You can also click the camera icon on the right side of the toolbar. Drag over the area you need, select Capture, then edit, copy, or save the result as a PNG.
This guide covers selected-area captures, the visible screen, long webpages, editing, shortcuts that do not respond, and an API option when you need repeatable screenshots instead of a manual browser capture.
Take a selected-area screenshot in Opera
Opera’s built-in Snapshot feature handles the normal screenshot workflow; you do not need an extension for a basic capture. The instructions below apply to desktop Opera and Opera GX, not Opera’s mobile browsers. Opera documents Snapshot in its Features — Snapshot help page and on its Snapshot product page.
- Open the page. Navigate to the webpage you want to capture in desktop Opera.
- Open Snapshot. Press Ctrl+Shift+5 on Windows or Linux. On macOS, press Command+Shift+2. If the shortcut is intercepted by your operating system or another application, click the camera icon on the right side of Opera’s toolbar instead.
- Draw the selection. Drag the frame around the part of the page you want. You can select a paragraph, image, panel, or any other visible region.
- Capture it. Click Capture. Opera opens the image in its Snapshot editor.
- Choose an output. Select Copy and Close to put the image on the clipboard, or choose Save Image to write a PNG file to a location you select.
Copy and Close is convenient when the screenshot is going straight into an email, document, issue tracker, or chat. Use Save Image when you need a file to upload later or want to keep the original PNG.

#1 Best Overall
Capture the visible screen or an entire webpage
Visible screen
If you need exactly what is currently visible in the browser window, use Snapshot’s Capture Full Screen option. This captures the current screen area rather than scrolling through the page. The wording and location of this option can vary slightly between Opera versions; use the option shown in your Snapshot panel.
Full webpage from top to bottom
A long webpage is a different job from a visible-screen screenshot. Opera’s documented route for preserving a page from top to bottom is Save page as PDF. Opera’s FAQ also lists a Capture full page option. Because the reviewed help pages do not establish that every current Opera build exposes identical labels, look for whichever of those options your version displays. The FAQ is available at Opera Help FAQ.
Use a PDF when the goal is a complete, scrollable record or a printable document. Use Snapshot’s image output when you need a PNG of a particular region or the current screen. A full-page PDF is not the same thing as a single, very tall PNG, and the ordinary selection workflow will not automatically include content below the viewport.

Edit the screenshot in Snapshot
After you choose Capture, Opera opens an editor. The documented tools include:
Recommended Free Tools
- Zoom to inspect or work on a detail.
- Arrows and pencil drawing to point out an area.
- Highlighting and text for annotations.
- Blur to obscure information before sharing.
- Selfie camera for adding a camera image.
- Emojis or stickers for visual callouts.
Blur is useful for account names, email addresses, order numbers, or other sensitive data. Treat it as an editing step, not a security guarantee: inspect the saved image at full size before distributing it and make sure the original, unblurred capture is not also being shared.
When the image is ready, choose Copy and Close for the clipboard or Save Image for a PNG file. Opera’s product description of Snapshot is at opera.com/features/snapshot.

Which capture method should you use?
| What you need | Opera option | Result |
|---|---|---|
| A fragment of the page | Drag a selection, then Capture | Editable image; copy it or save a PNG |
| Everything visible now | Capture Full Screen | Image of the current screen area |
| The whole page, including content below the fold | Save page as PDF, or Capture full page when your build provides it | Full-page document or image, depending on the option available |
| A screenshot to paste immediately | Copy and Close | Image on the system clipboard |
| A reusable file | Save Image | PNG saved where you choose |
Troubleshoot Snapshot when it does not work
The keyboard shortcut does nothing
- Confirm the platform shortcut: Ctrl+Shift+5 for Windows/Linux and Command+Shift+2 for macOS.
- Try the camera icon on the right side of Opera’s toolbar. Opera documents it as the alternate way to launch Snapshot.
- Another application, desktop utility, or a custom keyboard mapping may be consuming the shortcut. The toolbar route avoids that conflict.
The selection is the wrong size
Open Snapshot again and redraw the frame around the exact region. For a complete visible window, use Capture Full Screen instead of trying to stretch a manual selection beyond what is shown.
The page is longer than the image
A selected-area capture only covers the region you draw, and a visible-screen capture only covers what is on screen. For top-to-bottom preservation, use Opera’s Save page as PDF workflow or the Capture full page option if your version exposes it.

Choose Save Image and verify that the PNG opens from the location you selected. If the file is correct, the capture succeeded and the problem is limited to the clipboard destination or the application where you attempted to paste.
Private information remains visible
Return to the editor and apply blur, highlight, or another annotation. Then open the saved PNG and check every corner, including browser notifications and account details, before sharing.
Desktop and mobile scope
The official instructions reviewed for Snapshot cover desktop Opera and Opera GX. They do not establish equivalent steps for Opera’s mobile browsers, so do not assume that the desktop shortcuts work on a phone or tablet. Opera’s GX-specific Snapshot information is available at Opera GX Snapshot. For mobile, use the screenshot controls supplied by your operating system or consult the instructions for the specific Opera mobile edition you have installed.

Snapshot is ideal for an occasional, human-selected image. Automated jobs are more suitable when you need the same URL captured repeatedly, many URLs processed in a batch, a consistent viewport, or a screenshot generated by a build or monitoring system.

Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. It accepts a URL and returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Before capture, it accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be switched off. Bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers.
For a one-off request, use cURL (replace the example URL with the page you need):
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
The same request in Python:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
And in Node.js:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
See the complete parameter reference and response behavior in the ScreenshotNeo documentation. Options include full-page capture with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element capture, dark mode, 12 device presets plus custom viewports, retina scale, PDF paper size and margins, page ranges, custom CSS and JavaScript, clicks before capture, selector waits, delays, network-idle waits, ad/tracker/request blocking, custom headers and cookies, user agents and Authorization, timezone and geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, cache TTLs, signed links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture for up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API, and an OpenAPI specification. Its parameter names are compatible with those used by many other screenshot APIs, which can reduce migration work.
ScreenshotNeo also provides an MCP server with take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. Every feature is available on every plan. The Free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Yearly billing provides two months free. Sign up for the free ScreenshotNeo plan to try automated captures without entering a card.

Practical reliability and cost considerations
- Use Snapshot for interactive selection. It gives you immediate visual control and clipboard output.
- Use PDF for a long-page record. It preserves the document from top to bottom without requiring a very tall image.
- Use an API for repeatability. Fixed viewport, wait, cookie, and blocking settings make scheduled captures more consistent than a person repeating browser steps.
- Check the result, not just the request. For Snapshot, open the PNG or pasted image. For ScreenshotNeo, inspect the response headers that indicate whether a page was cleanly captured or not billed.
- Mind dynamic pages. Content that appears after scrolling, user interaction, or network requests may require a full-page option, a wait condition, a click, or custom JavaScript in an automated workflow.
Quick checklist
- Are you using desktop Opera rather than a mobile browser?
- Did you use the correct shortcut for your operating system?
- Would the toolbar camera icon avoid a shortcut conflict?
- Do you need a selected region, the visible screen, or the whole page?
- Should the output be copied to the clipboard, saved as PNG, or preserved as PDF?
- Have you blurred and rechecked sensitive information?
