To capture a webpage that is taller than your screen, use a full-page screenshot extension: install it from your browser’s official extension store, open the page, choose the extension’s full-page capture command, and let it scroll and assemble the image. In Chrome, GoFullPage is one documented option. Edge and Firefox also include built-in full-page screenshot tools, so you may not need an extension at all.
How a full-page screenshot extension works
A standard screenshot records only what is visible in the browser window. A full-page capture goes farther: the extension scrolls through the document, captures portions below the fold, and assembles them into a longer image. That makes it useful for preserving an article, receipt, reference page, or other content that would otherwise require multiple screenshots.
The result is not always a perfect snapshot of everything on screen. Pages may load images only as you scroll, keep navigation bars fixed, animate banners, place content inside frames, or use their own nested scroll areas. Any of these can affect what the extension captures. Long pages and restricted browser URLs can also behave differently depending on the extension and browser.
Take a full-page screenshot with an extension
- Install an extension from the browser’s official store. GoFullPage is a documented Chrome option. Awesome Screenshot documents workflows for Chrome-compatible browsers, Safari, and Firefox. Check the store listing and the permissions requested before installing.
- Open the page and prepare it. Wait for the content you want to save to load. If the page loads images or other sections as you scroll, give it time to finish loading or be ready to inspect the capture afterward.
- Open the extension. Click its toolbar icon. If the icon is not visible, pin the extension from the browser’s extensions menu.
- Choose the full-page command. Depending on the extension and browser, the label may be Full Page, Capture Full Page, or Capture Entire Page.
- Let the capture finish. The extension may scroll through the page and assemble the result. Avoid navigating away or interacting with the page until it is done.
- Inspect the image before using it. Look for missing lazy-loaded sections, duplicated or interrupted sticky headers, animation frames, and content inside nested scroll areas. Recapture after loading the missing content, or try a native browser or developer tool if the extension cannot capture the page correctly.
- Save or copy the result. Use the extension’s save or copy command. If it offers PDF export or annotation, those are separate choices you can make after the capture.

Chrome: when an extension is the right choice
Chrome’s documented pageCapture API is not an image screenshot feature. Google describes it as saving a tab to MHTML, a single file that encapsulates the page and its resources; an extension using that API must declare the pageCapture permission. If you need a PNG or another image rather than an archive, choose a screenshot extension instead.

Edge’s built-in tool is a practical first choice when you want a one-off full-page capture without adding an extension. Open it from the right-click menu or Settings, or press Ctrl+Shift+S. You can capture below the fold, mark up the result, and then copy or save it. Microsoft also documents capture of moving content such as GIFs or carousels; the appearance of moving content can depend on what is visible during the capture.

Firefox: use Save full page or DevTools
For an ordinary capture, right-click an empty part of the page, select Take Screenshot, then choose Save full page. To control technical details or repeat a capture, Firefox DevTools offers an entire-page screenshot button and the :screenshot helper’s options. Use --selector when you need a targeted element, or --delay when a page needs additional time before capture.
Choose an extension by the page you need to capture
There is no single capture method that is best for every page. Use the browser’s built-in tool when it supports the output and page you need; choose an extension when you need an extension-specific workflow or cross-browser availability. - For a normal long article: an extension or the browser’s native full-page capture is usually the simplest route.
- For content that appears only after scrolling: let it load, then inspect the final capture for gaps. A page can defer images or sections until they approach the viewport.
- For sticky navigation or moving elements: check for repeated headers or unexpected animation frames. Recapture or change methods if the result is unsuitable.
- For nested scroll areas or framed content: verify that the extension captured the content inside the area or frame, not just the surrounding page.
- For an image versus an archive: use a screenshot workflow for an image. Chrome’s
pageCaptureAPI produces MHTML, which is a different kind of saved page. - For restricted browser URLs: an extension may not be able to capture them. Try the browser’s built-in screenshot command where available.
Privacy and permissions to check
A screenshot extension needs access to the page it captures. Before installing one, review the permissions shown in the official browser store and decide whether they fit your use. Avoid capturing pages that contain private information if you do not want that content saved in an image or copied to the clipboard. If a capture includes account details, tokens, or personal data, treat the resulting file as sensitive.

The screenshot stops at the visible area
Confirm that you selected the extension’s full-page option rather than its visible-area or selected-area mode. In Firefox, choose Save full page. In Edge, open Screenshot and select the full-page capture option.

Images or sections are missing
Some pages load content only when it approaches the viewport. Wait for the page to finish loading, scroll through it if necessary, and capture again. If an element still does not appear, compare the result with a native or developer-tool capture.
The output has repeated headers or odd moving content
Sticky elements and animation frames can be captured differently as the extension scrolls. Try capturing again after the page settles, or use a different method. For repeatable Firefox captures, DevTools provides a screenshot delay option.
A frame or inner scroll area is absent
The capture may cover the main document without correctly capturing content inside an embedded frame or independently scrolling area. Check whether the extension or browser tool can target the specific content. Firefox DevTools’ --selector option can help with a selected element.

The extension cannot capture the page
Some browser pages are restricted, and extensions may not be able to access them. GoFullPage’s listing history includes fixes for restricted URLs, but that does not guarantee every URL is capturable. Try the browser’s built-in command or a different supported page.
The page is long, but the saved result is unusable
Review the final image rather than assuming a successful download means the page was captured correctly. Check for missing sections, cut-off content, repeated fixed elements, and changes in moving content. For PDFs or annotations, use the extension’s export or markup feature if available, or choose a browser tool that supports the task.
