You can preview and capture a website at a tablet-sized viewport on a Mac without owning an iPad: open the page in Safari, enter Responsive Design Mode, set the viewport dimensions, then take a Mac screenshot. For a closer iPadOS Safari check, use Simulator; for the actual page on an iPad, use its screenshot controls and choose Full Page when you need the whole webpage.

Choose the right capture method

What you need Best method What it captures or checks
A quick tablet-sized layout preview on a Mac Safari Responsive Design Mode A resizable simulated viewport; presets approximate device behavior, not exact device rendering.
To check iPadOS-specific Safari behavior Safari with Simulator, or a physical iPad Closer platform-specific rendering and interaction.
A quick Chrome-based viewport capture Chrome DevTools Device Mode A simulated Chrome viewport; it does not validate iPadOS Safari behavior.
A screenshot of the page on a real iPad, including content below the screen Screenshot controls on the iPad, then Full Page The actual Safari page; Full Page captures beyond the visible screen.

“iPad Air size” does not identify one exact viewport: the requested generation and orientation are unspecified, and device presets are only approximations. If your goal is to test a CSS breakpoint, set the width and height you want to check rather than assuming one dimension fits every iPad Air. Apple says its viewport presets “offer a good approximation, but they don’t represent exact layout, rendering, and behavior as experienced on an actual device.” Apple’s Responsive Design Mode documentation explains the distinction.

Capture a tablet-sized webpage on a Mac with Safari

  1. Open the target webpage in Safari.
  2. If Safari’s Develop menu is not visible, enable Safari’s developer features in Safari settings.
  3. Focus the webpage and choose Develop > Enter Responsive Design Mode. Apple documents Control–Command–R as the keyboard shortcut.
  4. Select a device preset or enter the viewport width and height you want to inspect. Rotate between portrait and landscape as needed. Adjust pixel ratio when it affects the layout or image resources you are checking.
  5. Capture the visible preview with the Mac’s screenshot controls.

Responsive Design Mode is the quickest built-in choice for checking a responsive layout at a custom size. It is a desktop preview, not proof that the page will render and behave identically in iPadOS Safari.

When to use Simulator instead

For a closer iPadOS rendering check, use Open with Simulator from Responsive Design Mode when available, or use Simulator options in Safari’s Develop menu. Availability depends on having Xcode and the relevant simulator runtime installed. WebKit describes Simulator as useful for spotting platform-specific behavior, including viewport metadata, rendered type size, and double-tap zoom. Apple also documents inspecting iOS and iPadOS simulators in its web inspection guide. A simulator is more relevant than a simple desktop viewport when the issue depends on iPadOS Safari rather than a CSS width alone.

Use Chrome DevTools for a Chrome-based preview

  1. Open the webpage in Chrome and open DevTools.
  2. Turn on Device Mode and resize the responsive viewport or select a device simulation.
  3. Open More options > Capture screenshot to save the viewport shown in Device Mode.

See Chrome DevTools Device Mode documentation for the current controls. This is useful for a quick tablet-sized layout capture, but it is not an iPadOS Safari test.

Take a screenshot on a physical iPad

  1. In Safari, open the webpage you want to capture.
  2. Quickly press and release the top button and either volume button. On an iPad with a Home button, press the top button and Home button together. The button combination depends on the iPad hardware model.
  3. Tap the screenshot preview. Choose Full Page to capture the webpage beyond the visible screen.
  4. Save the result as an image or PDF.

Apple’s iPad screenshot guide covers the screenshot controls. This route captures Safari on actual hardware; use it when a real-device result matters or when you need the full page rather than only the screen viewport.

Or skip the browser setup

ScreenshotNeo can capture a page through one API request and return an image or PDF. It is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers; it does not reproduce an iPad Air’s specific Safari or iPadOS behavior. Use it when you need a repeatable website capture, not as a substitute for device-specific QA.

Troubleshoot common capture problems

Responsive Design Mode or the Develop menu is missing

Enable Safari’s developer features in Safari settings, then return to the page and open Develop > Enter Responsive Design Mode. If the shortcut does not work, use the menu path.

The page does not look exactly like an iPad Air

A responsive viewport preset is an approximation. Set the dimensions you need for layout work; use Simulator or a physical iPad to investigate platform-specific rendering and interaction.

The screenshot only includes what is on screen

The Mac and Chrome viewport capture methods described above capture the visible preview. On a physical iPad, open the screenshot preview and choose Full Page to capture beyond the visible Safari screen.

Simulator is not available

Simulator use depends on Xcode and the relevant runtime being installed. If it is unavailable, use Responsive Design Mode for a basic layout check, or test on a physical iPad when exact iPadOS behavior is important.

Practical limits and cost

The Mac workflows use built-in browser tools and avoid buying an iPad for a basic responsive-layout check. Simulator requires an installed Xcode environment; a physical iPad is needed for a true on-device Safari capture. If repeated captures are the goal rather than interactive device QA, ScreenshotNeo offers a no-card Free plan of 1,000 shots per month, with paid plans starting at $5 for 3,000; yearly billing gives two months free. Its screenshots are API captures of webpages, not a guarantee of a particular iPad Air viewport or iPadOS rendering.
