For a standalone image of a graded DaVinci Resolve frame, park the playhead on the exact frame, choose the viewer that matches your deliverable, use Grab Still on the Color page, then export the Gallery still and inspect the saved file’s dimensions and image quality. A Gallery still is primarily a grade-reference object; it is not automatically an ordinary image file.
Choose the right kind of still first
“High quality” depends on what the image is for. Decide which of these outcomes you need before clicking an export command:
- A flat image file: a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or another format offered by your installed Resolve version for a presentation, web page, review, or archive.
- A reusable grade reference: a Gallery still that stores the reference image and the correction instructions used to recreate the shot.
- A frame from the source clip: the original clip image, without relying on the timeline’s output size.
- A frame from the finished timeline: the graded composite with titles, effects, transitions, and other timeline elements that are visible at that point.
The viewer and resolution you choose should follow that purpose. Do not assume that a larger export creates detail that was not present in the source.
Prepare the frame before capture
1. Set the playhead precisely
Open the project and move the playhead to the frame you actually want. Step through nearby frames when a subject is moving, a title animates, or an effect changes between frames. A one-frame difference can alter a facial expression, motion blur, subtitle, or transition.

2. Decide between Source Viewer and Timeline Viewer
Use the Timeline Viewer when the deliverable must show the finished timeline composite at the timeline’s intended dimensions. This is the appropriate choice for a frame containing timeline graphics, effects, or an edit decision.
Use the Source Viewer when you need a frame from the original clip at its source dimensions. A 2023 Blackmagic Design forum discussion reported that Export Current Frame as Still from the Source Viewer produced the source clip’s resolution, while the Timeline Viewer produced the timeline resolution. That is community-reported behavior rather than a current specification, so inspect the resulting file instead of relying on the report.
3. Confirm the project and timeline dimensions
Before exporting a timeline frame, verify the timeline resolution in your project settings. If the timeline is set below the source clip’s dimensions, a timeline still will not preserve the source’s unused pixels. Conversely, selecting a source frame does not automatically include timeline titles or compositing.
4. Check the grade with the viewer and scopes
On the Color page, inspect the image at a useful viewing size. Resolve’s histogram and other scopes help reveal crushed shadows, blown highlights, and imbalanced color components. Scopes evaluate the grade; they do not confirm the exported file’s pixel dimensions or compression, so you still need to inspect the saved image.
Capture a graded frame with Grab Still
- Go to the Color page.
- Choose the Source or Timeline Viewer according to the deliverable you selected above.
- Park the playhead on the target frame.
- Right-click inside the viewer and select Grab Still.
- Find the new still in the Color page’s Gallery. You can organize Gallery stills into albums for shot matching and grade reference.
The Gallery still is more than a screenshot. The DaVinci Resolve 15 Definitive Guide describes it as a reference image that also contains the instructions needed to rebuild that shot’s correction. That makes it useful for comparing grades and reusing a look, but a separate export step is required when you need a normal image file.

Export the Gallery still as an image
- In the Gallery, right-click the still you just created.
- Choose the available export command.
- Select a destination and a format offered by your installed Resolve release.
- Complete the export, then open the resulting file in an image viewer or editor.
Resolve’s current export labels, supported formats, bit-depth choices, and quality controls can vary by version. The accessible official material confirms the Gallery workflow but does not establish the complete current export dialog. Read the labels shown by your installation rather than applying a format or quality value from an older tutorial.
If the export dialog offers a lossless format and your workflow needs pixel-preserving output, it is generally preferable to a heavily compressed format. For a web thumbnail, a smaller compressed file may be appropriate. Make that choice based on the destination, and verify the result at 100% size.
Verify that the exported screenshot is actually high quality
Check pixel dimensions
Open the saved file’s properties or document information and record its width and height. Compare those numbers with the source clip or timeline settings you intended to use. This catches an accidental viewer choice, a smaller timeline, or an export setting that changed the output size.

- Look for softness caused by scaling, a low-resolution timeline, or a viewer capture rather than a frame export.
- Look for block edges, ringing, or color banding caused by compression.
- Check highlights and shadows for clipping that was not apparent at a reduced viewer size.
- Confirm that titles, overlays, masks, and composited elements are present when they are part of the deliverable.
Viewer overlays and timeline graphics can behave differently depending on the capture route and Resolve version. If a graphic matters, confirm it in the exported file instead of assuming that every viewer-only control is included.
Source frame versus timeline frame
| Question | Source Viewer route | Timeline Viewer route |
|---|---|---|
| Primary image | Original clip frame | Edited, graded timeline output |
| Likely dimensions | Community reports describe source-clip resolution | Community reports describe timeline resolution |
| Titles and timeline composites | Not inherently included | Use when the finished composite is required |
| Best use | Native clip reference | Deliverable matching the timeline |
| Authority of resolution behavior | Reported in a 2023 forum discussion; verify the actual file in your installed version | |
Neither route can restore detail missing from the source. If a clip is soft, underexposed, or heavily compressed, changing the screenshot format cannot make it genuinely sharper.

Troubleshooting common problems
The still is smaller than expected
Check whether you captured from the Timeline Viewer, whether the timeline resolution is lower than the clip, and whether an export option resized the image. Capture again from the intended viewer and inspect the output dimensions.
The image does not include titles or effects
You may have selected a source frame or a route that does not include timeline compositing. Return to the exact timeline frame, confirm the elements are visible in the Timeline Viewer, and export that result.

That is expected. Grab Still creates a Gallery item. Right-click the item and use the Gallery export command to create a standalone file.
The export looks washed out or too dark
Compare the exported file with the viewer and inspect the grade with scopes. Check color-management and display settings in the project, then test the file in the application where it will be used. Do not judge only from a browser or viewer with unknown color-management behavior.
The frame is one moment off
Move the playhead with frame-step controls and confirm the timecode before using Grab Still. For animated titles or transitions, check several adjacent frames and choose the one with the intended state.

- Tri-mode connection across Mac, PC, iOS, iPadOS, Android and Linux: Bluetooth for three devices, 2.4GHz wireless or USB-C wired, on a 3500mAh battery good for 450 hours.
The export menu differs from a tutorial
Resolve releases change labels and dialogs. Follow the commands visible in your installed version, and treat older instructions as workflow guidance rather than proof that a particular format, bit depth, or quality slider is available.
Performance, reliability, and file-management advice
- Use a descriptive filename containing the project, shot, frame or timecode, and version.
- Keep Gallery stills organized in albums when comparing grades across a sequence.
- Export a test frame before processing a large set so you can confirm dimensions, graphics, color appearance, and compression.
- Retain the original Gallery still when you may need to rebuild or compare the grade; the flat image alone does not carry the same correction instructions.
- Open the exported file from its final storage location. A successful command does not guarantee that a sync service, messaging app, or web CMS preserved the original pixels.
Or skip the browser setup
If what you really need is an image of a web page rather than a Resolve frame, ScreenshotNeo provides a one-request website screenshot API. It accepts cookie and consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be disabled. Bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.
See the complete parameter list and options in the ScreenshotNeo documentation. A basic call is:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Python:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Node.js:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
ScreenshotNeo supports full-page and element captures, dark mode, device presets, custom viewport and retina scale, PDF output, custom CSS and JavaScript, clicks, waits, request blocking, headers, cookies, user agents, authorization, timezone, geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, chosen cache TTLs, signed links, asynchronous webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, and a usage API. Does a higher-resolution timeline improve a low-resolution clip?
No. It changes the output canvas, not the detail captured by the source. Genuine detail must exist in the clip.
Why should I inspect the file after export?
Viewer choice, timeline settings, version-specific export controls, scaling, and compression can all change the result. File inspection is the reliable check for dimensions and visible quality.
