The fullPage option captures the complete scrollable document instead of only the current viewport. Keep this code out of browser client components: launching Chromium requires a server-side, test, or other Node execution context.
The direct Playwright solution
Playwright defines a full-page screenshot as an image of the full scrollable page, as if the page were displayed on a very tall screen. In SvelteKit, the capture itself is not a special SvelteKit API. Playwright opens the rendered route in a browser, waits for the state you need, and captures the document.
import { chromium } from 'playwright';
const browser = await chromium.launch();
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.goto('http://localhost:5173/example');
await page.screenshot({
path: 'screenshot.png',
fullPage: true
});
await browser.close();
Save this as a Node-executed script or place the equivalent steps in a Playwright test. The important switch is fullPage: true; the option defaults to false, so omitting it produces a viewport screenshot.
Put the capture in the right SvelteKit execution context
Do not call chromium.launch() from a Svelte component, a browser-side onMount callback, or code shipped to visitors. Those contexts run in the user’s browser and are not the controlled Node environment Playwright expects. Use one of these locations instead:

- CRISP CLARITY: This 23.8″ Philips V line monitor delivers crisp Full HD 1920x1080 visuals. Enjoy movies, shows and videos with remarkable detail
- INCREDIBLE CONTRAST: The VA panel produces brighter whites and deeper blacks. You get true-to-life images and more gradients with 16.7 million colors
- THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
- WORK SEAMLESSLY: This sleek monitor is virtually bezel-free on three sides, so the screen looks even bigger for the viewer. This minimalistic design also allows for seamless multi-monitor setups that enhance your workflow and boost productivity
- A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
- A Playwright test: best for repeatable visual checks in CI.
- A Node script: useful for an occasional screenshot, documentation build, or release task.
- A server-side job or endpoint: appropriate when your deployment can launch a browser and you have secured the operation.
The exact SvelteKit adapter and endpoint design depends on your deployment and security model. If you expose screenshot functionality through an endpoint, authenticate it, restrict which URLs can be requested, and avoid allowing arbitrary internal-network targets.
Install and run a local script
In a project that does not yet have Playwright, install the package and its browser binary:
npm install -D playwright
npx playwright install chromium
Create scripts/screenshot.mjs (or use TypeScript with your normal Node TypeScript runner):
import { chromium } from 'playwright';
const browser = await chromium.launch();
try {
const page = await browser.newPage({
viewport: { width: 1440, height: 900 }
});
await page.goto('http://localhost:5173/example');
await page.screenshot({ path: 'artifacts/example.png', fullPage: true });
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
Start the SvelteKit development server in one terminal, then run the script in another. In production, replace the local URL with the deployed route and make sure the machine running the script can reach it.

Wait for the page state you actually want to capture
Navigation completing does not guarantee that client-rendered data, lazy sections, fonts, or images have reached the visual state you expect. Use an application-specific readiness condition before the screenshot. A locator is usually more deterministic than an arbitrary delay.
Wait for a visible application marker
await page.goto('http://localhost:5173/dashboard');
await page.getByRole('heading', { name: 'Dashboard' }).waitFor();
await page.locator('[data-testid="report-ready"]').waitFor({ state: 'visible' });
await page.screenshot({
path: 'dashboard.png',
fullPage: true,
scale: 'css'
});
Add a stable marker such as data-testid="report-ready" when the data needed for the image has rendered. This avoids a race in which the screenshot catches a loading skeleton or an empty list.
Handle known asynchronous content
If a page intentionally reveals content after a short transition, wait for that specific state. A timeout can be a fallback, but it is less reliable than a selector tied to application state:
await page.goto('http://localhost:5173/catalog');
await page.locator('[data-testid="catalog-items"]').waitFor({ state: 'visible' });
await page.waitForTimeout(300); // only for a documented visual transition
await page.screenshot({ path: 'catalog.webp', fullPage: true });
There is no universal wait rule for every SvelteKit application. Choose a condition that represents completion for your own route, and give it a sensible timeout so a broken page fails rather than silently producing an incomplete image.

Control dimensions, scale, and output format
Full-page mode controls document height; the viewport still controls the layout width and responsive breakpoints. Set the viewport explicitly when screenshots must be comparable.
const page = await browser.newPage({
viewport: { width: 1280, height: 800 },
deviceScaleFactor: 1
});
await page.goto('http://localhost:5173/example');
await page.screenshot({
path: 'example.webp',
fullPage: true,
scale: 'css'
});
scale: 'css': one output pixel per CSS pixel, generally producing smaller and more predictable dimensions.scale: 'device': preserves device-pixel fidelity and can create larger images on high-DPI settings. The API reference describes device scale as the default.
Playwright documents PNG, JPEG, and WebP output. The filename extension normally communicates the intended type; use PNG for lossless UI detail, JPEG when a smaller photographic file is more important, and WebP when your downstream system accepts it.
Example: JPEG with a fixed viewport
await page.screenshot({
path: 'long-page.jpg',
fullPage: true,
type: 'jpeg',
quality: 85,
scale: 'css'
});
JPEG quality is relevant only to JPEG output. For pixel-sensitive documentation or regression comparisons, keep the viewport, scale, browser version, and page state consistent between runs.
Capture a route that requires SvelteKit data or authentication
Public or locally running routes
Use the exact route URL, including its path and any query string that selects the desired state:
await page.goto('http://localhost:5173/reports/weekly?team=platform');
await page.locator('[data-testid="weekly-report-ready"]').waitFor();
await page.screenshot({ path: 'weekly-report.png', fullPage: true });
Authenticated routes
For a protected page, establish a test account or authenticated browser context before navigation. Keep credentials out of source control and do not print cookies or tokens in logs. The capture process should exercise the same permission and loading path that a real permitted user would see.
If the page redirects to a login screen, the screenshot code can still succeed while capturing the wrong document. Assert the expected URL or a page-specific locator before saving:
await page.goto('http://localhost:5173/account');
await page.getByRole('heading', { name: 'Your account' }).waitFor();
await page.screenshot({ path: 'account.png', fullPage: true });
Use the Playwright CLI when a script is unnecessary
Playwright’s CLI has a direct full-page command:
playwright-cli screenshot --full-page --filename=full-page.png https://example.com
The --full-page flag changes the capture from the visible viewport to the complete scrollable page, and --filename chooses the output path. Use the CLI for a one-off public page; use a Node script when you need SvelteKit-specific readiness checks, authentication, repeatability, or custom browser configuration.
Common failures and precise fixes
The image contains only the first screen
Cause: fullPage was omitted or set to false.
Fix: pass fullPage: true in the screenshot options. Do not confuse a larger viewport height with full-page mode; a tall viewport can still omit content below the document’s visible area.

The screenshot shows a loading spinner or missing cards
Cause: the capture ran immediately after navigation while SvelteKit was still fetching or rendering data.
Fix: wait for a locator that appears only when the required state is ready. If several independent sections load, wait for each meaningful marker or expose one page-level ready marker.
The script cannot launch Chromium
Cause: the Playwright browser binary is not installed, or the runtime lacks permission to launch it.
Fix: run npx playwright install chromium in the environment that executes the script, then check container or server restrictions. Do not move the launch call into client code; that changes the execution context rather than fixing the missing browser.
The route is unexpectedly a login page or error page
Cause: the script lacks the required session, uses the wrong base URL, or the application returned an error during navigation.
Fix: assert a route-specific heading or ready marker, verify the URL, and capture console or network diagnostics while debugging. Treat an assertion failure as a failed capture instead of publishing the resulting image.
Images or lazy sections are blank
Cause: the page defers loading until content approaches the viewport, or an image request has not completed.
Fix: wait for a locator representing the loaded section or image, and ensure the page has reached the state your application uses to reveal lazy content. A full-page screenshot does not define a universal policy for every lazy-loading implementation.

- INCREASED VERSATILITY: Connect to more; Plug devices straight into your monitor for increased flexibility, making your computing environment even more convenient
Output dimensions differ between machines
Cause: different viewport sizes, device scale factors, browser defaults, or the use of device-pixel scaling.
Fix: set the viewport explicitly and choose scale: 'css' for CSS-pixel output when predictable dimensions matter. Use scale: 'device' when high-DPI fidelity is the requirement.
The page is extremely long or memory usage is high
Cause: a full-page image must represent the entire scrollable document, so very long pages naturally require more browser and image memory.
Fix: capture only the route and content you need, avoid accidental infinite-scroll pages, and consider splitting a huge document into purposeful sections. Keep the browser lifecycle bounded with try/finally so failures still close Chromium.

Choose between API code, CLI, and a visual test
| Approach | Best for | Readiness control | Full-page setting |
|---|---|---|---|
| Node Playwright script | Scheduled jobs, documentation, custom workflows | Locators, assertions, and application-specific waits | fullPage: true |
| Playwright test | Repeatable visual checks and CI | Test fixtures, locators, and assertions | page.screenshot({ fullPage: true }) |
| Playwright CLI | One-off public-page captures | Command-line navigation only; less application-specific control | --full-page |
All three approaches still need a reachable URL and a browser-capable execution environment. The choice is mainly about how much control you need over state, credentials, diagnostics, and repeatability.

ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. A single GET request can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. It handles visitor-facing cleanup before capture by accepting cookie or consent banners and removing more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be turned off.
Only clean shots are billed. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and each response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Its MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools to Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.
For a SvelteKit route that is publicly reachable, call the API directly:
