Do not rely on one “magic” test. Before paying, inspect the listing and seller, compare the card with a known genuine card, verify every printed detail against a reputable scan, and use a bright-light check as supporting evidence. A dramatic discount, poor photos, spelling errors, wrong symbols, incorrect set information, or a card that is unusually easy to see through should move the purchase into a verification or walk-away decision.
No single test proves authenticity. TCGplayer explicitly warns that no trick, test, or method is 100% conclusive, so combine independent checks and obtain specialist review for expensive or disputed cards.
What a fake Pokémon card usually gets wrong
Counterfeits commonly fail in several places at once: the blue card back, typography, wording, energy symbols, statistics, set identifiers, or foil treatment. One defect may be a printing variation, but multiple mismatches are a strong reason not to buy without further verification.

That makes a side-by-side comparison with an authentic card one of the most reliable first checks. The comparison must be with a card known to be genuine and from the same general language and product family; an altered, damaged, or different-language card is a poor reference.

Pre-purchase checklist
1. Evaluate the listing and seller first
- Request original photographs. Ask for clear, well-lit images of the exact card’s front and back, not only manufacturer stock art. Without the back, you lose one of the most useful comparisons.
- Check the seller’s transparency. Look for a specific description, consistent photos, a stated source, and a return or dispute process. A new account, bulk offer, unknown source, or refusal to provide additional images raises risk but does not by itself prove a counterfeit.
- Research the expected product. Compare the card’s normal market range, official product appearance, set release, and known printing differences. Expensive cards deserve more research because small edition details matter.
- Treat extreme discounts as a warning. Pokémon Support says packs priced dramatically below suggested retail are a near-certain warning sign and reports the highest number of counterfeit instances from flea markets. A low price can reflect damage or urgency, but the seller should be able to explain it and support the explanation with evidence.
2. Read every line on the card
Zoom the seller’s image or inspect the physical card under even light. Compare the wording, symbols, and layout with a reputable reference scan. Red flags include:
- misspellings, grammatical errors, or an incorrect or missing accent in “Pokémon”;
- attack names or descriptions that differ from the reference;
- wrong or malformed Energy symbols;
- implausible HP, damage, weakness, resistance, or retreat-cost values;
- fonts that are too heavy, too thin, incorrectly spaced, or inconsistent between sections;
- a set symbol or collector number that does not belong to the card;
- foil or holographic treatment that the reference card does not have, or missing foil where it should be present.
Do not judge typography from a compressed marketplace thumbnail. Ask for a higher-resolution image or inspect the card in person before drawing a conclusion.
3. Compare the back with a known genuine card
- Place the suspect card beside a genuine Pokémon card under the same light.
- Align the edges and compare the overall blue tone, border, central Poké Ball design, lettering, and fine details.
- Look for washed-out color, bleeding between the blue border and central artwork, blurred details, or a design that is slightly oversized or shifted.
- Repeat the comparison after rotating both cards so glare does not hide a mismatch.
TCGplayer describes this as its first and most reliable authentication check, while also noting that it requires an authentic comparison card. A back that looks different is a serious warning; a matching back does not certify the front or eliminate the possibility of a sophisticated counterfeit.
4. Match the card to a reputable scan
Use the official Pokémon Trading Card Database or another established card reference. Search for the exact card and compare, item by item:
- card name, number, and language;
- font family, weight, size, and spacing;
- HP and attack names, costs, damage, and text;
- Energy symbols and their placement;
- weakness, resistance, and retreat cost;
- set symbol and collector number;
- illustration, border, rarity marking, and whether the card is supposed to be foil.
Use the scan to identify the correct version rather than comparing a card to a different reprint. Some Pokémon cards have multiple printings with different symbols, numbering, or finishes.

5. Use the bright-light test as a screen
Pokémon Support says counterfeit cards are often easy to see through when held up to a bright light. Hold the card near (not against) a strong, diffuse light and compare it with a genuine card under the same conditions. If the suspect card transmits much more light, treat that as a major warning.
This is not a standalone proof. Lighting, camera exposure, card wear, and different card constructions can affect what you see, and a counterfeit may be made thick enough to pass. Never damage a valuable card by bending, wetting, cutting, or using heat to test it.

6. Inspect sealed products separately
Sealed packs and boxes require package-level checks in addition to card checks. Read all printed text and compare the package with an official image of the correct set. TCGplayer flags spelling or grammar errors, references to the wrong set, and anime imagery on products that should use original Pokémon Trading Card Game art. Be skeptical when sealed products are offered far below the official Pokémon Center price.
A sealed wrapper is not proof of authenticity: counterfeiters can reproduce wrappers or reseal genuine packaging. Examine logos, image quality, crimping, and product naming, then consider the seller’s source and price together.
Red flags at a glance
| What you observe | Why it matters | What to do before paying |
|---|---|---|
| Only stock images or no back photo | You cannot perform the most useful visual comparison. | Request original front-and-back photos; walk away if the seller refuses. |
| Price dramatically below suggested retail | Pokémon Support identifies this pattern as a common counterfeit warning. | Ask for a documented source and compare other offers; do not let the discount rush you. |
| Washed-out or bleeding card back | Color and fine-detail differences often reveal poor reproduction. | Compare beside a known genuine card under identical light. |
| Spelling, grammar, or accent errors | Counterfeit artwork frequently reproduces text incorrectly. | Match every line against a reputable scan. |
| Wrong font, Energy symbol, HP, attack, or set number | These are fixed data points for a specific printing. | Verify the exact set and printing; treat mismatches as high risk. |
| Unexpected or missing foil | Foil treatment is part of a card’s intended version. | Compare with the reference image and another card from the same set. |
| Card is unusually easy to see through | Pokémon Support says this is common with counterfeits. | Use the light test as supporting evidence, then seek expert review. |
| Package names the wrong set or uses inappropriate imagery | Incorrect packaging copy is a counterfeit indicator. | Do not open or pay until the package matches an official reference. |
How to check a card when you are buying online
- Save the listing. Keep the URL, photos, description, seller name, messages, and stated condition. This evidence is useful if a dispute becomes necessary.
- Ask focused questions. Request a straight-on front, a straight-on back, and a close-up of the set symbol and collector number. Ask whether the seller will accept a return if an established specialist identifies a counterfeit.
- Verify the exact version. Search the card in the official database and confirm the set, number, language, rarity, and foil pattern.
- Compare the back image. Check blue color, border, central design, and detail against a known authentic card or a high-quality reference image.
- Review all text and symbols. Enlarge the image and compare HP, attacks, Energy costs, weakness, resistance, retreat, and typography.
- Compare price and source. A price far below comparable listings needs a credible explanation. “Found in a lot” is not authentication.
- Choose a protected payment route. Prefer a marketplace with a documented counterfeit-claim process and retain proof of delivery and payment. Avoid irreversible payment methods when the seller or card cannot be verified.
How to weigh conflicting signs
Not every unusual detail has the same significance. A slightly different color in a photograph may be caused by lighting or camera processing, while a wrong collector number is a direct conflict with the card’s documented identity. Start with objective data: set, number, language, attack text, symbols, and foil specification. Then use physical clues such as color, alignment, and light transmission to support or challenge that identification.

Keep the reference card and the suspect card in the same frame whenever possible. Identical lighting, angle, and distance make a comparison more useful than two photographs taken under different conditions. Rotate both cards to check whether glare is creating a false difference, and do not mistake edge whitening or ordinary wear for evidence of a counterfeit.
Recommended Free Tools
If one check is inconclusive, perform another independent check rather than forcing a yes-or-no answer. For example, a back that appears correct but a collector number that belongs to another set should lead to a pause and expert review. Conversely, a low-resolution image that makes the font look soft is not enough to reject an otherwise well-documented listing.
Buying-route trade-offs
There is no route that removes all risk. Compare the protections that exist before you commit.
| Buying route | Authenticity controls | Evidence you can inspect | Recourse considerations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Established marketplace with documented safeguards | May offer an authentication center or buyer safeguard for eligible orders. | Exact-card photos, seller history, price history, and written listing details. | Follow the platform’s counterfeit procedure and deadline; keep the item and packaging. |
| Local specialist card shop | Staff can examine the card in person and compare it with inventory or references. | Physical print, alignment, color, and foil under controlled lighting. | Ask whether the shop provides a written opinion or return policy before purchase. |
| Flea market, informal cash sale, or unknown source | Usually no independent authentication. | Often limited photos, receipts, or seller history. | Assume limited recovery options; do not let scarcity or pressure replace verification. |
| Graded card from an established seller | Third-party grading and a certification number can add an independent check. | Holder, label, certification lookup, and seller reputation. | Verify the certification and use reputable sellers or authorized dealers; a holder is not a substitute for checking that the item and label correspond. |
Price is only one comparison axis. A lower asking price may come with no photographs, no return process, and no practical way to recover money. A higher-priced listing may include clearer provenance or a documented buyer safeguard. Compare authenticity controls, seller transparency, buyer protection, and the time allowed to file a claim, not just the number on the tag.
Using a loupe and other tools
A 10x LED jeweler’s loupe can make tiny print, Energy symbols, and border details easier to compare. Use it to see differences, not to “certify” a card. Magnification cannot tell you whether the entire card was printed from an accurate counterfeit file.

Use a bright, neutral light, keep the reference card beside the suspect card, and photograph both under the same conditions. Avoid scraping, bending, tearing, solvent, or destructive tests. Those actions can reduce the value of a genuine card and still produce an uncertain result.
What to do if you suspect a counterfeit
Before you complete the purchase
- Pause the transaction and do not send additional payment.
- Save the listing, seller messages, photos, and any statements about authenticity or provenance.
- Ask a specialist card shop for an in-person opinion, as Pokémon Support recommends.
- If the seller cannot provide clear images or a plausible explanation for discrepancies, choose another card.
After you have received the card
- Stop handling it unnecessarily and preserve the card, wrapper, box, invoice, shipping materials, and payment record.
- Photograph the front, back, edges, packaging, and any mismatch with the reference scan.
- Contact the marketplace through its official counterfeit-claim channel rather than negotiating only in private messages.
- Follow the required return or inspection instructions exactly. Do not destroy or alter the card while a claim is open.
For TCGplayer orders, suspected counterfeits are sent to its Authentication Center and must be received there for refund eligibility. Its refund policy says a counterfeit claim must be reported within 30 calendar days of the estimated delivery date. Check the current policy when filing because platform procedures can change.
For expensive graded cards
Verify the grading company’s certification number through its official lookup and compare the returned details with the card, label, and holder. PSA describes a unique six-digit alphanumeric certification number and recommends established third-party authentication and reputable sellers or authorized dealers. A valid-looking number should still be checked against the physical item; copied labels and mismatched holders are reasons to stop and seek specialist help.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Why no single test is conclusive
TCGplayer states that “no trick, test, or method for identifying counterfeit Pokémon cards is 100% conclusive.” Genuine cards can have minor printing inconsistencies, and a sophisticated counterfeit may pass one check. The practical goal before purchase is risk reduction: require agreement among the seller evidence, card-back comparison, text and layout, reference scan, light behavior, and price.
There is also no authoritative market-wide counterfeit-rate statistic establishing what percentage of cards in circulation are fake. TCGplayer cites a 2021 Chinese customs seizure of more than 7.6 tons of counterfeit Pokémon cards, but that is one seizure and does not measure the proportion of cards in the market.

A simple decision rule
- Buy with ordinary caution: exact-card photos are available, the seller is transparent, the price is plausible, the back and all printed details match, and the light test is consistent with a genuine reference.
- Pause and obtain expert review: one significant mismatch exists, the card is expensive, the printing is unfamiliar, or the photos are too poor to verify.
- Walk away: the seller refuses a back photo, the price is dramatically below market without proof, several text or layout errors appear, or the card clearly fails the back or light comparison.
The safest pre-purchase habit is simple: compare several independent details before money changes hands, and treat uncertainty as a reason to delay rather than a reason to hope.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I tell if a Pokémon card is fake from a listing photo alone?
Sometimes a clear front-and-back photo reveals obvious errors, but a photo cannot replace a physical comparison. Ask for original, high-resolution images of the exact card, then verify the back, text, symbols, set number, and foil against a reputable reference. If the back is missing or the image is too compressed, treat the listing as unverified.
Is the bright-light test enough to prove a card is fake?
No. Pokémon Support says counterfeits are often easy to see through under bright light, so unusual transparency is an important warning. Compare the suspect card with a genuine card under identical lighting and combine the result with other checks. Lighting, wear, and card construction can affect the result.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
What should I do if the card has one printing difference?
First confirm that you are comparing the same set, language, reprint, and foil version. A single minor variation may be a legitimate printing inconsistency or a photographic artifact. A wrong collector number, incorrect attack text, or several mismatches is more serious and warrants specialist review before purchase.
Are sealed Pokémon packs automatically safe?
No. Counterfeiters can reproduce wrappers or reseal genuine packaging. Compare package text, logos, artwork, set name, and product appearance with an official reference. Spelling errors, the wrong set, inappropriate anime imagery, or a price far below the official Pokémon Center price are warning signs.
Where can I get a second opinion?
A specialist trading-card shop can inspect the physical card and compare it with known inventory or references, which Pokémon Support recommends when you are uncertain. For valuable graded cards, verify the certification through the grading company’s official lookup and use reputable sellers or authorized dealers.
What is the deadline for a TCGplayer counterfeit claim?
TCGplayer says suspected counterfeits must be sent to its Authentication Center for refund eligibility, and its refund policy says to report a counterfeit claim within 30 calendar days of the estimated delivery date. Preserve the card, packaging, listing, and payment evidence, and check the current policy when filing.
The Bottom Line
Before buying, require clear exact-card photos, compare the back with a known genuine card, verify every printed detail against the correct database entry, and use the light test only as supporting evidence. When the price, seller, packaging, or card details do not add up, pause and seek specialist help instead of hoping the card is authentic.
