Use a browser automation script such as Playwright to capture the page, then schedule that script on a Linux VPS and save each image with a timestamp. The workflow has three separate parts—capture, scheduling, and storage—so choose the screenshot type and retention policy before choosing a server. AWS Lightsail lists a $5 USD/month Linux/Unix public-IPv4 bundle with 0.5 GB of memory in its general bundle table, but that listing does not establish that the smallest instance can reliably run a browser. AWS also says Mumbai-region plans include half the transfer allowance shown in that table. Treat it as a price reference, not a tested recommendation.
Plan the capture, schedule, and archive
Decide what each run must record before writing the script. A viewport screenshot captures only what is visible at the chosen browser size; a full-page screenshot captures the scrollable page and may produce a much taller, larger image; an element screenshot isolates a component such as a chart or product panel. Playwright supports all three approaches and saving screenshots to files: Playwright screenshot documentation.
- Capture: Choose the target URL, viewport dimensions, screenshot type, and the page state that indicates the content is ready.
- Schedule: Run the capture script at the required interval using the scheduler available on your Linux distribution. Check that distribution’s official documentation for its exact scheduling syntax; a specific cron or systemd command is not established here.
- Store: Give each image a predictable timestamped name, decide how long to retain files, and monitor disk space if the archive stays on the VPS. Object storage is an optional alternative, with its own cost and configuration.
This is an implementation outline, not a tested deployment recipe: no VPS or browser capture was tested for this guide.
Choose a VPS without mistaking price for capacity
AWS documents Lightsail as a VPS that can run code and store data. Its general Linux/Unix public IPv4 bundle table lists a $5 USD/month option with 2 vCPUs, 0.5 GB memory, 20 GB storage, and 1 TB transfer. AWS separately says Mumbai-region plans include “half the data transfer allowances mentioned in the bundles above.” Review the Lightsail bundle table alongside the regional pricing terms; the figures are a listing reference accessed in 2026, not a workload test or a guarantee of current total cost.

The cited AWS material does not show that the smallest plan has enough memory for a browser automation workload, and there is no verified minimum resource profile here. Before buying any low-cost VPS, check:
- Whether its CPU and memory can accommodate the browser and script, and whether required browser dependencies are supported.
- Storage capacity for the expected image sizes and retention period, plus backup and recovery options.
- Transfer allowance and overage rules, especially for the selected region.
- Regional network path and latency to the target site.
- Total monthly cost, including taxes and billing currency.
- How you will protect credentials and private screenshots; do not put secrets in source code or expose the archive publicly.

Build a repeatable Playwright capture
Install Playwright and its supported browser on the Linux host using the official installation instructions for the language and browser you choose. Then write a script that navigates to the target, waits for the page state that matters, and writes a screenshot. The following JavaScript illustrates the capture flow; supply your target URL, output directory, viewport, and selector as appropriate, and install the Playwright package and browser before running it.

For a viewport-only image, omit fullPage: true; for a single element, use the locator screenshot method, for example await page.locator('.chart').screenshot({ path: `screenshots/chart-${timestamp}.png` }). If the site requires authentication, use an appropriately protected credentials or browser-state approach rather than committing secrets to the script.

Wait for meaningful content
Waiting only for a navigation event may not mean the particular chart, table, or image you need has rendered. Prefer a wait for a relevant visible element or state. A fixed sleep can be unreliable because page and network timing vary. Set a timeout so a missing element becomes a logged failure instead of an indefinitely stuck run.
Keep inputs stable for comparisons
If you compare captures over time, keep the browser version, host operating system, viewport, locale, timezone, and other relevant rendering settings consistent. Playwright notes that visual output can vary with the host OS, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. Consistency reduces avoidable differences but cannot make every website deterministic. Use screenshot styling or masking for volatile areas, and account for animations, rotating banners, timestamps, ads, consent banners, and personalized content. Schedule runs and retain files
Once a manual run succeeds, configure the host’s scheduler to invoke the script at the desired interval. Use the exact syntax supported by the Linux distribution and scheduler you select; verify it against that system’s official documentation. Configure the scheduled task to run from the expected working directory or use absolute paths, because scheduled environments may not inherit an interactive shell’s directory or environment variables.

- Write captures to a known directory with sortable UTC timestamps or another consistent time convention.
- Set a retention policy, such as deleting files older than the period you actually need to keep; do not let the archive grow without limit.
- Preserve logs and make navigation or screenshot failures exit nonzero so the scheduler or its monitoring can surface missed runs.
- Monitor disk capacity and verify that output files are valid images. If storing elsewhere, include the storage service’s configuration and costs in the plan.
- Test the scheduled invocation as the same user and environment the scheduler will use before relying on unattended runs.

Troubleshoot recurring captures
- The script works interactively but not on schedule: Check the scheduled task’s working directory, user permissions, environment variables, executable paths, and log output. Use absolute paths where appropriate.
- The image is blank or missing a component: Wait for the specific visible selector or state required by the page, and inspect the failure logs. A navigation event alone may not mean dynamically rendered content is ready.
- Captures differ unexpectedly: Confirm that OS, browser version, viewport, locale, timezone, and headless configuration have not changed. Identify dynamic regions such as ads, animations, timestamps, or personalized modules; mask or style them when appropriate.
- The job stalls or fails under load: Review browser and script logs, navigation timeouts, and the instance’s available resources. The cited $5 Lightsail specification does not prove that its 0.5 GB memory is sufficient; select capacity based on observed needs rather than the price label.
- The archive stops saving images: Check directory permissions and available disk space, then verify the retention process and backup or upload path.
- Regional transfer differs from expectation: Recheck the provider’s current terms for the selected region; AWS’s Mumbai qualification reduces the listed bundle transfer allowance by half.
