To screenshot a page that requires login, render it in a real browser with valid authentication state already loaded, wait for the protected content to appear, and save the browser’s image response. Use a saved browser profile when the signed-in state can be reused; use Playwright when each run must perform a login or other page interactions. A screenshot API does not automatically bypass authentication—it must receive or establish the state the site expects.
Choose how to provide the signed-in state
Web apps may store authentication in cookies, localStorage, or IndexedDB. A browser-based screenshot workflow needs the relevant state, not merely a username and password. The right method depends on whether you can prepare a signed-in session in advance or need to run an interactive flow for every capture.
Use a saved profile for repeat captures
A managed browser service can save browser state after you sign in through an authorized session, then restore that state before rendering later requests. For example, Browserless’s screenshot API accepts a profile, and its profiles documentation describes storing cookies, localStorage, and IndexedDB. This avoids scripting the login in each screenshot request, but the saved state can expire or become invalid.
Browserless documents a POST request with the page URL and screenshot options in JSON; the token is supplied in the URL. Replace the host, token, and profile with values for your own deployment:

Confirm the correct endpoint and profile setup in the provider’s current documentation before using the example in production. The response body is image data, so the output option saves it as a file.
Use browser automation for login and page interactions
If authentication requires a scripted sequence, or the capture must click through the application, use Playwright to control a browser. Its screenshot documentation covers page captures. Browserless also documents browser connections and a caveat about reusing contexts with authenticated profiles in its Playwright connection guide; follow the connection method and installed library version supported by your provider.
- Start a browser or connect to the provider’s browser session.
- Load a supported saved state, or sign in using an authorized flow. Keep credentials and state outside source code.
- Navigate to the protected URL.
- Wait for a meaningful page-specific signal, such as a dashboard heading or a known element, rather than relying only on a fixed sleep.
- If needed, scroll through the page to trigger lazy-loaded content, then capture the viewport, full page, or relevant element.
- Inspect the output and confirm it shows the authenticated content rather than a redirect, access-denied page, or incomplete render.

A trustworthy readiness condition should check the application state you intend to capture—not just that navigation stopped.
Set capture scope and readiness deliberately
Browserless documents viewport and full-page screenshots, PNG/JPEG/WebP formats, quality, clipping, viewport size, device scale factor, and selector-based capture. Choose the smallest capture that answers your use case: a full-page screenshot can include content below the fold, but may be extremely tall and harder to review. A selector or clip region is often more useful for one panel or chart.
- Wait for application readiness: wait for the expected element or page state. A successful network response does not prove that client-rendered content is ready.
- Account for lazy loading: scroll relevant sections into view before capture if images or other content load only as the page is scrolled.
- Choose the output format: PNG is suitable when lossless detail matters; JPEG or WebP may reduce file size, depending on the endpoint’s supported options.
- Limit the area: use a selector or clipping rectangle to avoid capturing unrelated account information.
Consult the current endpoint documentation for exact option names and accepted values; these can vary by service version. Browserless’s REST API introduction also notes that ordinary REST requests do not persist browser state between responses. For recurring authenticated captures, use a supported profile/session mechanism or maintain and reconnect to an appropriate browser context instead of assuming one request’s cookies carry over to the next.

Verify the image, not just the HTTP response
A request can return an image successfully while the image itself shows a login redirect, CAPTCHA, access-denied screen, blank page, or partially rendered content. Check the screenshot or an application-specific readiness condition before treating the capture as valid. Where practical, make the workflow reject images that do not contain the expected state rather than reporting every 200 response as a successful capture.
If a provider reports automation blocking, use any mitigation only when it is permitted by the target site and consistent with your authorization. Browserless documents an /unblock endpoint for certain anti-bot cases, but it is not a guaranteed way around every challenge or restriction.
Protect authentication state and credentials
Only capture accounts and pages you are authorized to access. A browser token, cookies, localStorage, and IndexedDB can all expose an authenticated session. Browserless documents token-in-URL access and profiles containing browser state; the following safeguards are prudent because those values function like credentials:

- Store tokens and login material in a secret manager or protected runtime configuration, not source control.
- Restrict access to saved profiles and their state; avoid sharing profile exports unnecessarily.
- Prevent request logs, error reports, and screenshots from exposing tokens or sensitive account data.
- Revoke or rotate credentials if they are exposed, and refresh saved state when the application invalidates it.

The screenshot shows the login page
The profile may be expired, the state may not have been loaded before navigation, or the app may rely on a state store not included in the saved session. Re-authenticate and save a fresh profile; verify that the browser session contains the state the app needs, including localStorage or IndexedDB when applicable.

The screenshot is blank or access is denied
Inspect the returned image for a CAPTCHA, 403 page, or automation block. Confirm the URL is accessible in the authorized browser session and that the target site permits the capture. A nominally successful response does not establish that the intended page rendered.

Some images or page sections are missing
Content may load lazily or after client-side rendering. Wait for a page-specific selector, scroll relevant areas into view, and then capture. Use full-page capture only if content below the viewport is required.
The second request is no longer authenticated
Do not assume a REST screenshot request preserves browser state for the next call. Restore a supported profile for each request or use a maintained browser context as supported by the provider.
The capture is too large or difficult to inspect
Switch from full-page to viewport capture, or capture a specific selector or clip region. Set the viewport and device scale factor to match the review or testing requirement.

Can I use a plain HTTP client to screenshot an authenticated page?
No. A plain HTTP client can request page data, but it does not render the page as a browser does. A screenshot API or browser automation tool must render the page with valid browser state.
Does a saved profile keep a user logged in forever?
No. Sites can expire or revoke sessions, and authentication requirements can change. Treat a profile as reusable state that must be checked and refreshed when it stops working.
Which is better: a profile or scripted login?
A profile suits repeat captures when a valid signed-in state can be reused. Scripted browser automation is more flexible for multi-step or changing flows that must occur during each run.
