The correct Blender command depends on what you need to show. To capture the entire Blender interface, choose Window > Save Screenshot. To capture one panel, choose Window > Save Screenshot (Editor), then click the target editor. If you need an image of the 3D scene rather than the interface, use Viewport Render or a normal still render instead.
Choose the right kind of Blender image
“Screenshot” can mean two different outputs:
- Interface screenshot: a picture of Blender’s window, including menus, timelines, tool settings, and editor layout.
- Scene image: a picture produced from the 3D Viewport or render system, without the surrounding Blender interface.
Use the Window menu commands for documentation, tutorials, bug reports, or showing your workspace. Use Viewport Render when you want a quick image from the current 3D view. Use a regular render when you need the scene output configured through Blender’s render and output settings.
Capture the entire Blender window
- Arrange the Blender window, editors, panels, and overlays exactly as you want them to appear.
- Open Window in Blender’s top bar.
- Choose Save Screenshot.
- In the File Browser, select the destination and filename, then confirm the save.
The Blender Manual describes this command as capturing “a picture of the current Blender window.” It records the visible Blender application window, so resize or rearrange the window first if the layout matters. Any open menus, gizmos, overlays, or temporary panels that are visible at capture time can appear in the result.
Preparing a useful window screenshot
- Maximize Blender or set a deliberate window size before opening the command.
- Close popovers and menus that are not part of the explanation.
- Set the desired workspace tab and editor arrangement.
- Frame the important object in the 3D Viewport and hide distracting overlays when appropriate.
- Check that no private file paths, usernames, or other sensitive data are visible.
Capture one Blender editor
Blender calls each major area of its interface an editor: for example, the 3D Viewport, Outliner, Properties, Image Editor, or Timeline. To save only one of them:
#1 Best Overall
- More than 140+ intuitive keyboard shortcuts
- Backlit keys, adjustable in 5 levels
- Built-in USB 3.0 Super-Speed hub
- USB wired
- Plug-and-play with macOS
- Open Window > Save Screenshot (Editor).
- Click inside the editor area you want to capture.
- Use the File Browser to choose the destination and save the image.
Selecting the area is essential. If you click in the wrong editor, Blender captures that editor instead. When areas are tightly arranged, click in an unmistakable part of the target, such as the center of the 3D Viewport or the Outliner’s item list.
When an editor screenshot is better
- A tutorial needs to show only a node graph or shader setup.
- A bug report concerns one panel and the rest of the interface is irrelevant.
- You want a readable Outliner or Properties panel without shrinking it inside a full-window image.
- You need to document a viewport state while avoiding unrelated personal workspace details.
Save a picture of the 3D scene instead
A window screenshot shows Blender around the scene. For a clean image from the active 3D view, use Viewport Render. It creates a preview render from the current viewpoint. If the view is not the active camera view, Blender uses a virtual camera matching that perspective.
- Set the 3D Viewport to the angle you want.
- Open the viewport’s render command and choose Viewport Render.
- Review the resulting image in Blender’s Image Editor.
- Save the image from the Image Editor when it looks correct.
Viewport Render is useful for a quick preview, but it is not the same operation as capturing the Blender window. The resulting image contains the scene view rather than menus, panels, and other interface elements.
Viewport preview versus a normal still render
A normal still render follows the scene’s render and output configuration. Blender’s Output documentation notes that still renders are not automatically saved by default. After rendering, save the image manually from the Image Editor, using Image > Save or Image > Save As, or route the result through a File Output Node in a node-based workflow.
| Goal | Use | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Show the complete Blender interface | Window > Save Screenshot | The current Blender window |
| Show one panel or editor | Window > Save Screenshot (Editor) | The selected editor area |
| Show the scene from the current view | Viewport Render | A preview image from the active viewpoint |
| Produce the configured final still | Render, then save from Image Editor or use a File Output Node | A rendered scene image saved through your output workflow |
File Browser and format considerations
The Window screenshot commands open Blender’s File Browser so you can select where the image goes. Choose a location you can find later, use a descriptive filename, and verify the extension and format offered by your Blender version. If another application expects a particular format, confirm it after saving rather than assuming that a viewport screenshot and a render use identical settings.

Version and operating-system notes
The checked Blender documentation covers the 5.1 manual, with related material for 5.2 and 5.3 development. Menu labels and available options can change between releases. If your installation does not show the exact wording, open the Window menu and look for an item containing “Screenshot.”
Do not rely on one supposedly universal keyboard shortcut for Windows, macOS, and Linux. The documented, cross-version-safe procedure is the menu path. Operating-system screenshot shortcuts may capture a different window, the whole desktop, or a system-level selection rather than Blender’s own screenshot output.
Troubleshooting
The saved image contains the wrong panel
You probably clicked a different editor after launching Save Screenshot (Editor). Run the command again and click clearly inside the intended area before using the File Browser.
The result includes menus or overlays I did not want
Use an editor screenshot or a Viewport Render instead of a whole-window screenshot. Before capturing, close menus, popovers, and temporary panels, and toggle viewport overlays as needed.

I expected a clean render but got the Blender interface
Save Screenshot is intentionally an interface capture. Use Viewport Render for a scene image from the current view, or perform a normal render and save it from the Image Editor.
My render exists on screen but not as a file
Still renders are not saved automatically by default. In the Image Editor choose Image > Save or Image > Save As, or configure a File Output Node for an automated output path.

Blender releases can change labels and options. Search the Window menu for “Screenshot” and use the command that matches whether you need the complete window or one editor.
Clipboard image pasting does not work
Clipboard behavior is platform-specific. The development documentation states that direct clipboard copying and pasting supports PNG; Windows can also paste images by copying a file path, while Linux clipboard image support requires Wayland. This is separate from saving a screenshot through Blender’s Window menu. Saving to a file is the dependable fallback.

- Need menus, panels, and the full workspace? Choose Window > Save Screenshot.
- Need only one Blender area? Choose Save Screenshot (Editor) and click that area.
- Need the scene without Blender chrome? Use Viewport Render or a normal render.
- Need a saved render file? Save it from the Image Editor or configure a File Output Node.
- Unsure which command your version has? Search the Window menu for “Screenshot.”
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Save Screenshot capture the entire desktop?
No. Blender’s command captures the current Blender window. A system-level desktop capture is a separate operating-system function.
Can I use an editor screenshot for the Image Editor?
Yes. Launch Window > Save Screenshot (Editor), click inside the Image Editor, and then choose the destination in Blender’s File Browser.
Why is my Viewport Render different from the camera render?
Viewport Render uses the current 3D view; when you are not in camera view, Blender uses a virtual camera matching that perspective. A normal render follows the scene’s configured render workflow.
