The correct screenshot shortcut depends on your Linux desktop. On GNOME, press Print to open the screenshot overlay; Alt+Print captures the focused window and Shift+Print captures the whole screen. On KDE Plasma, Print Screen opens Spectacle; Meta+Print Screen captures the active window, Shift+Print Screen captures all monitors, and Meta+Shift+Print Screen selects a rectangle.
If those keys do nothing, open your desktop’s application launcher and search for Screenshot, or inspect Keyboard settings. Linux has no single shortcut that is guaranteed across every desktop, distribution customization, session type or release.
Identify your desktop environment first
Linux distributions can use GNOME, KDE Plasma, Xfce, Cinnamon, MATE and other desktops. Their screenshot programs and key bindings are independent. The procedures below cover the documented GNOME and KDE workflows; for another desktop, launch its screenshot utility from the system menu and check its keyboard-shortcut editor.
| Desktop | Open capture tool | Full screen | Window | Region |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| GNOME | Shift+Print | Alt+Print (focused window) | Choose an area in the overlay | |
| KDE Plasma | Print Screen (Spectacle) | Shift+Print Screen (all monitors) | Meta+Print Screen (active window) | Meta+Shift+Print Screen |
Key behavior can vary with desktop version and customized bindings. Meta is usually the Windows or Super key.

Take screenshots in GNOME
Use the screenshot overlay
- Press Print, or open the system menu and select the screenshot control.
- Select Area, Screen or Window in the overlay.
- For an area, drag the handles or crosshair around the content and activate capture. For a window, select the window you want; for a screen, select the display.
- Open
~/Pictures/Screenshotsto find the saved image. GNOME Help describes filenames beginning withScreenshotand containing the capture date and time.
GNOME also copies the capture to the clipboard. Switch to an image editor, document, chat or email and press Ctrl+V to paste it without browsing for the file.
Use GNOME’s direct shortcuts
- Alt+Print: capture the focused window.
- Shift+Print: capture the entire screen.
If a shortcut is different on your installation, open Settings → Keyboard and inspect or change the predefined screenshot shortcuts. Laptop keyboards may require an Fn key, depending on firmware.
Take screenshots in KDE Plasma
Capture with Spectacle
- Press Print Screen to open Spectacle.
- Choose the target: whole desktop, current monitor, active window, window under the pointer or rectangular region.
- Capture, then save the image or send it to another application using Spectacle’s controls.
- To change the destination or filename pattern, open Spectacle’s Save settings. The default folder is configurable, so do not assume it is the same as GNOME’s folder.
Use no-dialog shortcuts
- Meta+Print Screen: active window.
- Shift+Print Screen: the entire desktop across all monitors.
- Meta+Shift+Print Screen: rectangular region.
Run Spectacle from a terminal
For scripted or background captures, start Spectacle from a terminal and consult the options supported by your installed version:
spectacle --help
KDE documents a background mode that captures without showing the GUI or requiring interaction. Exact flags are version-dependent, so use the help output on the machine where the script will run.
Copy, save and find the image
Clipboard versus file
Clipboard capture is fastest when you need to paste into another program. A saved file is better for archiving, uploading later or editing. GNOME documents both destinations automatically. Spectacle lets you save or send the result, while its Save settings determine the folder and naming pattern.
When you cannot find a screenshot
- In GNOME, check
~/Pictures/Screenshots. - In KDE, open Spectacle’s Save settings to see the configured directory.
- Search your home folder for files beginning with
Screenshotor sort the configured folder by modification time. - If you only used a clipboard action, paste into an editor and save a file; no disk copy may have been created by that particular action.
Use Flameshot for annotation
Flameshot adds drawing and editing controls during a capture. Within its capture interface, Ctrl+C copies the image and Ctrl+S saves it. Distribution packages and official options include native packages, AppImage, Snap and Flatpak.
Configure the Print Screen key
Flameshot’s global Print Screen shortcut may need to be assigned manually. KDE’s preconfigured Spectacle bindings can conflict with it; disable or change Spectacle’s binding before assigning the same key to Flameshot. You can also leave the desktop shortcut unchanged and launch Flameshot from the application menu or a custom command.
Wayland considerations
On Wayland, screenshot permission can be mediated by the XDG Desktop Portal. If Flameshot cannot capture, approve the portal prompt and check your desktop’s portal permissions. Flameshot labels GNOME Wayland and Plasma Wayland support as experimental, so behavior can differ between compositors and releases. The built-in GNOME or Spectacle tool is a useful fallback.
Rank #3
Choose the workflow that fits the job
| Need | Best starting point | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| One full-screen image | Desktop shortcut | Fast and requires no extra installation. |
| One window | GNOME Alt+Print or KDE active-window shortcut | Avoids cropping other windows later. |
| Part of the display | GNOME overlay or KDE rectangular-region shortcut | Drag exactly the required bounds. |
| Multiple monitors | KDE Spectacle | Its documented full-desktop shortcut captures all monitors. |
| Arrows, blur or markup | Flameshot | Annotation happens before saving or copying. |
| Repeatable terminal automation | Spectacle background/command-line mode | Suitable for scripts; verify flags with spectacle --help. |
Common problems and fixes
Print does nothing
Confirm which desktop is running, then inspect its Keyboard settings for a screenshot binding. Another application may own the key, or a laptop may require Fn. Launch Screenshot, Spectacle or Flameshot from the menu to separate a shortcut problem from a capture problem.
The wrong window is captured
Focus the target window first. GNOME’s Alt+Print captures the focused window; KDE’s active-window shortcut likewise depends on focus. For a window under the pointer, open Spectacle and select that target explicitly.
The result is blank or permission is denied on Wayland
Try the desktop’s built-in utility and respond to any XDG Desktop Portal permission prompt. Third-party utilities may have incomplete support on a particular compositor or release.
The shortcut conflicts with Flameshot
Open KDE’s shortcut configuration, remove or reassign Spectacle’s Print Screen binding, then assign the key to Flameshot. Alternatively, keep both bindings and invoke one tool from its launcher.
The file is saved somewhere unexpected
GNOME uses ~/Pictures/Screenshots according to its help page. Spectacle’s directory is configurable; open Save settings rather than guessing.
Or skip the browser setup
If what you need is a screenshot of a website rather than your Linux desktop, ScreenshotNeo returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF from one request. It is #1 for website screenshot APIs here because it removes consent banners, popups and chat widgets before capture, bills only clean shots, and has a $5 paid plan for 3,000 shots.
Use the API documentation at https://screenshotneo.com/docs/ for all options. A basic cURL request is:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Python:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Node.js:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
ScreenshotNeo can also capture full pages with lazy images, one CSS-selected element, dark mode, device presets, custom viewport and retina scale; set PDF paper, margins, orientation and page ranges; supply CSS, JavaScript, cookies, headers, user agent, timezone or geolocation; click or hide elements; wait for a selector, delay or network idle; block ads, trackers, requests or resource types; resize or cache with a chosen TTL; create signed image links; submit asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks; capture up to 100 URLs per bulk call; and use its usage API and OpenAPI specification. Its response identifies page verdict and billing with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers: bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits cost nothing.

FAQ
Can I capture only one monitor?
GNOME’s overlay lets you choose a screen. In KDE, open Spectacle and select the current monitor rather than the whole desktop.
How do I screenshot a window under the mouse in KDE?
Open Spectacle and choose its “window under the mouse” target; the direct shortcut is documented for the active window, not necessarily the window beneath the pointer.
Does Linux automatically include the mouse pointer?
Pointer inclusion is controlled by the desktop screenshot utility and its version-specific settings. Check the options shown by GNOME Screenshot or Spectacle before capturing.
