Start a Clips project and choose its shape
-
Open Clips, tap Projects, then tap New Project.
-
Choose the aspect ratio before recording: 16:9, 4:3 or Square. Apple documents 16:9 as the default on iPhone and 4:3 as the default on iPad. Square is another option for a square-format video.
A project can combine material recorded in Clips with photos and video already in your photo library. Apple’s project and recording guide describes these steps.

Record video or make a still-photo clip
Record a video
Touch and hold the red Record button. Keep holding it while you record. To record continuously without holding the button, swipe up on Record; tap Record when you want to stop. Use the camera chooser to switch between the front and rear cameras.
Turn a photo into a timed clip
Tap Shutter to take the photo, then touch and hold Record for the amount of time the still should appear in your project. The result is a photo clip with a duration in the sequence, rather than only an image sitting in the camera roll.

When you add media directly, Clips preserves the source item’s original aspect ratio and orientation. That means an imported image or video may not match the project’s chosen shape. Apple explains both import paths in its Clips recording and import guide.
Trim and rearrange clips
Select material in the clip timeline or thumbnail sequence to edit it. Clips supports editing individual clips and moving them to change the order; it also lets you save or delete clips. For the exact controls available in your app version, use Apple’s Clips User Guide, which covers editing and organizing clips.

- Filters: Apply a visual treatment to footage.
- Stickers and emoji: Add graphic elements to a clip.
- Posters: Use a designed title card or visual opening.
- AR Spaces and Selfie Scenes: Apply additional visual treatments where available in the app.
These features and their editing workflows are covered in Apple’s Clips User Guide.

Add music or other audio
Add a soundtrack or song to the project. Clips also supports music imported from other apps where that option is available. Apple’s guide covers adding soundtracks and songs, but does not establish a single audio workflow that applies to every source or app version; check the in-app controls for the specific audio you want to use.
Save, export or share the finished video
When your sequence is ready, use Clips’ save or share controls to keep a video with its effects, export video, or send it to a destination such as Mail, Messages or Instagram. Apple’s guide also covers importing and exporting video projects. The options shown can depend on the apps and sharing destinations available on your device. See the Clips User Guide for saving and sharing instructions.
