Screen an online listing before you buy
Counterfeit figures have been reported on internet auctions, online shopping sites, flea-market applications and stores outside official retail channels. A marketplace listing is not automatically fake, but it requires more verification than a purchase from an authorized source. Ask the seller for current, in-hand photographs instead of relying only on manufacturer stock images.
- Request all sides of the box. Ask for the front, back, left and right sides, top and bottom when possible. Cropped images can hide missing logos, altered text or a mismatched product label.
- Request the complete figure. The photo should show the head, body, accessories, support parts and base together. A close-up of only the face cannot establish that the figure belongs to the claimed release.

- Check whether photos are current. Reflections, a handwritten date or a view of the actual surrounding packaging can help distinguish an in-hand photograph from a copied product image. - Review seller history and terms. Look for consistent descriptions, clear condition grading, a stated return process and records of completed sales. A long account history does not authenticate one item, while a new account does not prove it is fraudulent; these details set the level of scrutiny.
Preserve the listing URL, screenshots, seller messages, photographs and payment record. If the item later proves misdescribed, those records are more useful than a memory of what the page looked like.

Inspect an item you already have: an evidence-first procedure
Handle the figure carefully and document it before attempting to clean, repaint, reassemble or modify anything. Alterations can remove evidence and may affect a return or manufacturer assessment.
- Record the claimed identity. Photograph the box label and write down the character, version, manufacturer and product number exactly as printed.
- Photograph the unopened or opened package. Capture the front, rear, sides, top and bottom, including barcodes, warnings, logos and small print. Use even light and keep the camera square to the panel.
- Photograph every figure component. Show the figure, base, supports, interchangeable parts and accessories in one frame, then take close-ups of areas that look unusual.
- Capture the copyright marking. Focus on the copyright text on the base or side. Take several images if the lettering is recessed, glossy or partly hidden.

Back and side panels
Use the rear and side panels to compare product photography, accessory diagrams, safety text, company information and copyright wording. Counterfeit packaging often reproduces the overall layout but introduces blurred type, uneven color registration, misspellings or inconsistent fonts. These are warning signs for further checking, not conclusive laboratory tests.
Barcodes, labels and seals
A barcode or factory seal can support an identification, but a copied code or replacement seal can appear on an unauthorized package. Face and eyes
Facial printing is a useful comparison area because eyes, eyebrows and mouth are visible in official product images. Check alignment, line sharpness, expression and placement rather than judging only whether the face looks attractive. A slightly different result may come from photography or a production revision; repeated misalignment or visibly crude printing is more concerning.

Examine hair joins, arms, legs, swimsuit edges, accessories and the connection to the base. Large gaps, soft or distorted details, unexplained mold lines and parts that do not seat correctly are consistent with the quality problems manufacturers warn about in counterfeit products. They can also result from shipping damage or heat exposure, so photograph the condition before drawing a conclusion.
Fit and stability
Check whether the figure stands as designed, whether supports enter their sockets cleanly and whether accessories belong to the claimed version. Do not force a peg into a hole or bend a part to test it. A poor fit is useful evidence when it occurs alongside incorrect colors, packaging errors or an implausible copyright mark.

Compare two listings across the same evidence axes
When choosing between listings, compare them side by side rather than selecting the one with the lowest price or the sharpest promotional image.

- Organize a concise case. Include where and when you bought the figure, the seller or store, the listing description, product identity and any return deadline.
