Set Playwright’s locale on a browser context, keep the viewport and other rendering conditions fixed, and capture the same page once for each language. Locale changes browser language preferences and formatting; it does not translate a site. For repeatable visual checks, use Playwright Test’s screenshot assertions and generate and compare baselines in the same environment.

What Playwright’s locale setting does—and does not do

Playwright’s locale is a browser-context setting. It affects navigator.language, the Accept-Language request header, and browser formatting such as dates and numbers. See the Playwright emulation guide and browser context API documentation.

It does not translate page text by itself. The site must support the language and select localized content, for example from the request’s language preference, a language route, a cookie, or an in-page language selector. If the application uses a route such as /de/, navigate to that localized route as well as setting the browser locale. Otherwise, a screenshot may show the default-language page with only browser-level preferences changed.

Use valid locale tags supported by the application, such as en-GB or de-DE. Locale and timezone are separate: set timezoneId only when the page displays timezone-dependent content. Browser timezone emulation does not change the test runner’s timezone; Playwright documents using the TZ environment variable if the runner itself needs a different timezone.

Capture the same page in several locales

The following Node.js example uses Playwright’s Chromium browser, creates a separate context for each locale, and saves a full-page PNG for each. Install Playwright and its browser first with npm install -D playwright and npx playwright install chromium. Save the script as capture-locales.js, then run it with node capture-locales.js.

const { chromium } = require('playwright');

(async () => {
  const browser = await chromium.launch();
  const locales = ['en-GB', 'de-DE'];

  try {
    for (const locale of locales) {
      const context = await browser.newContext({
        locale,
        viewport: { width: 1440, height: 900 },
      });
      const page = await context.newPage();

      await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle' });
      await page.screenshot({
        path: `screenshot-${locale}.png`,
        fullPage: true,
      });
      await context.close();
    }
  } finally {
    await browser.close();
  }
})();

Replace https://example.com with the page you control or are authorized to capture. If the site chooses language from its URL, use the appropriate localized URL in each iteration. If a page never reaches network idle because it keeps polling or streaming, wait for a page-specific selector or another stable condition instead of relying on that navigation option.

Keep the comparison controlled

  • Use the same URL state, viewport dimensions, browser project, and capture scope for each language unless one of those is deliberately under test.
  • Wait for localized content to appear before capturing. A selector that is present only after the application finishes changing language is more reliable than an arbitrary short delay.
  • Disable or wait out animations and avoid transient timestamps, rotating banners, and other changing content when they are not the subject of the comparison.
  • Test long translated strings and relevant viewport sizes when they matter to the product; choose these based on supported locales and product requirements, not a fixed Playwright-mandated matrix.

Choose the screenshot scope and output format

Playwright’s page.screenshot() can capture the visible viewport, a selected element, or the full scrollable page. The screenshot documentation covers these options, image formats, and scale: Playwright screenshots.

  • 【What You Get】Includes: HDMI Capture Card, USB 3.0 to USB-C Adapter, User Manual. Tips: Make sure your tablet’s OTG function is enabled before connecting. Test your HDMI device with a monitor first to confirm video and audio output, then connect to the Video Capture Card for recording.
  • Viewport: omit fullPage and capture the current visible area. Use this when the fold or above-the-fold layout is what matters.
  • One component: pass a locator’s screenshot() method, such as await page.locator('.pricing-card').screenshot({ path: 'card.png' });. This isolates a component rather than the entire page.
  • Full page: set fullPage: true to capture the full scrollable page. It cannot be combined with an element target.

PNG is useful for lossless visual review; JPEG and WebP are available when smaller raster files are preferable. The scale option controls whether output uses CSS pixels or device pixels. Choose the same format and scale across locale variants if you intend to compare their dimensions or pixels.

Use visual assertions for regression tests

For a one-off artifact, page.screenshot() is sufficient. For a test that checks whether localized rendering changes unexpectedly, use Playwright Test’s toHaveScreenshot(). The first run creates a reference image; later runs compare the rendered screenshot with that baseline. The assertion waits for two consecutive screenshots to match before using the last image for comparison. See Playwright visual comparisons and the screenshot snapshot documentation.

import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';

for (const locale of ['en-GB', 'de-DE']) {
  test(`home page renders consistently in ${locale}`, async ({ browser }) => {
    const context = await browser.newContext({
      locale,
      viewport: { width: 1440, height: 900 },
    });
    const page = await context.newPage();

    try {
      await page.goto('https://example.com');
      await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot(`home-${locale}.png`, {
        fullPage: true,
      });
    } finally {
      await context.close();
    }
  });
}

Run the test with npx playwright test. On the initial run, inspect and add generated reference images to version control. When the design or translation intentionally changes, review the differences before updating snapshots with npx playwright test --update-snapshots; do not accept an update merely to make a failing comparison pass.

Make baselines reproducible

Rendered output can vary with operating system, browser version, browser settings, hardware, power source, headless mode, and other environmental factors. Playwright recommends generating and comparing baselines in the same environment. Keep the browser and OS conditions consistent between baseline creation and comparison, and use snapshot names or projects that distinguish environments when you intentionally maintain more than one. A locale change should be the variable under test—not an accidental change in viewport, browser, or rendering setup.

Or skip the browser setup

If you need an API rather than a local Playwright script, ScreenshotNeo takes a screenshot from one GET request. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for available parameters. Example using cURL:

Troubleshooting

The screenshot is still in the default language

Setting locale only supplies browser language preferences; it does not force the application to translate. Confirm that the site supports the locale, use its language-specific route or selector if required, and wait until the localized content has rendered before capture.

The date or number format is unexpected

Check that the locale tag matches the intended regional variant, such as en-GB rather than a generic English tag. If the displayed value depends on local time, configure timezoneId on the context separately. This emulates the browser timezone, not the test runner timezone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The page hangs while waiting for navigation

Some pages maintain network connections or make ongoing requests, so networkidle may not be a useful readiness condition. Wait for a meaningful page selector or application state, then capture when the page is stable.

Visual tests fail without an obvious language change

Compare the baseline and test environments: OS, browser version, headless mode, viewport, device scale, and dynamic page content can alter pixels. Re-run in the same environment and inspect the diff. Update the baseline only after confirming the rendered change is intended.

Element capture fails or the output is unexpectedly large

Ensure the selector matches a visible element before calling its screenshot method. Use element capture for a component, viewport capture for the visible area, and full-page capture only when the entire scrollable layout is needed; full-page and element targeting are separate modes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Playwright’s locale setting translate website content?

No. It changes browser language preferences and formatting; the website must provide and select its localized content.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does setting a browser timezone also change Node.js or the test runner timezone?

No. Playwright’s timezone emulation applies to the browser. Use the runner’s timezone configuration separately if required.
