A slow phone, hot battery, or unexpected pop-up does not prove your smartphone was hacked. Treat these as leads, then check for concrete device, account, and security-setting changes. Android and iPhone provide official checks; use those before deleting data or resetting the device. An Apple threat notification is a separate, high-risk situation that requires direct verification and expert help.
What can indicate a hacked phone?
Google describes several symptoms that might indicate malware, but none proves a compromise by itself. Look for a pattern of unexplained changes, especially when several appear together:
- Persistent pop-up ads or redirects, including when you are not browsing.
- Unusual slowness, freezing, crashes, or apps behaving differently.
- Available storage dropping without a clear reason.
- Browser settings, search results, or the home page changing unexpectedly.
- Messages sent to your contacts that you did not write.
- Apps, permissions, or device settings changing without your approval.
Battery drain alone is weak evidence. Apple notes that unauthorized iOS modification can shorten battery life, but ordinary battery aging, poor signal, demanding apps, high brightness, and background activity are much more common explanations.
Check the phone and the account separately
A phone can look normal while someone is using a connected account. Conversely, a malfunctioning phone may have no account compromise. Check both levels.

| Check | What to look for | What it can establish |
|---|---|---|
| Device behavior | Pop-ups, unexplained apps, browser changes, messages you did not send, persistent malfunction | Possible malware or unwanted software; symptoms are not proof |
| Account activity | Unfamiliar sign-ins, devices, recovery details, security-setting changes, or financial activity | Someone may be using an account even if the phone shows no obvious symptom |
| Sharing and permissions | Unexpected people, apps, connected devices, or access to sensitive data | Potential unwanted access that you can review and revoke |
How to check an Android phone
1. Update Android and installed apps
Install available operating-system and security updates, then update apps through the legitimate app store. Updates commonly include critical security patches and protections.
2. Remove suspicious or unnecessary apps
Review the installed-app list. Uninstall apps you do not need, do not recognize, or did not obtain from a legitimate source. Be cautious with apps that request access unrelated to their purpose, such as a simple utility demanding broad accessibility, messaging, or device-administration control.

3. Review your Google Account
Open your Google Account security controls and inspect recent security activity, signed-in devices, recovery phone and email, and changes to important security settings. If another person may be signed in, change the account password promptly, then remove unfamiliar devices and confirm that recovery details are yours.
4. Escalate if symptoms continue
If pop-ups, redirects, unexplained messages, or other malware-like behavior remains after updates and app removal, Google says a device reset or help from the manufacturer may be necessary. Back up essential personal files first, but do not restore an unknown or suspicious app during setup.

How to check an iPhone
Use Safety Check on iOS 16 or later
- Open Settings.
- Tap Privacy & Security.
- Tap Safety Check.
- Use Manage Sharing & Access to review people and apps that can access information.
- Review devices connected to your Apple Account, app privacy permissions, passcode, and Apple Account password.
Screen Time restrictions or a mobile-device-management profile can limit some Safety Check options. If a work or school profile is present, ask the administrator before removing it.
Respond to an explicit malware alert
If iOS says a third-party app contains malware and cannot be opened, Apple’s instruction is to delete that app. Do not keep reopening it or install a replacement from an unsolicited link.

Check whether someone is using your accounts
Account evidence can be more decisive than a vague phone symptom. Review:
- Recent sign-ins and devices you do not recognize.
- Recovery phone numbers and email addresses.
- New forwarding rules, app connections, or security methods.
- Messages, posts, purchases, or financial transactions you did not authorize.
- Password or two-factor-authentication changes you did not make.
For a suspicious Google Account, change the password, verify recovery information, and remove unfamiliar signed-in devices. Repeat the same process for Apple, email, social-media, banking, and messaging accounts that may have been exposed. Use a clean, trusted device if you suspect the phone itself is actively compromised.

What to do immediately if something looks wrong
- Do not follow alarming pop-ups. Never install a profile, app, remote-access tool, or “security” update because an unsolicited message demands it.
- Protect accounts. Change the affected password, review recovery details, sign out unfamiliar devices, and enable multifactor authentication where available.
- Update the phone. Install official operating-system and app updates.
- Remove the cause. Uninstall suspicious Android apps; delete an iPhone app that iOS explicitly identifies as malware.
- Preserve evidence when appropriate. Photograph alerts and note dates, unfamiliar devices, messages, or transactions before resetting.
- Reset only when justified. If Android malware symptoms persist, follow Google or the manufacturer’s reset guidance. A reset is disruptive and will not repair an account whose password remains exposed.
Apple threat notifications need a different response
Apple threat notifications are intended for users Apple believes may be individually targeted by mercenary spyware. The alert can appear on the device and in the Apple Account. Verify it by signing in directly at account.apple.com, not through a link in a message.
Apple says its threat notifications never ask you to click links, open files, install apps or profiles, or provide an Apple Account password or verification code by email or phone. Follow Apple’s guidance for expert assistance; Apple identifies Access Now’s Digital Security Helpline as one possible source of help. Do not treat a generic pop-up or marketing message as an Apple threat notification.
Prevent future compromise
- Use a strong device passcode and keep the phone physically protected.
- Install operating-system and app updates promptly.
- Download apps only from trusted, official sources and review permissions.
- Back up important data regularly.
- Enable the platform’s lost-phone locating, locking, and erasing features.
- Review account devices and security activity periodically, not only after an incident.
When to seek professional help
Get specialist or manufacturer assistance when a verified platform alert appears, account takeover continues after password changes, financial activity is unauthorized, persistent malware symptoms survive app removal and updates, or the phone contains sensitive work, legal, medical, or investigative data. Avoid unsolicited “hack removal” callers and pop-ups that demand payment or remote access.
