Check the exact product’s recent price history, compare its total checkout cost with other sellers, and verify the conditions before treating a festive discount as a bargain. A percentage-off badge or crossed-out “was” price is only useful if that reference price is genuine; the rules for proving it vary by country.
How do I check whether a festive sale discount is genuine?
Start by making sure you are comparing the same item, then record the offer and check its price history. Follow these steps before you buy:
- Match the exact product. Check the model number, size, colour and condition. Compare bundle contents, warranty and seller too: a similar-looking item or a different package may not be a like-for-like deal.
- Save the offer details. Capture the product page and checkout total, including the seller, date, delivery charge, taxes, return terms and any membership or coupon conditions. The checkout amount can differ from the headline price.
- Check recent price history. Look for the lowest genuine selling price before the promotion, not just the price printed beside the sale badge. In the EU, a reduction generally has to be based on the lowest price applied during the previous 30 days. The European Commission states: “Discounts must be based on the lowest price applied in the past 30 days.”
- Look for a price increase just before the sale. A seller may raise a price shortly before a promotion, then mark it down to its former level or only slightly below it. The European Commission’s enforcement material documents both overstated reference prices and increases presented as discounts.
- Compare independent offers. Check at least one other retailer and the manufacturer’s official website. European Consumer Centre guidance recommends these comparisons and notes that price-history websites and browser extensions can help identify false discounts.
- Check the conditions and final cost. Confirm whether you need a membership, code, minimum basket, particular payment method or specified quantity. Include unavoidable delivery, handling, taxes and other mandatory fees in your comparison.
Keep the saved details with your price-history check. They make it easier to distinguish a change in the headline price from a meaningful saving on the exact offer you can actually buy.

For EU price-reduction announcements, the relevant reference is generally the lowest price the seller applied during the previous 30 days—not an arbitrary higher price chosen to make the reduction look larger. A price-history chart can help you see whether the sale price is genuinely lower than recent selling prices.

That period is not the same as asking whether today’s offer is the lowest price the product has ever had. An offer may be a genuine reduction under the relevant reference-price rule without being an all-time low. If your question is whether it is a good time to buy, a longer price history can add useful context, but the applicable legal reference period depends on your location.
What do enforcement figures say about festive discounts?
Consumer-protection sweeps have found misleading discount practices among online sellers. The figures are warnings about the scale of the problem, not evidence that any particular offer is false.

These findings make checking the individual offer worthwhile. They do not establish that every festive promotion—or every retailer in a sweep—is misleading.

Compare the offers on the same product configuration and on what you will actually pay and receive. A larger advertised discount can still be the weaker offer if its delivered cost is higher or its terms are less useful.

Do sale-price rules differ by country?
Yes. The EU’s 30-day reference-price principle is not a universal legal test. Check the consumer-protection rules for the country where you are shopping before assuming that a seller’s wording or reference price is lawful.
Authorities in other places describe related but distinct standards. Singapore’s Competition and Consumer Commission says suppliers should ensure discount or price-benefit comparisons are genuine and have a valid basis. Canada’s Competition Bureau says businesses cannot invent a higher regular price to make a sale look like a bargain. New Zealand warns that terms such as “usual,” “was,” “normal” and “everyday” may mislead when the reference price is not genuine.

Should a countdown or “almost gone” message affect my decision?
Treat urgency and scarcity messages as prompts to verify the offer, not as evidence that it is a bargain. The 2026 EU sweep found examples of fake scarcity, and earlier sweeps documented widespread non-compliance during Black Friday sales.
If the price history, final cost or offer conditions are unclear, pause long enough to check them. If you believe a promotion misrepresents its reference price, consult the consumer-protection authority in your jurisdiction about reporting options or remedies.

How we assessed a genuine sale
The useful test is not whether a promotion looks festive or displays a large percentage. It is whether the exact item is being offered at a verifiable reduction, on terms you can meet, for a total cost that compares well with other available offers. Price history, independent comparisons and the checkout total answer different parts of that question, so use them together.

No. A genuine reduction can use the reference period required by local rules without being the lowest price the product has ever reached. Whether it is the right time for you to buy is a separate value judgment.
