Fastest method: install a YouTube screenshot extension, pause the video on the exact frame, then click its camera button. Chrome extensions can save a clean video frame without controls; Firefox users can use either a dedicated YouTube add-on or Firefox’s built-in Screenshot tool. The right choice depends on your browser, whether you need the video only or a page region, and whether you want a download, clipboard copy, subtitles, cropping, or support for other sites.
Take a clean YouTube frame in Chrome
- Install an extension. Open the official Screenshot YouTube listing or Video Screenshot listing in the Chrome Web Store and select Add to Chrome. Review the requested permissions before confirming.
- Open the video. Use a normal YouTube watch page rather than an embedded player when possible. Pause at the frame you need. Drag the timeline slowly, or use the keyboard’s frame-by-frame controls where available, to refine the position.
- Capture the frame. Select the camera or Screenshot button added to the player. Screenshot YouTube documents one-click capture, saving to a file, copying to the clipboard, optional keyboard shortcuts, and playback-rate controls. Video Screenshot says its camera button captures the current frame without player controls or watermarks and can save JPG or PNG or copy the image.
- Check the result. Open the downloaded file or paste from the clipboard into an editor. If you need another frame, leave the video paused, move one frame, and capture again.
Video Screenshot’s Chrome listing describes the extension as Chrome-only. Screenshot YouTube’s listing showed 500,000 users, a 4.4-star rating from 486 ratings, and version 3.0.0 updated December 27, 2024, when accessed September 29, 2026. Video Screenshot showed 100,000 users, a 4.2-star rating from 784 ratings, and version 7.0.7 updated August 23, 2026, on the same access date. Store counts and ratings can change.

Choose Screenshot YouTube for a narrow, one-click YouTube workflow. Choose Video Screenshot if subtitles, cropping, or non-YouTube coverage matter and you accept its stated data-handling disclosure. Neither listing guarantees that every future YouTube player change will remain compatible.
Firefox options
Firefox’s built-in Screenshot tool
- Pause the YouTube video at the desired frame.
- Right-click an empty area of the page and choose Take Screenshot, or press Ctrl+Shift+S on Windows/Linux or Command+Shift+S on macOS.
- Select the rectangle around the video, then choose Download or Copy. Firefox documents region, visible-area, and full-page modes.
This approach needs no YouTube-specific add-on, but the selection must be aligned carefully. It captures the selected page region, so controls, captions, or surrounding page pixels can enter the image.

Youtube Video Screenshot Tool add-on
- Install Youtube Video Screenshot Tool from Mozilla Add-ons.
- Open a YouTube video and pause it.
- Open the video’s settings menu and select the added screenshot button. The result opens in a new window.
Mozilla’s listing says the add-on captures the video at its selected resolution, excludes captions and the player bar, and requires access to youtube.com. Set YouTube’s quality before capturing if resolution matters. The listing warns that some ad blockers may close the new result window. It showed 423 users and version 1.5.0, last updated February 28, 2025, when accessed September 29, 2026.
How to get the exact frame and best quality
Pause precisely
Use the timeline thumbnail to approach the scene, then move in very small increments. A screenshot cannot restore detail that was not present in the decoded video frame, so pause before motion blur or a transition.
Set playback quality first
For the Firefox add-on, the capture follows the video’s selected resolution. Open YouTube’s gear menu, choose Quality, select the highest available setting, wait for it to load, and then capture. Chrome extensions generally capture the displayed player frame, so enlarging the player or entering full screen can affect dimensions.
Keep controls and captions out
Use Video Screenshot’s stated clean-frame capture or the Firefox add-on when you need video-only output. With Firefox Screenshots, select only the picture area and wait for controls to fade. Turn captions off if they are not part of the evidence you need.

Understand scaling
A high-resolution source can still produce a smaller image when the browser displays a small player. For a presentation or print workflow, capture after enlarging the player, then inspect the resulting pixel dimensions before upscaling.
Privacy, permissions, and reliability
- Check each extension’s permissions and privacy policy before installation. Screenshot YouTube’s Chrome listing discloses no data collection and describes the extension as free of ads and tracking code.
- Video Screenshot’s listing discloses handling personally identifiable and authentication information. That disclosure is not a claim that your data will be misused, but it is a reason to review the linked policy and limit installation to a browser profile you trust.
- Firefox’s Screenshot documentation says interaction events such as Copy or Save full page may be collected, while URLs and image details are not collected; Firefox lets users disable technical and interaction data collection.
- Browser extensions depend on the structure of the sites they modify. Video Screenshot says operation depends on changes to other websites and requires continuous maintenance, so a YouTube update can temporarily remove or relocate its button.
Troubleshooting
No Screenshot or camera button
Reload the YouTube tab, confirm the extension is enabled for youtube.com, and open a regular watch page instead of an embedded player. If the button disappeared after a YouTube interface change, check the extension’s store listing for an update.
The output is blank or a new window never appears
Allow pop-ups for the site and try again. The Firefox add-on specifically warns that some ad blockers may close its output window; temporarily adjust the blocker for the test, then restore your preferred protection.
Controls or captions are visible
Use Video Screenshot’s clean-frame mode, the Firefox YouTube add-on, or make a tighter selection with Firefox Screenshots. Wait for the player overlay to fade before capturing.

The image is the wrong resolution
Set YouTube to the required quality before using the Firefox add-on. For a browser extension, enlarge the player and verify the saved file’s dimensions; the displayed player, not the original upload, determines what is captured.
The extension stopped working
Check that it is enabled, update it from the browser’s extensions page, reload YouTube, and test without an embedded player. If the failure follows a YouTube redesign, the extension author must update the integration.
When a browser extension is not the right tool
Extensions are convenient for a person capturing a few frames. They are less suitable for scheduled captures, bulk URLs, server-side rendering, reproducible device sizes, or an automated pipeline. For those jobs, use an API that returns an image or PDF from a URL.

Will these extensions work on YouTube embeds?
They may not. If the button is missing, use a normal YouTube watch page and reload the tab.
Why does my screenshot look softer than the YouTube video?
The saved image follows the displayed player or selected capture resolution. Increase YouTube quality and enlarge the player before capturing.
