For a better iPhone portrait, start with a clear subject and good light, tap the subject to set focus and exposure, and use Portrait mode when its background blur improves the scene. Check the result before you move on: blur and lighting effects are options, not substitutes for sharp focus, a natural expression, or thoughtful framing.
Choose Portrait mode or Photo mode with depth capture
Portrait mode applies a depth-of-field effect to keep the subject sharp while blurring the foreground and background. Apple describes it as supporting people, pets, or objects, but the feature and its behavior vary by iPhone model. To use it, open Camera, swipe to Portrait, and wait for the camera to indicate that the scene is ready. If it reports that the subject is too close, too far away, or the area is too dark, adjust your distance or find brighter light rather than forcing the shot.
On some iPhones, you can instead shoot in Photo mode and retain depth information for a portrait effect later. When the Depth control appears, this gives you the option to decide about the effect after capture; it is not available on every iPhone. Choose Portrait mode when you want to compose with the portrait treatment visible, and Photo mode with depth capture when you want that later flexibility.

Pick a lighting effect that fits the scene
Portrait Lighting changes the visual treatment of a portrait. Apple’s current guide lists these effects; available choices depend on device support and software version.

These effects change the look; they do not guarantee flattering light or fix an unsuitable scene. Compare the available options on your own phone and keep the effect that suits the subject and setting.

Set focus and exposure on the subject
iPhone normally chooses focus and exposure automatically. If the face or other important detail is not being prioritized, tap that area in the Camera preview. Use the exposure control that appears to brighten or darken the image: lift it if the subject is too dark, or lower it if bright areas are losing detail.
To keep those settings for upcoming frames, touch and hold the focus area until AE/AF Lock appears. Apple documents these controls in Use iPhone camera tools to set up your shot. Locking can help when framing several shots from the same position; tap elsewhere to choose a different focus area when the subject or composition changes.

Make the frame easier to read
Before taking the picture, look beyond the subject. Move or reframe to reduce distracting objects behind the head, competing bright patches, or clutter at the edges. A little distance between the subject and background can make the portrait feel clearer, whether or not you use blur.
Ask the subject to hold a comfortable expression and take a short sequence rather than relying on one frame. Inspect the eyes and hair edges at full size. Portrait blur can create awkward transitions around fine details, so check whether the effect helps the image; if it does not, use a less pronounced look or a standard Photo instead.

Use Photos to refine an eligible portrait
Open the image in Photos and tap Edit. For eligible portraits, you can adjust background blur and Portrait Lighting. On iPhone 13 or later, you can also change the portrait focus point. These editing options are documented in Apple’s Portrait photo editing guide; controls and eligibility can differ by device and software.
Make one adjustment at a time and compare it with the original. If the blur, lighting, or focus change makes the image look less convincing, use Revert to restore the original. The Photos guide for iOS 26 describes these Portrait editing controls, so exact labels may differ in other software versions.

Get better results in dim light
First consider whether you can move the subject to brighter light or add light from a useful direction. Night mode is available only on supported iPhones, and keeping the phone still during capture helps reduce movement. Apple’s Night mode guide recommends a tripod for even more detailed Night mode photos.
A tripod or compatible phone mount is optional, not a prerequisite. It can help steady the phone, but it cannot guarantee good focus, flattering light, or a natural expression. Check that any mount fits your iPhone and case before buying.
Check which controls your iPhone supports
Portrait mode, Portrait Lighting, depth capture in Photo mode, focus-point editing, and Night mode are not universal features. Apple’s Portrait mode support article gives model-specific conditions; for example, it says the rear camera must detect a person’s face for Portrait mode on iPhone XR, iPhone SE (2nd generation) and later, and iPhone 16e. Check Apple’s current guidance for your exact model and software rather than assuming every control will appear.
