Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Use Selenium’s Python driver.save_screenshot() method to save the browser’s current window as a PNG. Give it an explicit Windows file path, make sure the destination folder exists, and check its Boolean return value.
Save the current browser window as a PNG
Install a current Selenium release and Python, then run this short script. In supported current Selenium releases, Selenium Manager handles driver setup for Chrome.
from selenium import webdriver
# Selenium Manager handles driver setup in supported current Selenium releases.
driver = webdriver.Chrome()
try:
driver.get("https://example.com")
saved = driver.save_screenshot(r"C:UsersYourNamePictureswebsite.png")
if not saved:
raise OSError("Selenium could not save the screenshot")
finally:
driver.quit()
Replace YourName with your Windows account folder. The r"..." raw string keeps backslashes from being interpreted as Python escape sequences. Create the Pictures folder first if it does not exist and ensure the process can write to it. Selenium documents save_screenshot as saving the current window to a PNG; the method can return False when file writing fails. See the Python WebDriver API.
Choose the screenshot scope you need
| Capture type | What it captures | How to save it | Important distinction |
|---|---|---|---|
| Current window | The browser’s current window view | driver.save_screenshot(path) or driver.get_screenshot_as_file(path) |
Use a PNG filename and an explicit path. Do not assume this captures the entire scrollable document. |
| One element | A located WebElement | element.screenshot(path) |
Useful when only a specific heading, card, or other element is needed. |
| Full document | The page beyond the current browser view | Browser-specific API | The reviewed dedicated full-page methods are documented for Firefox; check support for your exact browser and Selenium version. |
Selenium’s official interaction documentation shows both current-context and element screenshots. The Firefox WebDriver API documents save_full_page_screenshot and get_full_page_screenshot_as_file. Do not treat those Firefox methods as a cross-browser guarantee.

Control the current-window dimensions
If the screenshot’s dimensions matter, set the browser window size before capture. Selenium also documents window-rectangle and fullscreen controls. These determine the capture viewport, but do not ensure identical rendering across computers, browsers, fonts, or page states. See the window controls in the Selenium interaction documentation.
Save a specific element
After locating the element, call its screenshot method with a PNG path:

title = driver.find_element(By.CSS_SELECTOR, "h1")
saved = title.screenshot(r"C:UsersYourNamePicturesheading.png")
if not saved:
raise OSError("Selenium could not save the element screenshot")
This captures the element rather than the browser window; the official interaction guide demonstrates the Python element-screenshot approach.
Wait for the page state your screenshot requires
driver.get() navigates to the page, but a site may continue changing after navigation because of asynchronous content. There is no universal wait that guarantees every page is ready. Use an explicit wait for the particular element or condition your workflow depends on, then take the screenshot. Keep browser shutdown in a finally block so an exception during navigation or saving does not leave the session open.

Troubleshoot missing or incomplete PNG files
- Invalid or unexpected Windows path: Use a raw string such as
r"C:UsersYourNamePictureswebsite.png", or escape each backslash. Include the filename and.pngextension. - Folder does not exist or is not writable: Create the parent directory and confirm the account running Python has write access.
- The method returns
False: Treat this as a file I/O failure; verify the path and permissions, then check the return value again. - Only part of the page appears: The ordinary WebDriver screenshot method captures the current browser window, not necessarily the full scrollable document. Use an element screenshot for one element, or verify a browser-specific full-page API for a full document.
- Content is missing from the image: Wait for the specific page element or state needed before capturing; navigation completion alone does not define readiness for every site.
- Browser remains open after an error: Put
driver.quit()in afinallyblock, as in the example.
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo takes a screenshot with one GET request and returns an image or PDF. Its API documentation describes the request options.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com -o shot.webp
Cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed before capture by default, with each step able to be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed; response headers report the page verdict and billing status. An MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.
