Capture a website in Chromium with Playwright
In a Node.js project with Playwright installed, save this as screenshot.js and run it with node screenshot.js. The script launches Chromium, opens the target URL, saves a PNG, and closes the browser even if capture fails.

})();The essential sequence is launch, create a page, navigate with page.goto(), capture with page.screenshot(), and close the browser. If your project already provides a Playwright page or test fixture, use that page rather than launching a second browser.
Choose what to capture
Visible viewport
The basic call await page.screenshot({ path: 'website.png' }) captures the page’s current viewport. The fullPage option defaults to false.

Full scrollable page
Set fullPage: true to capture beyond the visible viewport:

Use a locator when you only need a particular matched element, such as a header:

Control format, resolution, and output
Image format and quality
Playwright supports PNG, JPEG, and WebP screenshots. When you provide a path, its extension determines the format; if no extension indicates a format, PNG is the default. The quality option applies to JPEG and WebP, not PNG. For example:

Choose scale: 'css' for one output image pixel per CSS pixel. Choose scale: 'device' to use device pixels; on high-DPI displays this can make the output substantially larger.

Omit path to receive a buffer, useful when another part of your program will process or transmit the image:

Use screenshots in visual regression tests
For screenshot baselines with Playwright Test, use expect(page).toHaveScreenshot(). The assertion waits for two consecutive screenshots to match, then compares the last image with the expected snapshot. This assertion belongs to Playwright Test rather than the standalone Page API.

Troubleshoot common capture problems
The screenshot only shows the top part of the page
That is the default viewport capture. Add fullPage: true if the intended output is the full scrollable document.
The output format is not what you expected
Check the path extension: Playwright infers the image type from it. Use a .png, .jpg, or .webp path to make the intended format explicit. The quality option does not affect PNG.
The image file is unexpectedly large
If you used scale: 'device', high-DPI device pixels can increase image dimensions and file size. Try scale: 'css' when one pixel per CSS pixel is sufficient.

A visual test fails despite no intended page change
Rendering can vary across operating systems, browser versions, settings, hardware, power sources, and headless modes. Compare the environments used to create and check the baseline, and keep them stable.

Does a Playwright screenshot capture the browser interface?
No. The Page screenshot methods capture page content, not browser chrome such as tabs or the address bar.
Can I capture a screenshot without saving a local file?
Yes. Call page.screenshot() without a path to get image bytes in a buffer.
