Use Cypress’s built-in cy.screenshot() command with capture: 'fullPage' to save the whole application page as an image: cy.screenshot('full-page', { capture: 'fullPage' }). Cypress scrolls the application under test from top to bottom and stitches captures together, so prepare a stable page and review the result for dynamic content or repeated fixed elements.
Take a full-page screenshot in a Cypress test
Call cy.screenshot() after the test has navigated to the page state you want to document. An explicit capture mode makes the intent clear to anyone reading the test:
cy.screenshot('checkout-full-page', { capture: 'fullPage' })
Use this inside a Cypress test, after the page has reached the state you want to capture. For example, in a spec where the application is available at the configured base URL:
describe('Checkout screenshots', () => {
it('captures the full checkout page', () => {
cy.visit('/checkout')
// Add the test's actions and assertions that establish the desired page state here.
cy.screenshot('checkout-full-page', { capture: 'fullPage' })
})
})
Replace /checkout with a route in your own application. The screenshot command captures the page state reached by the test; it does not navigate to or prepare that state for you. If the page needs interaction, complete those actions before calling the command.

capture: 'fullPage' is Cypress’s documented default for application screenshots. You can therefore write cy.screenshot('checkout-full-page') for the same capture scope unless your project has changed the default. Keeping the option explicit can help prevent confusion when a test also takes viewport or runner screenshots.
Or skip the browser setup
If you need a screenshot from a URL rather than an artifact inside a Cypress test, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. A single GET request can return PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. For example, this cURL request saves a WebP screenshot:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Replace YOUR_API_KEY with your key and change the target URL as needed. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. The same request in Python:
import requests
r = requests.get(
"https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot",
params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"},
timeout=90,
)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Or in Node.js:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
- Cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets can be removed before capture; each cleanup step can be turned off.
- Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed. The response includes
X-Page-VerdictandX-Billedheaders to say what happened. - An MCP server exposes screenshot, page-info, and PDF-capture tools to Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.
- The Free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card. Paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

Choose the capture scope you need
The capture option determines what Cypress puts in the screenshot. Match it to the artifact’s purpose rather than taking a full page by default.
| Capture value | What it includes | Useful when |
|---|---|---|
fullPage |
The application page, captured by scrolling from top to bottom and stitching the images together. | You need a record of content beyond the visible browser area. |
viewport |
The currently visible application viewport. | The visible state is what matters, or the full page would include unrelated content. |
runner |
The browser with the Cypress Command Log. | You want debugging context around the application. |
There is one important exception to choosing the scope yourself: during cypress run, Cypress coerces failure screenshots to runner capture. Cypress also takes screenshots on test failure during cypress run by default; that automatic behavior does not apply during cypress open. If you do not want automatic failure screenshots in run mode, the screenshotOnRunFailure configuration option can disable them.
Where Cypress saves screenshots and how names work
By default, screenshots go in the cypress/screenshots directory. Cypress organizes unnamed screenshots by spec and test. Supplying a name, such as checkout-full-page, gives the artifact a recognizable filename. If a filename already exists, Cypress adds a suffix rather than replacing the earlier image; set overwrite: true when replacing an existing file is intentional.
The screenshots output directory can be changed with the screenshotsFolder setting. Check that setting when an artifact appears to be missing: it may have been written to a configured location rather than the default directory. For repeatable visual-review workflows, use descriptive names and make sure the directory containing the artifacts is included in the workflow that collects or inspects them.

Make the page stable before capture
cy.screenshot() is asynchronous: the application may change between the moment the command is issued and the actual capture. A full-page image can therefore contain a mixture of states if content is still loading, animating, or changing while Cypress scrolls.
- Navigate to the intended route and perform the interactions needed to reach the desired state.
- Wait for the application-specific signal that means the relevant content is ready. For example, wait for a page element or a known loading state to settle rather than relying on an arbitrary pause where a stronger signal is available.
- Call
cy.screenshot()only after the page is in the state you intend to preserve. - Inspect the resulting image, especially on pages with lazy-loaded content, animation, or fixed and sticky interface elements.
Cypress offers screenshot options that can help with capture conditions: disableTimersAndAnimations suppresses timers and CSS animations during capture, while onBeforeScreenshot and onAfterScreenshot provide callbacks around the capture. Use these options when they fit the test’s needs, but do not treat them as a substitute for setting up the correct application state.
Account for fixed headers, sticky controls, and long pages
Full-page capture is a scroll-and-stitch operation, not a single photograph of an infinitely tall browser viewport. Cypress scrolls through the application and combines captures. A fixed header, sticky navigation, or floating control may consequently appear in unexpected places in the stitched image. Content that moves or updates as the page scrolls can also make sections inconsistent from one part of the image to another.
- If a fixed or sticky element is repeated or overlaps content, inspect the full screenshot before using it as a baseline or evidence.
- If the page changes as it scrolls, stabilize that behavior where possible or choose a smaller capture scope.
- If only one section matters, consider capturing a specific region with the
clipoption or using an element-level visual-testing approach instead of comparing the entire page. - If the page is too large for the intended review, the
scaleoption can scale the application to fit. Check that text and visual details remain readable at the resulting size.
The clip option crops the final image. It can make an artifact more focused, but cropping is not the same as capturing only the viewport: choose the capture scope first, then decide whether the final image needs a crop.

Use Cypress screenshots for visual regression carefully
Cypress can capture screenshots, but built-in screenshot capture does not compare an image with an approved baseline. A visual-regression workflow adds baseline selection, comparison, and review to the capture step. Cypress’s visual-testing guide discusses optional integrations, including Happo, Percy, and Sauce Labs Visual; an integration is not required to take a screenshot.

Full-page comparisons are useful when the entire page is the product being checked, but they can produce differences from unrelated content or dynamic regions. Comparing a particular element can reduce unrelated failures when the test question concerns only one component. Decide what should be stable, select the screenshot scope to match that target, and review changes rather than assuming every pixel difference represents a product defect.

The screenshot is only the visible viewport
Confirm that the command uses { capture: 'fullPage' } and that project defaults have not been changed. A viewport capture is intentionally limited to the visible application area. Also verify that you are inspecting the screenshot from the test you intended, not an automatically captured failure artifact.
The image contains repeated or misplaced headers
This is a known consideration for full-page stitching with fixed or sticky elements. Inspect the stitched result and, if it is unsuitable for the test, capture a viewport or a focused region instead. For a visual comparison, an element-level capture may avoid making unrelated page layout part of the check.
The screenshot shows a loading or intermediate state
Because capture is asynchronous, the application can change after the command is issued. Wait for the page’s meaningful ready condition and stabilize relevant animations or timers before capturing. Cypress provides disableTimersAndAnimations for capture-time suppression, but application-specific loading may still need to finish first.
The file is in a different directory or has a different name
Look in cypress/screenshots first, then check whether screenshotsFolder has been configured. A named screenshot uses the supplied name, while unnamed captures are organized by spec and test. Duplicate names receive a suffix unless overwrite: true is set.

A failure screenshot looks different from the requested application screenshot
Failure screenshots in cypress run are coerced to runner capture to include the Cypress Command Log. This behavior is distinct from an explicit application screenshot in a passing test. Automatic failure screenshots can be disabled with screenshotOnRunFailure: false in configuration.
The screenshot is taken, but no visual test result appears
Capture and comparison are separate steps. Cypress’s built-in command produces an image artifact; comparing it against an approved baseline requires a visual-testing workflow or integration.

A full-page image requires Cypress to scroll and stitch multiple captures, so it involves more work than capturing only the viewport. Very long or actively changing pages also give more opportunity for content to vary during capture. For stable artifacts, use the narrowest capture scope that answers the test question and avoid capturing a moving page before its relevant content is ready.
For debugging, a runner screenshot can include useful command-log context, while an application screenshot is cleaner for reviewing the page itself. During run-mode failures, Cypress’s automatic runner capture serves the debugging case; a separately named application screenshot is still useful when a test needs a page artifact in its expected state.
Cypress’s documentation does not state a per-screenshot charge or a fixed capture-time guarantee in the material covered here. Treat screenshot output as a test artifact, not as proof that an image comparison has passed or that every dynamic page will be captured in an identical state. If a workflow needs image comparison, establish its baseline and review process separately.
