To capture an entire scrollable page, use browser automation such as Playwright and set fullPage: true, or send the URL to a hosted screenshot API that accepts a full-page option. Playwright gives you control over the browser; a hosted API avoids setting up that browser yourself.
What a full-page screenshot captures
A full-page screenshot represents the page’s scrollable document, not just the portion visible in the browser window. Playwright describes it as a capture “as if you had a very tall screen and the page could fit it entirely.”
That distinction matters: the browser viewport controls the page’s layout, while full-page mode extends the captured image down the scrollable page. Long pages can therefore produce very tall image files.
Option 1: Capture the page with Playwright
In Playwright, navigate to the page and pass fullPage: true to page.screenshot(). The option defaults to false, so leaving it out captures only the viewport. The example below uses Node.js and writes the image to a file.

Playwright can also return the screenshot as a buffer when you omit path; use that if you need to process or store the image in your own application rather than write it directly to disk.
Choose a scale deliberately
Playwright’s screenshot scale option can be css or device. The documented default is device: it uses device pixels and can create larger images on high-DPI displays. Set scale: 'css' for one output pixel per CSS pixel when a more compact, CSS-sized capture is preferable.

Capture a region instead of the entire page
If you need a specific rectangle rather than the full document, use the screenshot API’s clip option with x, y, width, and height. A clip is a region capture, not a substitute for fullPage: true.
Option 2: Request a full-page screenshot from an API
A hosted screenshot API typically accepts a target URL and a full-page setting, then returns an image or other configured output. The exact endpoint, authentication, response type, supported formats, quotas, and pricing depend on the provider; check its current documentation before building against it.

Choose a wait condition that matches the page
A page can finish its initial navigation before its meaningful content appears. Hosted API options such as a navigation wait strategy, waiting for a selector, or an additional delay can help target a known page state. They do not guarantee that every lazy-loaded image or infinite-scroll feed has finished loading. Inspect the resulting screenshot and tailor the wait strategy to the site.

Which approach should you use?

The available documentation does not establish a universal winner for speed, price, or reliability. Compare the current provider terms and the specific controls your page needs.
Make dynamic pages more predictable
- Use a meaningful readiness signal. If a page renders important content after navigation, wait for a selector that represents that content rather than assuming the initial load is sufficient.
- Allow for delayed content when necessary. A configured delay can help with known late-loading elements, but validate the result; a delay alone does not prove the whole page is ready.
- Check the bottom of the capture. Confirm the full-page image includes the expected lower sections and that lazy-loaded content appeared.
- Account for page-specific behavior. Infinite scrolling and other site-specific loading patterns may need additional handling; neither a full-page flag nor a generic wait setting guarantees that all content is present.
Troubleshooting
The screenshot contains only the visible viewport
In Playwright, pass fullPage: true; it is not enabled by default. For a hosted service, confirm that the request uses its documented full-page parameter.

Images or lower-page sections are missing
The page may load them only after a delay, after a particular element appears, or as the user scrolls. Wait for a meaningful selector or use a suitable delay if the API offers one, then inspect the output. A generic full-page setting does not guarantee that site-specific lazy loading or infinite scrolling has completed.
The output is larger than expected
A full-page image can be much taller than the viewport. In Playwright, the default device-pixel scale can also increase the image dimensions on high-DPI displays; consider scale: 'css' if one pixel per CSS pixel meets your needs.
The API request fails or returns an unexpected format
Check the provider’s current documentation for its endpoint, authentication, required URL encoding, output-format parameter, and response handling. These details are provider-specific, so do not assume that a request example for one service will work unchanged with another.
