The dependable way to identify an official SNES reissue is to combine several checks: match the cartridge to the correct region and release, inspect the label and shell, then examine the circuit board when the cartridge’s value justifies opening it. A seal, label, screw, weight, or console fit can support an identification, but none proves authenticity alone. The internal PCB and chip layout, compared with a documented original for the same title and region, provide the strongest practical evidence.
This method separates a Nintendo-made or Nintendo-licensed cartridge from an unlicensed fan-made reproduction without relying on one easily copied detail.
What “official” and “fan-made” mean on SNES cartridges
An official cartridge is one produced by Nintendo or made under a Nintendo license for a particular title, region, and release. A fan-made cartridge, often called a reproduction or repro, is assembled outside that licensed production system. It may copy the original artwork and shell, use a donor cartridge, or install the game on a replacement board.
“Official” does not mean that every authentic cartridge is visually identical. Nintendo and licensed publishers produced different board revisions, shells, labels, and component batches over time. Regional editions also differ. The correct comparison is therefore not “Does this look like any SNES cartridge?” but “Does this complete cartridge match a known original for this title, region, and release variant?”

The evidence hierarchy: what deserves the most trust
Use the checks in this order when you need a practical confidence judgment:
- PCB and chip layout: the board markings, code, components, construction, and soldering should match a documented original for the same title and region.
- Region and release match: the reference cartridge must be the same North American SNES, European PAL, or Japanese Super Famicom variant, and ideally the same known revision.
- Shell and label construction: molding marks, logo form, label dimensions, alignment, finish, colors, and print quality should be consistent with originals.
- Seal and licensing language: an expected Nintendo seal or historical licensing wording supports legitimacy, but copied artwork can reproduce it.
- Screw, weight, and console fit: these are useful screening clues, not authentication by themselves.
A copied exterior can conceal an unlicensed board, and an authentic cartridge can differ from a single reference photograph because of a legitimate revision. Treat each observation as evidence that becomes meaningful when it agrees with the others.
Step 1: identify the claimed region and release
Before examining details, write down exactly what the seller says the cartridge is. The three broad SNES families most often encountered are:

Do not use a North American photograph to reject a Japanese cartridge, or a Japanese board to approve a PAL one. Even within one region, a later board revision may replace an earlier design. Record the title, region, publisher, and any visible revision or board code before comparing photographs.
Build a region-matched reference set
Use more than one known original when possible. A single photograph may show an uncommon revision, a replacement label, or a perspective that hides a feature. Compare several examples of the same regional release and note which details remain consistent and which legitimately vary.
Step 2: inspect the front label
Hold the cartridge under even light and inspect the label without assuming that sharp artwork proves anything. Reproduction labels can be printed at high quality, while an authentic old label may show age, minor wear, or production variation.

Check dimensions and placement
- Compare the label’s overall dimensions with a region-matched original.
- Check that the artwork is centered and aligned with the shell’s edges.
- Look at the position of logos, rating marks, title text, and any Nintendo licensing language.
- Examine whether the label sits squarely or appears cut and applied by hand.
Check print quality and finish
Colors should be plausible for the era and release, with sharp type and clean registration. Compare the surface finish: a matte or otherwise era-appropriate finish may be expected for a particular release, while an unusually glossy modern print can be a warning. Do not reject a cartridge because its label is faded or scuffed; condition and authenticity are separate questions. Instead, look for combinations such as incorrect colors, soft lettering, cropped artwork, and misaligned borders.
Read the seal as supporting evidence
Nintendo’s legacy guidance identifies wording such as “Licensed by (the Trademark of) Nintendo …” and the gold Original Nintendo Seal of Quality as marks used on original or licensed accessories. Nintendo also states: “The official seal is your assurance that this product is licensed by Nintendo.” A reproduction can copy that wording and artwork, so the seal supports a conclusion only when the label, shell, and internal board agree with it.
Step 3: inspect the rear shell and molding
Turn the cartridge over and compare it with a known original from the same region. Examine the plastic and the label together rather than judging either one in isolation.
- Nintendo molding marks: look for the expected molded logos, lettering, and symbols in the correct positions.
- Logo form: compare the shape, spacing, and depth of molded Nintendo marks.
- Rear label: check its placement, proportions, print quality, and whether it belongs with the claimed release.
- Screw-hole geometry: compare the location and shape of the holes, including the surrounding plastic.
- Plastic appearance: color, texture, seams, and molding quality should be consistent with period examples.
A replacement shell can carry an authentic board, and an original shell can be fitted with a reproduction board. Rear-shell evidence is therefore a screening layer, not a final verdict.
Use weight and console fit carefully
Weight and the way the cartridge seats in a console can reveal an obviously different shell or missing internal parts. They cannot establish authenticity on their own. Different board revisions, shell materials, labels, and wear can change how an authentic cartridge feels, and a well-made reproduction can be dimensionally close to the original.

Step 4: check the security screw
Many Nintendo-era cartridges use a 3.8 mm game-bit security screw. A matching driver allows you to remove the shell for an internal inspection. The screw itself is not proof: shells and screws can be swapped, and a reproduction can use a period-looking screw.

Prepare a 3.8 mm game-bit inspection
- Ask the seller whether opening the cartridge is permitted and whether it affects a return or authenticity guarantee.
- Work on a clean, dry surface with a container for the screw.
- Use a correctly fitting 3.8 mm game-bit driver; do not force a slipping bit into the screw.
- Photograph the cartridge front, back, screw, and seam before opening it.
- Remove the screw carefully and separate the shell without levering against the PCB.
- Photograph both sides of the board before touching, cleaning, or removing anything.
Opening a collectible can affect its condition. For a low-value cartridge, exterior screening may be sufficient. For an expensive cartridge, the value of internal evidence usually outweighs the small handling risk, provided the seller or owner agrees.
Step 5: inspect the PCB and chips
The PCB is the most decisive physical evidence because it is harder to fake convincingly than a label. Compare both sides of the board with documented originals of the same title and region.

Understand the black-epoxy warning
Black epoxy covering a chip is a common reproduction sign because inexpensive replacement boards often use chip-on-board parts hidden beneath a blob of resin. It is a warning, not an automatic conviction. An unusual board should be compared with multiple reliable examples for the exact title and region before you decide.

Look for title-appropriate board codes
Board codes and component arrangements should make sense for the game’s hardware requirements. A board that is known to belong to another title, or that lacks the circuitry expected for the claimed release, is strong evidence against authenticity. Conversely, a different-looking board may be a legitimate revision. Verify the complete layout rather than rejecting one changed component.
Interpret soldering and wires
Factory soldering is generally neat and consistent. Bodge wires, lifted pads, or obvious rework can indicate repair, modification, or reproduction. They do not automatically mean the cartridge is fan-made: an authentic board may have been repaired. Record the modification separately from the authenticity judgment and ask whether the seller disclosed it.

- A seal that is present but printed with the wrong proportions or colors.
- Label alignment that is slightly off, especially when several other print defects appear.
- A shell whose logo, seams, or screw holes do not match the regional reference.
- Unusually light or heavy feel without an explanation from the board and shell inside.
- A security screw that looks new or differs from the reference.
- Black epoxy, generic silkscreening, handwritten labels, or implausible chip dates.
- A board layout that does not match the title, region, or known revision.
- Seller photographs that never show the rear shell or PCB for a high-value listing.
Any one item can have an innocent explanation. Several independent discrepancies that point in the same direction are much more significant.

Compare two candidate cartridges with a consistent checklist
When choosing between two listings, score the evidence rather than choosing the one with the prettier label. Record the following for each candidate:

For a high-value purchase, require clear internal photographs or inspect the cartridge in person before payment. If the seller refuses reasonable photographs, treat that refusal as purchase risk rather than as proof of a fake.

Ask for specific photographs
Request straight-on, well-lit images of the front label, rear shell, security screw area, and both sides of the PCB. Ask the seller not to crop out board edges, markings, or the shell seam. A photograph of only the label cannot establish what board is inside.
Check whether the seller’s description is precise
A reliable description identifies the region and says whether the cartridge has been opened, repaired, or modified. Vague claims such as “looks original” are weaker than a description supported by matching board photographs and a return policy.
Protect the return option
Keep the listing, photographs, messages, and stated condition until you have inspected the cartridge. If the cartridge arrives with a board, label, or shell that differs materially from the listing, document the discrepancy before making changes.

In-person inspection workflow
When you can examine the cartridge before paying, follow this order so that an early exterior impression does not bias the internal check:
- Confirm the region and title variant from the label and seller’s statement.
- Inspect front-label alignment, print quality, finish, and licensing marks.
- Inspect rear molding, logo form, label placement, plastic, and screw holes.
- Check that the cartridge fits the appropriate console slot without forcing it.
- Ask to open it with a 3.8 mm game-bit driver if the price warrants internal confirmation.
- Photograph both PCB sides and compare board code, layout, chips, and soldering with multiple references.
- Record any repair, replacement shell, or modification separately from the authenticity assessment.
- Pay only when the evidence and the seller’s return terms match the value at risk.
What to do when the evidence conflicts
Authentic-looking exterior, suspicious PCB
Give the PCB greater weight. A copied label and shell can make a reproduction look convincing, while an incompatible board layout, generic silkscreening, or unexplained chip construction points to an unlicensed cartridge. Pause the purchase and seek a second board reference for the same title and region.
Unusual PCB, otherwise plausible cartridge
Check for legitimate board revisions before rejecting it. Compare several known originals and verify the title-appropriate code, component positions, and regional variant. An isolated difference is not enough when the rest of the board matches.

Describe the item accurately as a cartridge with an original board and replaced or altered exterior if that is what the evidence shows. Authenticity of the electronics and originality of the collectible are separate attributes, and the distinction affects value.
No internal access
If the seller will not provide PCB photographs and you cannot inspect the cartridge, limit your offer to a price appropriate for an unverified item or choose a listing with better evidence. Do not convert missing information into confidence.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Trusting the seal alone: licensing artwork is easy to reproduce.
- Comparing the wrong region: a valid regional difference can look like a defect when the reference is mismatched.
- Rejecting every variation: multiple legitimate revisions exist.
- Authenticating by weight: shell and board differences make weight only a supporting clue.
- Assuming a new screw means a fake: screws can be replaced on authentic shells.
- Opening without permission: a shell inspection can affect a collectible’s condition or a return claim.
- Cleaning before photographing: wiping or scraping can remove useful evidence and damage labels.
- Using one photograph as a standard: perspective and lighting can hide important differences.
Care after inspection
Keep the PCB seated correctly in the shell, replace the screw without overtightening, and preserve the cartridge’s original labels and plastic. Store your photographs with the purchase record so that any later sale includes an accurate condition history. If you found a repair or modification, disclose it rather than presenting the cartridge as untouched.
The practical verdict
Start with the claimed region and release, screen the label and shell, and use a 3.8 mm game-bit screwdriver for an internal inspection when the price or rarity justifies it. The strongest conclusion comes from a PCB and chip layout that matches a documented original for the same title and region.
