To screenshot an Internet Explorer page, press Windows+Shift+S, choose a Snipping Tool mode, and select the browser area. Use Alt+PrtScn for only the active Internet Explorer window, or Windows+PrtScn to save the entire screen as an image. These are Windows shortcuts, so they work independently of an Internet Explorer screenshot command.
Choose the capture you actually need
| What you want | Shortcut or method | Result |
|---|---|---|
| A region of the page | Windows+Shift+S, then rectangular or freeform mode | The selected snip opens in Snipping Tool for copying, editing, saving, or sharing. |
| The Internet Explorer window | Alt+PrtScn | The active window is copied to the clipboard. |
| Everything currently visible on the monitor | Windows+PrtScn | A full-screen image is saved in Pictures > Screenshots on supported Windows setups. |
Internet Explorer does not require a special browser menu for any of these captures. Arrange the page first, because a screen shortcut records what is visible at that moment: the toolbar, address bar, scroll position, and any open dialog are included according to the capture scope you choose.
Capture a selected part of an Internet Explorer page
- Bring Internet Explorer to the foreground. Scroll to the content and resize or position the window as needed.
- Open Snipping Tool. Press Windows+Shift+S. Windows displays the Snipping Tool capture overlay.
- Pick a mode. Choose rectangular snip for a normal box, freeform snip for an irregular outline, window snip for a complete application window, or full-screen snip for every monitor display.
- Select the content. Drag around the page area, or choose the Internet Explorer window when using window mode. The overlay temporarily dims the screen while you select.
- Edit or store the result. The capture opens in Snipping Tool. From there you can annotate it, copy it, save it to an image file, or share it.
Rectangular mode is usually the clearest choice for documenting one error message, form, table, or paragraph. Window mode avoids accidental selection edges but includes the entire selected Internet Explorer window rather than one element inside it.
Copy only the active Internet Explorer window
Click the Internet Explorer window so it is active, then press Alt+PrtScn. Windows copies an image of that active window to the clipboard; it does not automatically create a file.

- Activate Internet Explorer.
- Press Alt+PrtScn (the key may be labeled PrtSc, PrtScn, or Print Screen).
- Open Paint, Word, an email composer, or another image-capable application.
- Press Ctrl+V to paste the capture.
- Use that application’s Save or Export command to create a PNG or another supported format.
This method is useful when you need the whole browser window in a document immediately. It is a clipboard operation, so copying another item afterward can replace the screenshot before you save it.
Save a full-screen screenshot directly
Press Windows+PrtScn to capture the entire screen and save the image automatically. Open File Explorer and go to Pictures > Screenshots. The folder is the documented location for these saved captures.
Some compact keyboards and laptops do not have a dedicated Print Screen key. Microsoft documents Fn+Windows+Space as an alternative on supported hardware. Your keyboard may require holding Fn for the Print Screen function, so check the key legends if the normal combination does nothing.
A full-screen capture includes everything visible on the display, not just Internet Explorer. Close unrelated windows, notifications, and private information before using this method.

Screen capture versus a full webpage screenshot
The shortcuts above capture a region, window, or full display. A full display capture still contains only the portion of a long webpage that is currently visible. The reviewed Microsoft instructions do not establish a built-in scrolling, full-page webpage capture for Internet Explorer.
For a long article or results list, take several overlapping Snipping Tool captures and label their order, or use a service that explicitly renders the whole page. Do not describe a Windows+PrtScn image as a full-page capture when content below the fold was never displayed.
What to do when a shortcut does not work
Windows+Shift+S produces no overlay
- Open Start, search for Snipping Tool, and launch it directly.
- Use the New capture command and select a mode from the Snipping Tool window.
- Check whether another utility has changed Print Screen behavior or whether a managed device restricts the shortcut.
Alt+PrtScn pastes the wrong thing
- Click Internet Explorer immediately before pressing the keys; Alt+PrtScn captures whichever window is active.
- Paste into Paint to verify the clipboard contents, then save before copying anything else.
- If your keyboard requires Fn, try Fn+Alt+PrtScn according to its key layout.
Windows+PrtScn does not create a file
- Confirm that the keyboard exposes a working Print Screen function; try the documented Fn+Windows+Space alternative on supported laptops.
- Look in Pictures > Screenshots rather than the browser’s download folder.
- Use Snipping Tool instead if your Windows settings assign a different action to Print Screen.
The capture contains sensitive or unwanted content
Cancel and rearrange the page before capturing. Hide passwords, personal addresses, notifications, and other windows. Snipping Tool can crop or mark up a capture, but editing does not prevent the original information from having been copied or saved elsewhere.
Internet Explorer screenshot limitations and edge cases
Multiple monitors
Full-screen mode can include the displays that Windows treats as the full desktop. If you need only the monitor showing Internet Explorer, use window mode or drag a rectangular snip around that display’s browser area.

Menus and transient pop-ups
A menu can close when you invoke a keyboard shortcut. If that happens, use Snipping Tool’s delayed capture option when available in your Windows build, or capture the surrounding page after the menu has closed. The exact controls can vary with Windows version and settings.
Keyboard and policy differences
Shortcut behavior depends on keyboard hardware, Fn-layer design, Windows settings, and application context. Microsoft’s current keyboard-shortcut guidance applies to Windows 10 and Windows 11, but an individual legacy Windows and Internet Explorer combination may present different controls.
Or skip the browser setup
If you need a repeatable image of a URL rather than a one-off view on your screen, ScreenshotNeo returns a screenshot with one HTTP request. It accepts a URL and can return PNG, JPEG, WebP, or a PDF. Before capture, it can accept cookie or consent banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be switched off.
Only clean shots are billed. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page result with X-Page-Verdict and billing with X-Billed headers.

ScreenshotNeo supports full-page rendering with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element capture, dark mode, 12 device presets or a custom viewport, retina scale, PDF paper size, margins, landscape mode and page ranges. You can also supply custom CSS or JavaScript, click an element first, hide selectors, wait for a selector, delay, or network idle, and block ads, trackers, requests, or resource types.
For authenticated or regional pages, the request can include custom headers, cookies, a user agent, an Authorization value, timezone, or geolocation. Other controls include transparent backgrounds, image resizing, a cache TTL you choose, signed links for public <img> tags, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API, and an OpenAPI specification. Parameter names used by other screenshot APIs also work, which can simplify migration.
An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients, so an AI agent can request captures without driving a local Internet Explorer window.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I capture an Internet Explorer page without showing browser controls?
A window or full-screen shortcut records the visible browser interface. To render page content independently of the browser chrome, use a webpage renderer such as ScreenshotNeo and request the URL directly.
Where is a Snipping Tool image saved?
A snip opens in Snipping Tool; choose its Save command and location. The automatic Pictures > Screenshots location applies to Windows+PrtScn captures.
