Use a real browser to render the Django view, then ask Playwright for a full-page screenshot. In Python, the essential call is page.screenshot(path="full-page.png", full_page=True). Django serves the route; Playwright loads the rendered page and captures the entire scrollable document rather than only the visible viewport.
This guide shows a standalone script, a Django browser-test pattern, waiting for dynamic content, handling assets and authentication, choosing image options, and diagnosing common failures.
What “full page” means in a Django project
A Django template or view does not create an image by itself. The view returns HTML (and references to CSS, JavaScript, fonts and images). A browser must execute that page before a screenshot can represent what a visitor sees. Playwright launches a browser, navigates to the Django URL and captures the rendered document.
With Python Playwright, full_page=True changes the capture from the current viewport to the page’s full scrollable height. It is equivalent to photographing a very tall screen: content below the fold is included in one image. This is different from a viewport screenshot, which contains only the pixels currently visible.

Prerequisites
- A running Django site reachable from the machine running the script, or a Django test server.
- Python and the Playwright package installed in the same environment as the capture code.
- A Playwright browser binary installed for that package.
- A URL that the browser can access, such as
http://127.0.0.1:8000/reports/or a test server URL.
Install Playwright in your project’s virtual environment, then install its browser binaries using the installation command documented for your installed Playwright version. Keep the Python package and browser binaries compatible, especially in CI.
Standalone Python capture
Start Django with python manage.py runserver (or use your normal production-like server), then create a script such as capture_page.py:

It is useful for pages that load data immediately, but it is not a guarantee that every animation or delayed request has finished. If your application keeps a WebSocket or polling request open, use a targeted wait instead.
Use a selector or delay for dynamic pages

Capture from a Django browser test
Django’s browser-test pattern supplies a page connected to a live test server. The route is built with Django’s URL resolver, so the test remains valid if the URL pattern changes:

)In many projects, a fixture or custom base class creates page and tears down the browser. The important integration is navigation through self.live_server_url plus the route generated by reverse(). For a standalone script, use the actual running URL instead of live_server_url.

Viewport and device scale
The viewport determines responsive breakpoints. A 1440-pixel desktop viewport may render a different menu and column layout than a 390-pixel mobile viewport. Set it explicitly for repeatable output:
page = browser.new_page(viewport={"width": 1280, "height": 800}, device_scale_factor=1)Use a larger device_scale_factor for higher device-pixel detail, or keep it at 1 for compact CSS-pixel output. Higher scale increases dimensions and file size.

PNG, JPEG and quality
page.screenshot(path="page.jpg", full_page=True, type="jpeg", quality=85)PNG is lossless and suits text, diagrams and archival captures. JPEG is smaller but introduces compression around text and sharp edges. WebP is available when supported by your installed Playwright version and downstream tooling.
Clipping and selective capture
full_page=True captures the entire scrollable page. Use clip when you need a defined rectangle instead, or locate an element and capture that element when the page itself is not the deliverable:

Freeze unstable visual state
- Disable transitions or wait until animations finish before capture.
- Scroll through the page when an application only loads images after intersection with the viewport.
- Wait for a chart, table, or “ready” marker rather than relying only on network idle.
- Set a fixed viewport and timezone when visual comparisons must be reproducible.
Authentication, static assets and local environments
Authenticated pages
A browser context starts without your Django session. Log in through the UI, reuse a saved authenticated storage state, or set the same cookies and headers your application expects. Never commit real session cookies or API tokens to a test repository.
CSS, images and fonts
A screenshot can be technically successful while looking wrong if static files return 404, a font has not loaded, or an image is still lazy-loading. Inspect the page’s failed requests, verify that STATIC_URL and media URLs are reachable from the browser, and wait for critical image elements before capture. In containerized CI, make sure the browser can resolve the hostname used in the URL; localhost inside a container may refer to the container itself rather than the Django process.

Infinite scroll and very tall documents
Full-page capture includes the document height that exists at capture time. An infinite-scroll feed may therefore produce only its initially loaded items. Scroll incrementally and wait for new content if you intentionally need more, or use a bounded route designed for exports. Extremely tall pages consume substantial memory; capture a specific element, split the document, or generate a PDF when one giant bitmap is impractical.

Performance, reliability and storage
Browser startup is expensive compared with an HTTP request. For batches, keep one browser process alive and create isolated contexts or pages per job. Close pages and contexts after each capture to prevent memory growth. Use deterministic readiness checks, bounded timeouts and retries only for transient navigation failures; retrying a permanently broken route just increases load.
Store screenshots outside the repository when they are build artifacts. Include the URL, viewport, browser version and capture timestamp in metadata or a neighboring record so a visual difference can be reproduced. For regression tests, compare like-for-like browser and font environments; otherwise a font substitution can look like an application change.

Can I capture a Django page without deploying it publicly?
Yes. Run Django on a network address reachable by the browser process, such as a local development or live test server. The browser and server must be able to resolve and connect to the same host and port.
Why is my screenshot taller than the browser window?
That is the expected result of full-page mode: Playwright renders the complete scrollable document as one image. Set a viewport only to control responsive layout, not the final document height.
