Open the website in a private browser window, then press Windows+Shift+S to capture it with Snipping Tool. Choose the area or window, then save or copy the snip. The screenshot shortcut works the same whether the page is open in a regular or private browser window.

Take a screenshot of a private browser window

  1. Open a private window. In Chrome, press Ctrl+Shift+N or choose More > New Incognito window. In Edge, select Settings and more > New InPrivate window.
  2. Open and arrange the website. Navigate to the page and position or scroll it to show the content you want. Close any menus or overlays that should not appear in the capture.
  3. Open Snipping Tool’s capture overlay. Press Windows+Shift+S.
  4. Choose a capture mode and select what to capture. Drag around a region, outline a freeform shape, select a window, or capture the full screen.
  5. Review the snip. Windows copies the capture to the Snipping Tool window. From there, you can annotate or crop it, copy it, save it, or share it.

For a full-screen capture copied to the clipboard, Microsoft also documents PrtSc. Use the Snipping Tool overlay when you need a particular region or browser window. Microsoft’s Snipping Tool instructions cover Windows 10 and Windows 11.

What Incognito and InPrivate do—and do not—hide

Incognito and InPrivate change what the browser keeps on your device after the private session; they do not make you invisible to websites or the organization managing your network. Google says sites and network managers may still observe Chrome activity. Chrome removes temporary site data when the session ends, but downloaded files and saved bookmarks remain. Google’s explanation of Incognito mode describes those limits.

Microsoft Support says: “Microsoft Edge will delete your browsing history, cookies, and site data, as well as passwords, addresses, and form data when you close all InPrivate windows.” Favorites and downloaded files remain. Extensions allowed to run in InPrivate may also save browsing history. Microsoft’s InPrivate guidance explains what Edge clears.

#1 Best Overall

A screenshot is a separate file or clipboard artifact: closing the private window does not erase an image you saved or shared. Treat it according to the sensitivity of the page, and remove saved copies yourself if needed.

When the screenshot shortcut does not work

  • A managed computer blocks the shortcut. Your organization may restrict captures through device or browser policy. Ask its IT administrator what capture methods are permitted.
  • Edge’s DisableScreenshots policy is enabled. Microsoft says this policy blocks screenshot keyboard shortcuts and extension APIs. Web Capture in Edge or operating-system and other applications may still offer capture methods, depending on the device’s configuration. See Microsoft’s DisableScreenshots policy reference.
  • Chrome is managed with screenshot prevention. Google documents screenshot prevention for managed users and browsers with Chrome Enterprise Premium. The policy can target websites and apply to keyboard shortcuts and apps or extensions using Chrome’s capture API. Ask your administrator whether the restriction applies to the page you are trying to capture. See Google’s Chrome Enterprise screenshot-prevention guidance.

Or skip the browser setup

For an automated capture from a script or service, ScreenshotNeo takes a screenshot through one GET request. Its clean-shot flow accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be disabled. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. It also offers an MCP server with screenshot tools for AI agents.

Use this cURL example; replace the URL with the page you are authorized to capture. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options and response details.
