For a one-time capture, use your browser’s developer tools: inspect the element and run the node-screenshot command. For repeatable captures, Playwright’s locator screenshot clips the browser-rendered page to the element. Choose html2canvas only when the page itself must generate an image, because it reconstructs the DOM rather than capturing the browser’s pixels.
Choose the right way to capture an element
| Need | Use | Why |
|---|---|---|
| One-time capture without code | Chrome or Firefox DevTools | Fast and based on the browser’s rendered view. |
| Repeatable script, test, or documentation build | Playwright locator screenshot | Targets an element by selector and can run in a repeatable workflow. |
| Browser session controlled by an agent or CLI workflow | Playwright MCP screenshot | Can target an element reference or selector and offers image-format and scale controls. |
| An export button inside a web app | html2canvas | Runs in the page, but reconstructs the DOM and has rendering and browser-security limits. |
DevTools and Playwright capture the browser-rendered result. html2canvas builds an image representation from DOM properties, so complex CSS, cross-origin images, and embedded frames need special attention.
Capture an element in Chrome DevTools
- Open the page in Chrome and open DevTools. Select the Elements panel.
- Find and select the target node in the DOM tree. Chrome’s DOM tree can be searched using text, a CSS selector, or XPath; use the search to locate the node if the page has a large document tree. Chrome DevTools DOM documentation
- Open the DevTools command menu and run the node screenshot command. Its exact wording can vary between Chrome versions.
- Save the generated PNG and inspect it at its actual size. Check whether overflow, sticky elements, and animations appear as intended.
This is a good choice for a bug report, design review, or one-off documentation image. It requires no library or script. Take care to select the element itself rather than a parent node: selecting an ancestor can include extra layout and neighboring content.
Capture a node in Firefox Developer Tools
- Open Firefox Developer Tools and select the Inspector.
- Select the target element in the Inspector’s HTML pane.
- Open the element’s context menu and choose Screenshot Node.
- Find the image in the browser’s Downloads directory.
Mozilla documents this as the single-element workflow: select the element in the Inspector’s HTML pane, open its context menu, and choose “Screenshot Node.” The screenshot is saved to Downloads. Firefox Source Docs: Select an element

Automate element screenshots with Playwright
A locator screenshot is usually the maintainable option for repeated captures. It targets an element by CSS selector and saves the result as an image:
const { chromium } = require('playwright');
(async () => {
const browser = await chromium.launch();
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.goto('https://example.com');
await page.locator('.header').screenshot({ path: 'header.png' });
await browser.close();
})();
Install Playwright in your project before running the script. Save it as a JavaScript file, then run it with Node.js. Replace https://example.com with the page you need and .header with a selector that uniquely identifies the target. Playwright’s examples use the locator screenshot method. What the locator screenshot does
The screenshot is clipped to the target element’s size and position. Playwright scrolls the element into view and waits for actionability checks; if the element has been detached from the DOM, the screenshot call throws. These behaviors are documented for the element screenshot API. Playwright ElementHandle screenshot API

For a whole-page capture, use the page screenshot API instead:
await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png', fullPage: true });
That captures the full page, not just one element. Playwright’s Page API supports browser launches such as Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit, which can be useful when the same capture workflow needs cross-browser checks. Playwright Page API
Make repeated captures more stable
- Use a selector that uniquely identifies the intended element. A selector matching multiple items can target the wrong one or make the workflow ambiguous.
- Wait for the page’s content to reach the state you intend to document before capturing. A screenshot taken during a transition or while data is loading may be valid but not useful.
- Keep the target mounted until the screenshot completes. A framework update that removes or replaces the node can cause the detached-element error.
- Use the locator method for the element; use
page.screenshotonly when you intend to capture the page.
Use Playwright MCP or CLI for an agent-controlled browser
Playwright MCP’s browser_take_screenshot can target an element reference or selector. It supports PNG, JPEG, and WebP output. Its scale setting accepts "css" for CSS-pixel dimensions or "device" for a device-pixel image at higher resolution. Playwright MCP

This route fits a workflow that already has an agent-controlled browser session and a browser snapshot or element reference. Capture only after the page has reached the visual state you want; a correct selector cannot compensate for a page still showing a loading state or an unfinished animation.
Use html2canvas when the page needs to create the image
html2canvas is useful when you are implementing an in-page export feature, such as a button that lets a user download an image of part of the current app. Its documentation emphasizes that it does not take a literal screenshot: it builds a representation from properties it reads from the DOM. html2canvas documentation

A minimal pattern is to select a node, pass it to html2canvas, and turn the resulting canvas into a downloadable PNG:

import html2canvas from 'html2canvas';
const element = document.querySelector('.header');
if (!element) {
throw new Error('Could not find .header');
}
const canvas = await html2canvas(element);
const link = document.createElement('a');
link.download = 'header.png';
link.href = canvas.toDataURL('image/png');
link.click();
Use this in an environment where the html2canvas package is installed and the code runs in the page. A successful canvas does not guarantee pixel-for-pixel fidelity to the browser’s rendering.
Know the fidelity and security limits
- Unsupported CSS properties may be rendered incorrectly.
- Images generally need to be same-origin unless a proxy is used.
- A tainted canvas cannot be read to produce the expected image data.
- Plugins such as Flash or Java applets are not rendered.
- Cross-origin iframes cannot be accessed because of browser security restrictions.
These are material differences from a browser screenshot: html2canvas is reconstructing an image from accessible DOM information, not capturing everything the browser painted. For content in a cross-origin frame or a page whose exact visual rendering matters, use DevTools or browser automation instead.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. A single request captures a URL as PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF; it captures a page rather than a browser DOM node selected by a CSS locator. Its clean-shot options accept consent banners like a visitor and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be disabled. Responses identify page verdict and billing status in headers: bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed. The MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. Plans include 1,000 free shots a month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. See ScreenshotNeo and the API documentation.

Troubleshoot a missing, wrong, or unusable capture
The captured area includes too much content
In DevTools, confirm you selected the node itself rather than an ancestor. In Playwright, check that the locator matches the intended element and use the locator screenshot call rather than a full-page screenshot.
The element is missing from a Playwright screenshot
Confirm the selector still matches the page after navigation and that the target is present when the capture runs. If the element is dynamically replaced or removed, the screenshot can fail because the target was detached; wait until the page reaches the intended state and capture the current node.
The image shows a loading state or an animation frame
Move the capture later in the workflow: wait for the expected content or visual state before taking the screenshot. For manual DevTools captures, wait for the page to settle and check animation and sticky-position behavior in the saved image.
html2canvas omits an image or renders CSS differently
Check whether the resource is cross-origin, whether the canvas has been tainted, and whether the CSS feature is supported by html2canvas. A cross-origin iframe cannot be read through page JavaScript. If the output must match the actual browser rendering, switch to DevTools or Playwright.
The captured item is in a cross-origin iframe
Page scripts cannot access a cross-origin iframe because of browser security restrictions, and html2canvas cannot render its contents. Use a browser-rendered capture route where appropriate, or capture content available to the browser session rather than trying to read the frame through page JavaScript.
The image is the wrong resolution or format in an MCP workflow
Choose the desired supported format—PNG, JPEG, or WebP—and set scale to "css" for CSS-pixel sizing or "device" for device-pixel output. This setting controls resolution behavior; it does not change which element is targeted.
