To screenshot one webpage element in Chrome, right-click it, choose Inspect, then right-click the matching node in DevTools’ Elements panel and choose Capture node screenshot. Chrome saves the image in your Downloads folder. Firefox uses Screenshot Node in the Inspector. For content below the fold, use Firefox’s full-page screenshot controls or :screenshot --fullpage instead.
What “screenshot from Inspect Element” can mean
Inspect Element opens the browser’s developer tools and lets you identify the exact DOM node that produced a visible component. A node screenshot captures that selected element, not automatically the entire website. A full-page screenshot is a different operation that includes content outside the current viewport.
Before capturing, confirm that the page has finished rendering, the desired images or text are visible, and the highlighted node is the correct one. The saved image reflects the browser’s rendered state at that moment; it is not a fresh server-side copy of the page.
Chrome: capture one element from Inspect
Step 1: select the element
- Open the webpage in Chrome.
- Right-click the visual element you want, such as a card, image, table, or banner.
- Choose Inspect. DevTools opens and highlights the corresponding node in the Elements panel.
Step 2: verify the DOM node
Look at the highlighted line in the DOM tree. If the selection is too broad or too narrow, move to a parent or child node. For example, selecting a wrapper may include a heading, image, and button, while selecting the image node captures only the image. You can also use DevTools’ page-inspection picker and then navigate the tree manually when overlapping elements make the initial selection inaccurate.

Step 3: save the node screenshot
- Right-click the correct node in the DOM tree, not merely the page itself.
- Choose Capture node screenshot.
- Check your Downloads folder for the image file.
Chrome’s documented workflow is specifically for an individual DOM node. If you need everything below the visible window, do not assume that a node capture is a full-page capture; use a full-page method or a dedicated capture service instead.
Firefox: capture an element or the whole page
Capture a single element
- Open the page and right-click the target element.
- Choose Inspect Element to open the Inspector, or open Web Developer Tools and select the Inspector.
- In the Inspector’s HTML pane, right-click the target node.
- Choose Screenshot Node.
- Open Downloads to find the saved screenshot.
As in Chrome, selecting the right node determines the crop. If the result contains too much or too little, return to the HTML pane and choose a different parent or child node.
Capture the entire page with the toolbar
- Open Developer Tools Settings.
- Under Available Toolbox Buttons, enable Take a screenshot of the entire page.
- Close settings if necessary and click the screenshot icon in the Developer Tools toolbar.
- Firefox saves the full-page image to Downloads.
Use Firefox’s Web Console command
Firefox’s Web Console includes a :screenshot helper. Use :screenshot --fullpage when you want the page’s content beyond the current viewport. The helper also supports options for situations where timing, output location, or resolution matters:
--delaywaits before capture, which helps when a menu, animation, or hover state needs time to appear.--dprsets the device-pixel ratio.--filenamechooses a filename; use a name ending in.png.--clipboardcopies the result to the clipboard.--filewrites the result to a file.--selectorcaptures a selected element and its descendants.
For example, a delayed full-page capture can be written as :screenshot --fullpage --delay 2 --filename page.png. Use the current Firefox command help if your installed version presents different option labels.

Microsoft Edge’s Inspect tool can select elements and its Elements panel can inspect or edit HTML and CSS, but the consulted overview does not document a screenshot command. Menu names and capabilities can also vary by browser release, so use the labels shown in your installed version rather than assuming Chrome and Edge are identical.

Make the captured result accurate
Wait for dynamic content
Single-page applications, lazy-loaded images, fonts, and client-side data can appear after the initial page load. Wait until the exact content is visible before selecting the node. In Firefox, --delay provides a documented way to pause before a console capture. In either browser, scroll or interact with the page first if that action is what triggers the content you need.
Check the selected node’s boundaries
DevTools highlights the node box. Use that highlight to spot accidental selections such as an invisible wrapper, an outer layout container, or a child image when you wanted the complete card. A screenshot cannot recover content that is outside the selected node’s rendered bounds.
Account for the current visual state
Cookie dialogs, chat widgets, newsletter prompts, open menus, and hover styles are part of the rendered state. Close or accept overlays when they obstruct the target. Conversely, deliberately leave a menu open if that state is what you need to document, and use Firefox’s delay option when the state takes time to settle.

Check scale and readability
The browser’s viewport and device-pixel ratio affect the number of pixels in the result. Firefox’s --dpr option lets console users request a different device-pixel ratio. For a node screenshot, make sure text is legible at the output size before distributing the file; enlarging a low-resolution capture later will not recreate missing detail.
Troubleshooting
“Capture node screenshot” or “Screenshot Node” is missing
- Confirm that you right-clicked a node inside the Elements or Inspector HTML tree, not the page content.
- Click the node first so DevTools has an active selection.
- Switch to the browser’s current DevTools layout and look for the exact menu label; labels can change between releases.
The image contains the wrong part of the page
Return to the DOM tree and compare the highlighted boundary with the intended crop. Select a parent to include surrounding content or a child to remove unrelated content. Inspecting the visual element again is often faster than trying to edit the resulting image.

The screenshot is blank or incomplete
Wait for network activity and lazy content to finish, then capture again. If an image appears only after scrolling, scroll it into view before selecting the node. A failed network request, blocked script, or page that has not finished rendering cannot be repaired by the screenshot command.
The page extends below the viewport but the result does not
You captured a node or the visible viewport rather than the whole document. In Firefox, enable Take a screenshot of the entire page or run :screenshot --fullpage. For Chrome, the documented workflow here is node-specific, so use a full-page-capable method when below-the-fold content is required.
Overlays or consent notices cover the target
Dismiss the overlay before inspecting, or choose the underlying node in the DOM tree if it is still present. Some overlays are inserted as separate nodes and can be selected accidentally; verify the highlighted box before saving.
The downloaded file is difficult to locate
Both documented Chrome and Firefox workflows save to Downloads by default. Check the browser’s download history if the folder has been redirected, or use Firefox’s --filename and --file options for a named destination.
When browser DevTools is not the best fit
DevTools is ideal for an occasional, manual capture while you are looking at the page. It becomes cumbersome when you need repeatable URLs, a clean result without consent banners, responsive device sizes, PDFs, scheduled jobs, or an automated pipeline. A browser session also requires you to manage rendering timing, cookies, popups, and failures yourself.
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. Send one GET request with a URL to receive a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Before capture, it accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be disabled. Only clean shots are billed: bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and the response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe API supports full-page captures with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element captures, dark mode, 12 device presets or a custom viewport, retina scale, PDF paper size and margins, custom CSS and JavaScript, pre-capture clicks, waits for selectors, delays or network idle, request and resource blocking, custom headers, cookies, user agents and Authorization, timezone and geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, configurable-TTL caching, signed links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API, and an OpenAPI specification. Parameter names used by other screenshot APIs also work, which can simplify migration.

FAQ
Can I screenshot hidden HTML that is not rendered?
These workflows capture the browser’s rendered state. If a node is hidden or its content has not loaded, make it render visibly first, then capture it.
Does a node screenshot include the node’s children?
The selected node’s rendered box is the capture target; in Firefox, --selector explicitly captures a selected element and its descendants. Choose the node level that matches the crop you need.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I screenshot a page element without editing its HTML?
Yes. Inspecting only selects the DOM node; you do not need to modify the HTML or CSS before using the node screenshot command.
Is a full-page screenshot the same as an element screenshot?
No. An element screenshot is limited to the selected node, while a full-page capture includes content outside the current viewport.
Which browser has the documented console screenshot controls here?
Firefox documents the Web Console :screenshot helper and options such as –fullpage, –delay, –dpr, –filename, –clipboard, –file, and –selector.
