On Kali Linux’s documented Xfce desktop, press Print Screen, then press Enter when screenshooter opens. You can also open the panel’s Screen-Recorder icon and choose Screenshot. These controls are documented for Xfce, not every desktop environment Kali can run, so GNOME, custom keyboard layouts and remapped shortcuts may behave differently.
Take a screenshot in Kali Xfce
Kali’s Xfce FAQ, updated June 16, 2025, gives this two-key workflow:
- Press the Print Screen key on your keyboard.
- Wait for screenshooter to launch.
- Press Enter to take the screenshot.
The FAQ’s instruction is: “Press the Print Screen key on your keyboard will launch screenshooter. Pressing enter will take the screenshot.” The wording describes the action; the exact save location and any additional options depend on the screenshooter dialog and your local configuration.

If the keyboard shortcut does nothing, use the graphical control in Xfce:

- Find the quick-launch panel beside the application menu.
- At the far right, click the Screen-Recorder icon.
- Choose Screenshot, rather than the recording command.
This menu provides the same still-image capture route without relying on the Print Screen key or its keyboard mapping.

Kali’s Xfce documentation assigns different controls to still images and video:

Do not use Ctrl + Print Screen when you want a single image; Kali documents that combination for starting the recorder.
What changes on GNOME or another Kali desktop?
Kali publishes packages for multiple desktop environments, including Xfce and GNOME, as described in its desktop metapackages documentation. The shortcut above comes specifically from the Xfce FAQ. GNOME or another installed desktop may use a different screenshot utility, notification, key binding or panel layout.

If those controls are absent, use that desktop’s own screenshot application or keyboard-shortcut settings rather than assuming the Xfce key binding is universal.
A customized keyboard mapping can also change the result. A laptop may label the key PrtSc, PrtScn or place it behind an Fn layer. Check the keyboard’s printed legends and try the panel method if the key is unavailable.

When Print Screen does not work
The key has a different label
Search the top row and navigation cluster for Print Screen, PrtSc or PrtScn. On some laptops, hold Fn while pressing the key. If the keyboard has no such key, use the panel’s Screen-Recorder icon and choose Screenshot.
Nothing opens after the key press
- Try the panel route; it avoids a broken or remapped key binding.
- Confirm that the session is Xfce before applying an Xfce-specific fix.
- Check your desktop’s keyboard-shortcut settings for a custom mapping.
- Make sure a modifier is not being held accidentally; Ctrl + Print Screen is the recording shortcut in the documented Xfce setup.
Screenshooter opens but Enter has no visible effect
Give the dialog focus by clicking it, then press Enter again. If a different button is selected, use the dialog’s visible controls to choose the screenshot action. The official instruction establishes the shortcut sequence, but it does not specify a universal save directory or every screenshooter version’s dialog layout.

You captured a video instead of an image
You probably selected the recorder or pressed Ctrl + Print Screen. Stop the recording, reopen the panel icon and select Screenshot, or press Print Screen without Ctrl.
The panel icon is missing
Panel contents can be customized. Look for an application-menu entry for the screenshot utility, restore the panel item through your desktop’s panel settings, or use the Print Screen shortcut. If you are not running Xfce, consult the controls for the desktop you installed.

The response is not an image
Check the HTTP status and save the response only after a successful request. In Python, raise_for_status() exposes authentication or request errors. In Node.js, inspect res.ok before writing bytes. Verify the access key, URL encoding and endpoint spelling.
The page is blank or blocked
Inspect X-Page-Verdict. A bot check, blank page, timeout or failed load is reported rather than silently treated as a clean capture, and these outcomes are not billed. Adjust waits, headers, cookies or user-agent settings when the target requires them.
The page is incomplete
Use full-page capture with lazy-image loading, wait for a selector or network idle, or add a deliberate delay. For dynamic interfaces, custom JavaScript or a click action can put the page in the required state before capture.
Too many repeated requests
Choose a cache TTL for stable pages and monitor usage through the usage API. Cache hits are identified in the response and are not billed.
