You cannot confirm that eye drops are sterile by looking at them. Check the printed expiration date and the bottle’s storage and after-opening instructions; do not use the drops if they are past an applicable discard date, have been handled in a way that could contaminate the tip, or are covered by an FDA safety alert. Stop using them and contact a health professional if you develop eye pain, discharge, vision changes, or discomfort.
How can I tell if my eye drops are contaminated?
There is no reliable at-home visual test for sterility. The FDA says, “Any drug used in the eyes must be sterile to reduce the risk of infection.” A bottle’s clear appearance, lack of odor, or intact-looking packaging does not prove its contents are safe.
Check the bottle and packaging for damage or a broken seal, and think about how the dropper has been handled. If its tip touched your eye, fingers, clothing, or another surface, contamination is a concern. Wash your hands before using drops, avoid touching the tip to anything, and replace the cap as the label directs. If you are unsure whether a bottle is safe, do not rely on appearance; ask a pharmacist or eye-care professional about that specific product.

Can I use eye drops after they expire?
No. Do not use drops past the expiration date printed on the bottle or carton. The FDA explains that a drug’s expiration date is the period it is known to retain its strength, quality, and purity when stored according to its labeled conditions. Storage outside those conditions may affect the product; an unexpired date is not a reason to ignore storage instructions.

How long are eye drops good after opening?
There is no single after-opening period for all eye drops. Follow the directions for the exact product rather than applying a universal number of days.

What if my bottle may be part of a safety alert?
FDA eye-drop warnings can apply to specific products, brands, or lots, and alerts may change. Check the FDA’s eye-drop safety information and the linked notice for the exact product and lot before using a bottle you suspect is affected.
Past warnings illustrate why the exact notice matters; they are not a current, exhaustive recall list. On January 31, 2024, FDA warned against named South Moon copycat eye drops after sampled products were found contaminated with Burkholderia cepacia complex. On October 27, 2023, FDA warned about specified eye drops from several major brands after manufacturing inspections found insanitary conditions and positive bacterial environmental sampling. These alerts apply to the products identified in the notices, not automatically to every eye-drop product.

What should I do if drops cause symptoms?
Stop using the drops and contact a health-care professional if you experience eye discharge, pain, changes in vision, or discomfort. If you have signs of an eye infection, seek medical care promptly. FDA advises patients who used products named in its warnings and develop infection symptoms to contact a provider or seek care.

A suspected product-quality problem and a medical problem are separate concerns: FDA’s eye-drop guidance explains how to report quality concerns or adverse events through MedWatch, while symptoms need professional medical assessment.
How should I dispose of expired or recalled drops?
For a recalled product, follow the disposal or return instructions in the specific FDA alert. For other unused or expired medicine, FDA recommends using a take-back option when available. If one is not available, most medicines—including eye drops—can go in household trash unless they are on FDA’s flush list; follow the agency’s preparation instructions.
