There is no dependable look-or-smell test that can prove baby formula is safe. Check the Use By date, the product’s storage directions, how long prepared formula has been out or refrigerated, whether feeding has started, and how long a container has been open. Discard formula that has passed a limit even if it looks and smells normal.

Check these things before feeding formula

  • Use By date: Do not use formula past the date printed on the package. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) says manufacturers guarantee nutrient content and quality only through that date. See the FDA’s safe-handling guidance.
  • Time since preparation: Prepared formula has limits that depend on whether it has been refrigerated and whether the baby has started feeding.
  • Time since opening: Follow the label’s period for using an opened container; it is not the same as the package’s Use By date.
  • Changes or damage: FDA advises checking for changes in color, smell, or taste. An unusual product or damaged container is a reason to contact the manufacturer—not a reason to taste it to check.

These are U.S. CDC and FDA recommendations. The exact label instructions for a particular product take precedence where they are more specific.

How long can prepared formula sit out?

CDC guidance sets different clocks for prepared formula and for a bottle the baby has begun drinking from. The two-hour limit starts when formula is prepared; the one-hour limit starts when feeding begins. See the CDC’s formula-handling guidance.

Situation What to do
Prepared formula that has not been offered Use it within 2 hours of preparation. If it will not be used within that time, refrigerate it immediately and use it within 24 hours.
Feeding has begun Use the bottle within 1 hour from the start of feeding. Discard any formula remaining after the feeding.
Formula left after a feeding Throw it away; do not refrigerate it for another feed. Saliva from the baby can introduce bacteria.

As the FDA puts it: “After Feeding – Throw away any leftover formula because it now contains the baby’s saliva, which can cause bacteria to grow.” The refrigerated 24-hour period applies to prepared formula that has not been offered, not to leftovers from a feeding.

How long is powdered formula good after opening?

Check the package for its specific discard period and write down the opening date. CDC says most infant formulas should be used within 1 month of opening, but the product label may give different directions. Keep the lid tightly closed and store the powder in a cool, dry place; do not refrigerate it. The package’s Use By date and its after-opening period are separate limits—follow whichever applies first.

What changes might mean formula should not be used?

Unexpected changes in color, smell, or taste are warning signs. FDA recommends contacting the manufacturer if you have concerns about a product or notice a damaged container. Do not use a sensory check to override the date or safe-handling limits: formula can appear normal and still be outside its safe-use window.

What to do if you are unsure

  1. Check the Use By date and the product’s storage and after-opening directions.
  2. For prepared formula, work out how much time has passed since preparation; if feeding started, count from the start of feeding instead.
  3. If a time limit or date has passed, discard the formula rather than trying to judge safety by appearance or smell.
  4. If the package is damaged or the product seems unusual, do not feed it; contact the manufacturer for product-specific advice.
  5. If you need guidance specific to your baby, ask the baby’s healthcare provider. Powdered formula is not sterile, and extra precautions may matter in some circumstances.
