Use Selenium’s element screenshot method on the <iframe> element to capture its rendered frame region. Cross-origin status does not, by itself, prevent WebDriver from switching into the child browsing context—but ordinary JavaScript in the parent page still cannot freely read a cross-origin frame’s DOM. The right method depends on whether you need the visible iframe, a precise crop, or the entire embedded document.
Capture the iframe element with Selenium
Find the iframe in the parent document, wait for it and its content to render, then call your Selenium binding’s element screenshot method. The WebDriver behavior described in the cited W3C working draft maps a screenshot of a FRAME or IFRAME element to a screenshot of that frame’s BODY. This is the first approach to try for the iframe’s rendered region. W3C WebDriver working draft (2015)
The exact method name varies by language binding. In Python, the following saves the iframe element screenshot as a PNG:
from selenium import webdriver
from selenium.webdriver.common.by import By
from selenium.webdriver.support.ui import WebDriverWait
from selenium.webdriver.support import expected_conditions as EC
url = "https://example.com/page-with-iframe"
driver = webdriver.Chrome()
try:
driver.get(url)
frame = WebDriverWait(driver, 20).until(
EC.presence_of_element_located((By.CSS_SELECTOR, "iframe"))
)
WebDriverWait(driver, 20).until(EC.visibility_of(frame))
WebDriverWait(driver, 20).until(
lambda d: frame.get_attribute("src")
)
frame.screenshot("iframe.png")
finally:
driver.quit()
Replace the example URL and selector with the page and iframe you need. If the page contains several frames, use a selector that identifies the intended one, such as iframe#checkout or an iframe with a known title. Presence and visibility of the iframe do not guarantee that its embedded page has finished rendering; use an application-specific wait when you can identify a reliable ready condition.

What this captures
An element screenshot captures rendered pixels, not HTML or DOM access. It is suitable when you want the iframe as a visual element. It does not automatically mean “capture the entire embedded website”: if the inner document is taller than the iframe viewport, the element screenshot may represent only the frame’s displayed body area. Confirm the actual output in your browser and driver.
Switch into a cross-origin frame only to inspect or interact
You do not need to switch frame context just to capture the iframe element. Switch when your test needs to locate or interact with controls inside it. The cited 2015 W3C WebDriver working draft says WebDriver is not bound by the same-origin policy when switching into child browsing contexts. That is a WebDriver automation capability, not permission for JavaScript running in the parent page to traverse a cross-origin document. W3C WebDriver working draft (2015)

finally:
driver.switch_to.default_content()
Use switch_to.default_content() when finished so later lookups run against the top-level page. For nested frames, switch into each parent frame in sequence, then return to the top level when done.
Choose the capture method for the output you need
| Approach | Best fit | Portability and limits |
|---|---|---|
| Selenium iframe element screenshot | The iframe’s rendered frame region | WebDriver-facing approach; validate driver behavior and whether the captured body region matches the requested viewport or crop. W3C working draft |
| Top-level visible-rectangle screenshot | The iframe exactly as it appears in the parent viewport | Requires accurate viewport coordinates and accounting for scrolling, scaling, borders, and clipping. |
| Chrome DevTools Protocol (CDP) screenshot with a clip | A precise region in Chrome or Chromium | Chromium-specific and version-sensitive; not a portable WebDriver command. The Chromium v136 protocol defines Page.captureScreenshot with a clip parameter. Chromium DevTools Protocol |
| WebDriver BiDi | Bidirectional browser automation workflows | Selenium describes BiDi as its cross-browser protocol direction, but its reviewed documentation does not establish screenshot API parity with CDP. Selenium WebDriver BiDi documentation |
Use Chrome CDP for a clipped screenshot when needed
If Selenium’s element screenshot does not give the desired crop, Chrome’s CDP Page.captureScreenshot supports a clip region and options such as image format and capture beyond the viewport. The command and parameter details are Chromium-specific, so check the protocol version that matches your browser. Chromium DevTools Protocol

A clipped capture requires the iframe’s rectangle in the coordinate system CDP expects. If deriving it from the iframe element, account for viewport position, scroll offset, device scale, borders, and whether the frame is partly offscreen. Do not assume a rectangle obtained for one screenshot API can be reused unchanged in another.
CDP is not a generic Selenium WebDriver command. Selenium’s BiDi documentation presents BiDi as the cross-browser direction and notes the current relationship with CDP; it does not establish an equivalent BiDi screenshot command for this use case. Selenium WebDriver BiDi documentation

Wait for a useful frame, not merely an iframe tag
A frame can exist before its content is ready. Lazy loading, navigation, a consent wall, or delayed rendering may leave an early screenshot blank or incomplete. A robust capture sequence is:
- Load the top-level page and wait for the iframe element to appear.
- Wait until the iframe is visible and, if possible, until its expected
srcor application-specific ready condition is present. - Allow the embedded content to render; use a known inner element as a ready signal if your workflow requires switching into the frame.
- Capture the iframe element, or switch context only if you need to inspect or operate on its contents.
- Check the saved image dimensions and content in the target browser and driver before relying on it in a test pipeline.
There is no single universal “frame finished rendering” signal for every site. A fixed sleep can be a pragmatic fallback for a known controlled page, but explicit conditions are less brittle than assuming a particular delay is enough.

Troubleshoot blank, missing, or incorrectly cropped screenshots
- The image is blank: the iframe may be present but its page has not rendered, may still be navigating, or may display a consent or access screen. Wait for a meaningful ready condition and inspect the frame visually in the browser.
- The iframe cannot be found: confirm the selector against the parent document, wait for the element, and check whether it is inside another iframe or created dynamically.
- Switching frames fails: wait for the frame element before switching, verify you are currently in the expected parent context, and check whether the frame was replaced during page navigation.
- The crop is not the visible frame you expected: an iframe element screenshot is described by the cited draft as the frame BODY region. If exact top-level viewport geometry matters, evaluate a top-level rectangle capture or Chrome CDP clipping instead.
- Only part of a long embedded page appears: the iframe’s visible viewport and the full inner document are different capture targets. A full inner-page capture may require scrolling and stitching or a browser-specific strategy; verify behavior in the target setup.
- It works in one browser but not another: record the Selenium binding, browser, driver, and versions, then validate the element screenshot’s crop and dimensions for each target combination. The explicit WebDriver wording referenced here comes from a 2015 working draft, not a current final-spec page.
Or skip the browser setup
If you need a screenshot through an API instead of managing a Selenium browser, ScreenshotNeo takes a URL in one GET request and can return PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. It accepts cookie banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; those steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed, and the response reports the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server offers screenshot tools for AI agents, including Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.
For a page URL, for example:

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options and response details. This captures a page URL; it is not a Selenium command for selecting an iframe element or switching into its browsing context. ScreenshotNeo offers full-page capture, element selection by CSS selector, and other capture options. Sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month with no card.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does cross-origin status stop Selenium from switching into an iframe?
No. The cited W3C WebDriver working draft describes switching into child browsing contexts without the same-origin restriction. This does not grant the parent page’s JavaScript access to the frame DOM.
Does an iframe element screenshot capture the embedded site’s full page?
Not necessarily. The documented behavior concerns the iframe’s frame BODY region; a long inner document may extend beyond the iframe viewport.

Is CDP screenshot clipping portable across Selenium browsers?
No. The cited clip support is in Chromium’s CDP and is browser- and version-specific, rather than a portable WebDriver command.
