For the quickest manual capture of part of a Windows screen, press Windows logo key + Shift + S, choose a snip mode, and select the area. Use Windows logo key + PrtScn when you want a full-screen image saved as a file, or Alt + PrtScn to copy only the active window to the clipboard.
The methods below apply to Windows 10 and Windows 11. They use built-in Windows features, so you do not need to install a screenshot utility.
Choose the shortcut that matches your outcome
| What you need | Shortcut or tool | Where the result goes |
|---|---|---|
| Select part of the screen | Windows logo key + Shift + S | Snipping Tool capture; copy, edit, or save it |
| Save the entire screen as an image file | Windows logo key + PrtScn | File Explorer > Pictures > Screenshots |
| Capture only the active window | Alt + PrtScn | Clipboard; paste with Ctrl + V |
| Use a keyboard without PrtScn | Fn + Windows logo key + Space Bar may work | Hardware-dependent screenshot capture |
Shortcut behavior can vary with keyboard hardware and Windows settings. Microsoft documents these combinations in its Snipping Tool, Print Screen, and Windows keyboard shortcut guidance.
Capture part of the screen with Windows + Shift + S
This is the best default when you need a region, a menu, or a single item rather than everything on the display.

- Press Windows logo key + Shift + S. Microsoft Support describes this as opening the Snipping Tool overlay for an image snapshot.
- When the overlay appears, choose a mode if it is shown: Rectangular snip, Freeform snip, Window snip, or Full-screen snip.
- For rectangular mode, drag around the content. For freeform mode, draw the outline you want. Window mode captures the window you select; full-screen mode captures the display.
- Use the notification or Snipping Tool window that appears to annotate, crop, copy, save, or share the image.
The selected image is available to the Snipping Tool for editing and is copied for convenient pasting. Depending on your Snipping Tool settings and Windows version, captures may also be saved automatically to a Screenshots folder. If you need a specific location, use Save as and choose the folder and file name yourself.
Change the capture before you take it
Open Start, search for Snipping Tool, and launch it. Select the desired mode, then choose New. This full app view is useful when you need a delay, annotations, or a deliberate save operation instead of an immediate shortcut.
When to use each snip mode
- Rectangular: best for a precise box around text, a dialog, or a control.
- Freeform: useful when the subject has an irregular shape.
- Window: captures one application window without manually tracing its edges.
- Full screen: records everything visible on the selected display.
Save a full-screen screenshot directly to a file
- Press Windows logo key + PrtScn at the same time.
- Open File Explorer > Pictures > Screenshots.
- Open, rename, move, or share the image from that folder.
This shortcut is different from a plain PrtScn press: it saves the full screen rather than leaving the image only on the clipboard. If your PC uses a function layer, you may need to hold Fn as well, depending on the keyboard design.
Copy the active window with Alt + PrtScn
- Click the application window you want so it is active.
- Press Alt + PrtScn.
- Open Paint, Word, an email, or another image-compatible application.
- Press Ctrl + V to paste the clipboard image, then save it from that application.
This captures the active window rather than the entire desktop. It does not automatically create a file, so paste it before replacing the clipboard contents.

What if your keyboard has no PrtScn key?
Some compact laptops and keyboards omit a dedicated Print Screen key or combine it with another function. Microsoft lists Fn + Windows logo key + Space Bar as a possible screenshot shortcut for devices without PrtScn, but whether it works depends on the hardware.
You can also use Windows + Shift + S or launch Snipping Tool from Start, neither of which requires a dedicated PrtScn key. On some systems, pressing PrtScn is configured to open screen snipping instead of performing a traditional clipboard capture; Windows settings and keyboard firmware determine that behavior. Microsoft’s general shortcut reference is available at Keyboard shortcuts in Windows.
Clipboard versus saved file: know which result you made
Clipboard captures
Alt + PrtScn places the active-window image on the clipboard. A region captured with Windows + Shift + S can also be copied from Snipping Tool. Paste with Ctrl + V into an app that accepts images, then save from that app.
Automatically saved captures
Windows + PrtScn saves a full-screen image in Pictures > Screenshots. Snipping Tool’s automatic-save behavior and folder can be changed in its settings, so check those settings if a capture is not where you expect.

Manual saves from Snipping Tool
After a snip, select the save command in the Snipping Tool window, choose a destination, and select an image format and file name. This is the safest option when you need a predictable path or want to preserve a particular naming scheme.
How to annotate, crop, and share
Open the capture in Snipping Tool after taking it. Use its available pen or markup controls to draw attention to an area, crop unwanted edges, copy the result, save a new file, or share it. For permanent edits beyond those controls, paste or save the image and open it in Paint or another editor.
Troubleshooting common screenshot problems
Nothing appears after Windows + Shift + S
- Make sure you press the Windows logo key, Shift, and S together.
- Look for the dimmed overlay or a notification; a very short-lived notification may be hidden behind another window.
- Open Start, search for Snipping Tool, and use New as a fallback.
The image is not in Pictures > Screenshots
That folder is the documented destination for Windows + PrtScn. If you used Alt + PrtScn or a clipboard snip, no file is created until you paste and save it. For Snipping Tool captures, review the app’s automatic-save setting and use Save as to select a known folder.
Alt + PrtScn pasted the wrong thing
Click the target window first, then repeat the shortcut. Alt + PrtScn captures whichever window is active at the moment you press it. Paste immediately so another copy operation does not replace the image on the clipboard.

PrtScn does not respond
Try the keyboard’s Fn layer, use Windows + Shift + S, or test Microsoft’s Fn + Windows + Space Bar combination for hardware that lacks PrtScn. A system may also be configured so PrtScn opens screen snipping rather than copying the screen.
A game or protected app shows a blank or blocked capture
Some applications control what can be copied or displayed outside their own window. Try the application’s own export or capture command, or capture a permitted region with Snipping Tool. Do not bypass access controls or copy content you are not authorized to share.
Practical tips for cleaner manual captures
- Close unrelated notifications and windows before selecting a region.
- For a dialog or menu, use window or rectangular snip so surrounding desktop clutter is excluded.
- Keep the original capture until you have checked text, cursor position, and edges.
- Use descriptive names and a consistent folder when screenshots are part of bug reports or documentation.
- On a multi-monitor setup, confirm which display the full-screen mode will include before saving.
Or skip the browser setup
If you need repeatable screenshots of web pages rather than a one-off desktop image, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. It accepts a URL and returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Before capture, it can accept cookie or consent banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be disabled. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response reports the page verdict and billing status in X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.
