To capture an entire search engine results page (SERP) in one image with Python Selenium and headless Chrome, use Chrome DevTools Protocol (CDP) through Selenium’s execute_cdp_cmd method. Measure the page’s content dimensions, then call Page.captureScreenshot with a document-sized clip and captureBeyondViewport enabled. Decode the returned base64 data and save it as a PNG.
Capture a full-page SERP with Selenium and CDP
A standard WebDriver screenshot saves the current browser window; it does not automatically include the whole document. CDP’s Page.captureScreenshot command accepts a clip rectangle and a captureBeyondViewport option, which lets you request an image extending beyond the visible viewport. Selenium exposes CDP commands through execute_cdp_cmd.
The example below assumes Python, Selenium, Chrome, and a compatible ChromeDriver are installed and configured. Replace the example URL with the SERP you are authorized to capture. The CDP documentation is version-sensitive, so verify the metric names and command support for your installed Chrome version.

Recent Selenium setups can manage driver installation, but the example does not guarantee that every environment will configure it automatically.

Why the capture sequence matters
- Start Chrome headlessly. Headless mode controls how Chrome runs; it does not itself make a screenshot full-page. The CDP capture parameters provide that behavior.
- Load and wait for the content you need. A page-ready state is only a basic starting point. Search pages can insert modules later or defer images until they approach the viewport. Use a bounded, page-specific readiness condition when the screenshot must include those elements.
- Measure after loading.
Page.getLayoutMetricssupplies document dimensions. The example checkscssContentSizefirst and falls back tocontentSize, but metric fields can vary with protocol versions. - Capture the measured rectangle. The clip starts at
x: 0,y: 0, spans the measured width and height, and usesscale: 1. The response’sdatavalue is base64-encoded image content. - Write the image bytes. Base64-decode the response and save it with a matching extension. This example requests PNG.
The CDP protocol also supports JPEG and WebP formats. Its reference marks captureBeyondViewport as experimental and says it defaults to false, so do not assume the parameter or metric shape is identical across all Chrome/CDP versions. Make SERP captures repeatable
A screenshot records the page state at capture time, not a canonical or guaranteed-complete version of search results. SERPs can vary with location, language, session, personalization, timing, and dynamic modules. If you compare captures, keep the browser version, viewport, locale, session conditions, query, and readiness criteria consistent, and record those conditions alongside the image.

Lazy-loaded and delayed content
If results or images appear only after scrolling, a single wait for document.readyState may be insufficient. Use a bounded wait for the relevant selector or page-specific condition. Controlled scrolling can trigger deferred content, but it changes the scroll position and may affect sticky elements. After scrolling and waiting for the page to settle, measure the document dimensions again before capturing.
Image size and long documents
A very tall page can produce a large image and consume substantial browser and process memory. If capture fails or a single enormous image is unsuitable, capture viewport-sized sections and stitch them as a fallback. Stitching is more involved and can introduce visible seams, duplicate or missing content, and inconsistencies from sticky overlays or page changes between captures.

Troubleshoot common capture problems
- The image ends at the viewport. Check that you are using
Page.captureScreenshotwithcaptureBeyondViewport: trueand a clip whose height covers the measured document. A regular WebDriver window screenshot is not the same operation. - CDP reports an unknown command or parameter. Chrome/CDP support is version-dependent. Check the installed browser’s protocol support and confirm that the command and
captureBeyondViewportparameter are available. The tip-of-tree protocol reference can change and may not match an older installed browser; the CDP overview warns that the protocol can change in ways that break clients. - The script cannot find a content-size field. Inspect the keys returned by
Page.getLayoutMetricsfor your installed version, then use its document content-size metric. Do not substitute viewport dimensions: that would clip the page. - Some results or images are missing. The page may not have finished inserting them, or lazy loading may require scrolling. Wait for the specific content, allow it to settle, and remeasure before capture.
- The screenshot is blank or unexpectedly small. Confirm navigation reached the intended page, the capture ran after the relevant readiness condition, and the clip width and height are positive document dimensions. Inspect the returned CDP response and browser logs if the command fails.
- Capture fails on an extremely tall page. Reduce the captured area if acceptable or use chunked viewport captures and stitching, accounting for seams, sticky UI, and timing differences.

Use SERP screenshots responsibly
Search results can contain personalizing or location-dependent content, and automated access may be subject to the search engine’s terms and applicable access rules. Check those rules before collecting SERP screenshots, particularly for repeated or large-scale capture.
