Use a browser to render the HTML, then capture the viewport, a specific element, or the full scrollable page with Playwright. For a reliable result, fix the viewport and capture settings, wait for the content that matters to finish rendering, and inspect the saved image. A file that appears self-contained may still rely on external images, fonts, scripts, or data.
Choose what the screenshot should include
Playwright can capture the visible viewport, the full scrollable document, or a single element. Pick the target before setting up the capture:
- Viewport: captures only what is currently visible in the browser window.
- Full page: captures the document’s scrollable content, not simply a taller version of the current viewport.
- Element: captures a particular component, such as a card or chart, using a locator.

Prepare a local HTML file for capture
Check the file’s dependencies
“Self-contained” describes an intended packaging, not proof that every browser dependency is embedded. Check the HTML for referenced images, stylesheets, fonts, scripts, and data. If any are external, the browser needs access to them in the capture environment. A page can also defer loading some content until it is scrolled or run application work after its initial load.

Use a stable viewport and environment
Choose a fixed viewport before navigating, and reuse it for captures you plan to compare. For visual baselines, keep the browser and operating-system environment consistent too. Playwright notes that rendering can vary with the host OS, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode; see its visual comparisons documentation.
Capture a full-page screenshot with Playwright
Install Playwright and its browser binaries for your chosen language, then save this as a Python script alongside page.html. It opens the local file by its absolute file URI and writes page.png:

browser.close()The 1440-by-900 viewport is an example setting, not a requirement. Change it to the dimensions your page needs, and keep it fixed when repeatability matters. The local-file approach is demonstrated in Anthropic’s static HTML automation example; local-file behavior can depend on how the HTML and its resources are arranged.

Wait for page-specific readiness when needed
page.goto() normally waits for the page’s load event, which includes dependent stylesheets, scripts, frames, and images. That does not guarantee that lazy-loaded resources or later application work have finished. If the page exposes a reliable ready signal or element, wait for it before taking the screenshot. For example, if the page sets window.appReady = true only after the content is ready:

A fixed delay is not a guarantee of readiness. Avoid treating generic network-idle as a universal test; the current Playwright Page API documentation discourages it for testing. Capture an element or return image bytes
Save one element
Use a locator screenshot when you need a component rather than the entire page. In JavaScript, the following writes the body as one image, then saves the full page separately:

Use the screenshot in code
Playwright can return screenshot image bytes instead of writing directly to a path. This is useful when another step in your workflow needs the image in memory; consult the Page API for the return value and options for your language binding.

Choose the pixel scale
scale: "css" produces one screenshot pixel per CSS pixel. scale: "device" captures device pixels, which can make the image larger on a high-DPI device. Keep the scale consistent when comparing screenshots.

Decide whether to disable motion
animations: "disabled" is useful for a deterministic static frame: Playwright fast-forwards finite animations and cancels infinite animations for the capture, then resumes them afterward. Leave motion enabled if the animated state itself is what you need to document.
Check the resulting image
Open the saved image and verify its dimensions, the bottom of a full-page capture, fonts, images, and any loading or transient state. For visual assertions, Playwright Test waits for two consecutive screenshots to match before comparing against a baseline; see Visual comparisons.
Troubleshoot missing or unreliable content
- The image is blank: confirm the local file URI points to the intended file and that the page opened successfully. Inspect the browser page and console for errors; do not assume every local-file layout or external reference will work in every environment.
- Images or fonts are missing: check whether their URLs are embedded or reachable from the capture environment. If they load late, wait for a relevant image, font, or page-ready condition before capture.
- The capture misses content lower on the page: use
full_page=Truein Python orfullPage: truein JavaScript. A viewport screenshot only contains the visible region. - The result changes between runs: hold the browser, OS, viewport, scale, and headless mode constant; wait for dynamic content to settle and disable animation if a static frame is desired.
- The screenshot catches a loading state: replace a generic load assumption or arbitrary delay with a page-specific ready condition that corresponds to the content you need.

Can I use a local HTML file with Playwright?
Yes. Resolve the file path and navigate to its file URI, as in the Python example. Whether every referenced resource loads depends on the file’s layout and the capture environment.
Should I wait for network idle before taking the screenshot?
Not as a universal readiness rule. Prefer a page-specific element or application-ready condition; Playwright’s current Page API documentation discourages generic network-idle as a testing criterion.
What does CSS scale change?
CSS scale makes one output pixel correspond to one CSS pixel. Device scale captures device pixels and may produce larger images on high-DPI displays.
