Run Chrome in headless mode, wait until the page is ready for the content you need, then use Selenium’s screenshot method with an absolute PNG path that the non-root process can write to. Check the method’s return value: save_screenshot() returns True when the file is saved and False for an I/O error. A non-root setup does not automatically require Chrome’s --no-sandbox flag.
Save a Selenium screenshot to a writable absolute path
This Python example captures the current browser window. It creates the output directory, starts Chrome headlessly, checks that the screenshot was saved, and always closes the browser:

Selenium documents save_screenshot(filename) as saving the current window in PNG format, recommends a full path with a .png extension, and reports an I/O failure with a False return value. Set the capture dimensions and page-ready condition
Choose the right screenshot scope
Selenium’s Python screenshot method captures the current browser window. If the image is clipped or has unexpected dimensions, first decide whether you need a window/viewport image or a full-page image. Full-page screenshot behavior is not established uniformly across the reviewed Selenium bindings and versions, so check the API for the binding and version you use rather than assuming this method captures the entire document.

Set a deliberate viewport
For repeatable dimensions, configure the browser window or viewport before capturing. Chrome’s headless documentation demonstrates setting --window-size for command-line screenshots; Selenium’s Chrome options accept Chrome command-line arguments. Exact configuration details and rendering can vary by binding and version. See Selenium’s Chrome-specific functionality and Chrome’s headless documentation.
Wait for the content you need
driver.get() navigates to the URL, but important page content may render asynchronously. Before calling save_screenshot(), use an explicit wait for a meaningful condition—for example, a particular element becoming visible—when the target page requires it. Avoid a universal fixed sleep: the necessary wait depends on the page and the content being captured.

Use headless Chrome without weakening the sandbox by default
The example uses --headless=new, an option shown in Chrome’s headless documentation for Selenium. Do not add --no-sandbox just because the process runs as non-root. Chrome’s FAQ says, “--no-sandbox is not needed if you properly setup a user in the container.” That guidance applies to a properly configured container user; it does not establish that every host policy or container configuration has identical sandbox requirements. If Chrome fails at startup, investigate the actual error and runtime policy rather than disabling the sandbox as a routine workaround.
Check Chrome and ChromeDriver before changing security settings
If Chrome will not start, verify that the Chrome and ChromeDriver major versions match. Selenium’s current Chrome documentation says Selenium 4 supports Chrome v75 and later and calls for matching major versions. Confirm the installed versions and resolve any mismatch before changing sandbox settings. See Selenium’s Chrome documentation.

Troubleshoot missing, failed, or incorrectly sized screenshots
- No PNG appears: Confirm the path is absolute and the parent directory is writable by the non-root runtime UID. Check whether
save_screenshot()returnedFalse; Selenium documents that result for an I/O error. - Chrome fails to launch: Check that Chrome and ChromeDriver major versions match. Then inspect the startup error and the container or host’s sandbox policy; do not assume non-root execution itself requires
--no-sandbox. - The screenshot misses dynamic content: Wait for the relevant element or page condition before capture instead of relying on an arbitrary delay.
- The screenshot is clipped or dimensions differ: Set the intended viewport or window dimensions, and confirm whether you need a window screenshot or full-page capture.

Can Selenium save a screenshot as something other than PNG?
The documented Python method save_screenshot(filename) saves PNG. Selenium also exposes screenshot bytes through get_screenshot_as_png() and a base64 representation through get_screenshot_as_base64(); those methods return data rather than saving a file themselves.

Does Chrome’s --screenshot option use Selenium’s output path?
No. Chrome’s direct headless CLI example writes screenshot.png to the current working directory. With Selenium’s API, your script supplies the filename to the screenshot method.
